The Mothmen – ONU Sound Records – 1981

Tardis / Mothmen

This second release on the mighty fine ONU Sound Record label was quietly snuck in between the first two New Age Steppers LP’s, New Age Steppers Vol 1 and Action Battlefield (both ONU Sound / Statik joint releases) way back in 1981.

The Mothmen originated from the breakup of two Manchester bands, The Durutti Column and the fun shock rock band Albertos Y Lost Trios Paranoias, and the band had previously issued a 7″ single before ONU Sound released this product.

I understand that Adrian Sherwood was not directly involved in any of the recording or mixing of this LP, which is probably why it sometimes sounds a little like Stonehenge festival favorites Here And Now mixed up with 23 Skidoo’s Culling Is Coming period.

Some early ONU Sound history from 1983 that I found in my box (above) which strangely does not mention The Mothmen at all, not sure why, perhaps the lack of Sherwood on this LP was the reason, as by 1983 he had gained a solid reputation with material he did work on such as Creation Rebel, Singers And Players and Mark Stewart And The Maffia.

Great record none the less from the band soon to be called Simply Red later on in the 1980’s!

….And Bob Harding went on to run Blood and Fire record label, partially funded by Mick Hucknall.
