Chron Gen – Live At Leicester – Chaos Cassette – 1981

Hounds Of The Night / Subway Sadist / Chron Gen / Rockabill / The Mindless Few / You’ll Never Change Me / Living Next Door To Alice

Puppets Of War / Reality / LSD / Lies

Recorded during the UK ‘Apocalypse Now’ tour which also included Anti Pasti, Exploited, Discharge and a band from Tunbridge Wells who are not important in any way whatsoever. Hitchin and Stevenage’s favorite sons and Bowes Lyon House regulars Chron Gen going through their mid tempo melodic punk rock, commenting on drugs, war, drugs, violence and a few more drug songs thrown in just in case you missed any earlier songs on drugs! Plus a ‘shock value’ (ooohhh) rendition of Smokey’s ‘Living Next To Alice’.

Fanzine pages taken from Rising Free number 4 1981, concern Gez Lowry (soon to become Chron Gen’s manager) tales of being on the road with the band during this tour.

I saw the Apocalypse Now tour in Glasgow but Chron gen were always one of those bands I just didn’t ‘get’. Just a bit too poppy and polished for me, i s’pose. Sorry.

Yes, same here Chris: I saw them a couple of times on the ‘Apocalypse Now’ tour and had the same thoughts – too tuneful and melodic…
(Mind you, I was only there for Discharge! 😉 )

Hey guys leave the poor penguin alone, nowt wrong with a bit of pop tunefulness, this tape rawks. I’ve heard they’re playing a gig at a place called the Ivy Leaf Club in somewhere called Langford which I think’s near Biggleswade on 26th Jan, much as I love some of their stuff don’t think I’ll bother, what about you penguin?

Nice one Nuzz, the unbelievers run away, your a rock mate…Chron Gen reforming? Sounds like a pretty rough night out. Think my memory of the band will suffice for now. If they played somewhere in North London I may well be up for it!

Well guys, just to let you know that Chron Gen will be playing on May 9th 2009 at Club 85 in Hitchin Herts to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their formation and to raise a bit of money for Cystic Fibrosis. Support will come from The Bleach Boys, Eastside Jimmy and The Shotgun Sinners. So get down and get with it!

    Cheers Gez.

Hi Gez, I used to read Rising Free quite a bit and liked Chron Gen, reckon I will be up in Hitchin on that date. Bowes Lyon was always a doss in those early to mid 80’s days.

I liked Chron Gen at the time, and they impressed me a lot more than The Exploited on Apocalypse Now (altho the other bands on the bill rocked big time). I am sure I saw them at the 100 Club supported by Black Flag. Altho Black Flag’s records left me a bit cold, live they were awesome. As Henry and the boys from LA played 2 sets, Chron Gen had a very tough act to follow that night.
