August 1, 2008 at 2:57 pmwell, then, what do you do with .rar files? can you get something for them without paying 30 euros? has anyone tried this “get it free with trialpay” from winace and did your computer blow up?

August 1, 2008 at 4:09 pmhi slyme
1) click on them and download them to your computer
2) unzip them (ie uncompress the file) using decompression software – i’m a fan of alpha zip: http://www.alphazip.com/
.rar is just another compressing format like .zip and most unzipping things can deal with the different formats

August 1, 2008 at 6:05 pmIceows works fine on XP, maybe it’s a Vista thing. If you don’t want your icons to change, make sure you untick the file association box that usually pops up when installing stuff. Other free Vista programs here, make sure that they’re freeware & not shareware:

August 1, 2008 at 7:16 pmPowerArchiver is a decent freeware application for handling ZIP and RAR archives, amongst others. You can download it from:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7205,00.asp
Dunno if it works with Vista, though. Why not set up a Linux box with your music on – run it through a router and you can access your music with your Vista box across the network and do all the downloading/archiving etc with nice free Linux programs!

August 3, 2008 at 11:52 amA link to a Flash video someone has made of the classic 1983 ‘Song Poem’ single by John Trubee called ‘Blind Mans Penis’…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH8uZgtztok
John Trubee (a teenager at the time) wrote a stream-of-consciousness poem and sent it to a ‘Song poem’ company who (for a fee) would set your words to music and press up a single for you…
Here’s an article on the whole thing:
http://saltosobrius.blogspot.com/2006/09/its-erect-because-hes-blind.html
I’ve got hundreds of ‘Song Poems’ – at best hilarious, at worst just plain painful…

I have just uploaded my new ‘art’ gallery, so if possible could some of you give it a visit and beta test it for me ?

any feedback on code, design and content etc would be much appreciated.
cheers in advance

August 6, 2008 at 11:46 am@Jakoh-> Nice site. One small thing: if I left- or right-click on any of the thumbnails in your array of pictures in the gallery, it becomes black (and, as intended, the larger picture is shown in the right-hand pane. If I then rollover any of the other thumbnails, the picture in the large pane changes to show the one which I’ve rolled over, but the original thumbnail which I originally clicked on remains black.
And, in the meantime, it might be a good idea to have a simple ‘mailto’ link in the ‘Contact’ section so that people can report bugs direct to your site rather than having to do it on here!

August 6, 2008 at 12:20 pmhi Jah, thanks for the comments.
Yep I know what you mean, tis a small problem in the css which at present I carnt suss out, but I am working on it.
Good point concerning the email link, point taken.
Thanks agin for the comments, I shall set to it asap.

August 6, 2008 at 3:53 pm@Jakoh->Another thing: if I either hover over or click on a thumbnail to see the large image in the right-hand pane, then as soon as I move the mouse away (for instance to click on the right-hand pane to view the link behind it, another “hover” event gets handled and the image in the right-hand pane changes to the thumbnail which I’ve just moved the mouse over. If I then move the mouse off of the array of thumbnails completely, the image which I selected by clicking then comes back. Weird!
I don’t know anything about css but looking at the page source, I’d guess it’s something to do with the lines in the code which mention “focus” and the bit which mentions “visited”.

August 6, 2008 at 4:15 pmhi Jah,
right again, I have tried to figure this one out myself, but to no avail as yet.
Im not that hot on css either, and am just getting to grips with it myself.
The site I got the css from also has this ‘problem’ with there demo gallery.
Your right though, it is something to do with the “hover” event, but once you have clicked a thumbnail the larger image will stay where it is even if you mouse over the others – without clicking them, it will always return to the last clicked image.
A pain as you say, concerning the ‘buy’ aspect, though that will work off a double click of the thumbnail to open a new tab/window. So it should be click once to view bigger image and double click to go to buying/further details etc.
I will spend sometime this weekend trying to clear it up …. here’s hoping and thanks once again for looking and commenting.

August 6, 2008 at 6:37 pm@Jakoh-> the other demo on that site seems to work perfectly…
http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menu/gallery.html#nogo
It holds onto the selected image, doesn’t blank out either the thumbnail under the hover cursor or the most recently selected one. Only thing is that the big image is under the thumbnails rather than to the right. Shouldn’t be a problem though…
The page source for the one that works looks much simpler. All you need to do, I guess, is to plug in the event handlers from this one into the layout from the one you want it to look like, scrap the event handlers from the dodgy one, and it’s job done.
Happy coding!

August 7, 2008 at 12:05 am@Stewey-> Are you watching? Yes? OK… I’m disassembling my subroutines, one at a time. And I’m watching myself do it. Look at my great big call stack. Peek, Poke, Peek, Poke. I want you to give me a great big thunk off of your heap. Yes, now let me see your main() function. And your handle. Oh, HWND!!!! Now you can have me by the window. Oh, my, that’s a FAR pointer. You’re going to take me out of process if you keep doing that. Are you running that thing in safe mode though? I don’t want a general protection fault that could mean I end up spawning all sorts of little objects. Oh, God, I’m about to leak gigabytes all over your RAM.

August 7, 2008 at 7:15 pmDoing something important?!?! My god, man, I could feel my ports just about to open when there was a system failure. I think you may have permanently damaged something :O
PS I realise we all have our little peccadilloes (although I also have a tiny armadillo, which is similar but somehow sicker (particularly when lubricated)…) but I was just wondering: isn’t Jah Pork Pie sort of religiously and sexually offensive at the same time? Maybe it’s a preference you should keep to yourself? Just a thought…

August 7, 2008 at 10:40 pm@Stu->”although I also have a tiny armadillo, which is similar but somehow sicker (particularly when lubricated)…)”
Reminds me of the Dime Bar adverts in the 90s: “Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside… ARMADILLO!”
The thing about the name was a good spot on your part there: I’m told I was most certainly religiously and sexually offensive in my youth. The name was something that Wank Stain and me came up with one evening over a bottle of cheap voddy from his local offie, and I think it reflected me beautifully!

December 21, 2008 at 11:55 pmI found some broadcasts by Adrian Sherwood from 2002, around the time of Chainstore Massacre and Never Trust A Hippy. One is a Radio 1 World preview of some of the new On-U material at the time. The second is a live mix from Paris with Ghetto Priest, which is pretty relentless and very impressive stuff – noisy dancehall indeed!
