Music Downloads…

All the music downloads on the site have been deleted by persons unknown from the server.

They CAN be uploaded again, but firstly Tony Puppy will have to get to the bottom of why this has happened.

It could be that the host site have done something incredibly unethical and pulled the plug for some reason. The hosting site has not sent any emails to Tony concerning any problems or maintenace with the KYPP site over this weekend.

If the hosting company deny any knowledge then it could be a disgruntled hacker deliberately wiping of all the downloads.

Either way all my personal mp3 files ARE SAFE, just need to be reloaded, which would take some time but is do-able at least.

I am not going to reload until I know that the hosting site will not take them down, if they were responsible for the deletions in the first place.

Tony and Gerard will keep me updated with news on this matter, and I will proceed with reinserting all the mp3 files when I get told to do so.

This could take several days to get to the bottom of, so keep checking back.

Bunch of arse…

Glad that you don’t have to deal with it yourself today, Pengy.
Great night last night, got a sore head?

What a total and utter [insert expletive]. The music here is a historic archive of national and international importance. It is unique, there is music on here that is available nowhere else, much of it in a format – cassette tapes dating back nearly 30 years – which will soon be degraded beyond recovery.

The vinyl archives saved here are of records released in very small quantities (typically 500 to 1000) on micro-record labels which were as fleeting and transitory as the groups whose music they documented.

The music cannot be considered in isolation from the social and political context in which it was created. Although scarcely registering in the numerous academic (cultural studies based) and popular historical accounts of the punk era, even the briefest reading of the material here reveals the ways in which punk developed as a complex series of negotiations between the dominant culture, various counter and subcultures through the period 1977 to 1986, becoming itself an element of subsequent musical, social and political developments.

The music acts as a bridge from the personal, fragmented and historically unconscious memories of participants to the collective, cohesive and informed historical consciousness of the participants. .. thus facilitating the negation of spectacular time and spectacular history.

Shit!, mind you, it could be something and nothing, had it happen to me a while back, and the site hosting the files were doing some maintainence, but didn’t bother to inform anyone, which was nice of ’em, here’s hoping for ya penguin, it wasn’t so much having to put all the links back, but more the time factor, when I could have been putting new stuff up that hacked me off, talking of which; those hackers, well there are some arseholes out there that do target blogs and delete their files, for whatever twisted reason, cos that’s happened to a couple of sites, but not for a while though, anyway all the best.

There’s also the option of uploading them as torrent files and providing links to the torrents. Once they’ve been up there a while, and enough people have downloaded them from you, there will be people seeding them. Kind of acts as a distributed backup almost.

You can then just check once in a while whether anyone’s seeding them (and if anyone encounters them on here and nobody’s seeding them you can reseed them for a bit).

Might be worth having a look at anyway.

Isn’t there also some repository that the Linspire guy runs which allows you to upload your entire MP3 collection to? Maybe worth a butchers too.

Yes, that’s a bummer… Hope it’s nothing serious. Still, you can start with the Managing Directors when you re-upload (*winks*)

The Subway Sect gig was pretty good after you had to leave to get to Angel Dan. I managed to get about 30 folk in for £3 a head, so that was nice of the venue. Stayed out way past my bedtime…

Bunch of fat, hairy arse indeed Pengers… hope it gets sorted soon chaps. If it’s a spotty, teeny hacker, lets track them down and insert a hard drive where the sun don’t shine…

On another note, humble apologies to all for not making it last night, especially to John last name withheld… lame excuses sent in an email to him, hope you all had a great night anyway. I didn’t, just sat at home with a dark cloud above my head. Oh well lets just ensure there’s another get together sooner rather than later, where I will be without fail, even if I have to be dug up lol! ;-D

Nice teddy too, shall we have a ‘guess the name competition’ while we wait for all the uploads to come back?!

johng, thanks for the concern. 1020 downloads 13 GB in all. I think the reloading should be simple enough. At least I will not have to rerecord or adjust links on the post. Will take a bit of time though, but I got some decent kit so hopefully will be relatively smooth.

The official word is that the hosting company ‘Streamline’ has taken all mp3’s off the site with no advance warning to KYPP as the mp3’s breach the terms and conditions of said company.
KYPP have 28 days to appeal this decision to get them re-uploaded by that company.
Hopefully Tony and Gerard can overturn this decision by the company as the (mostly) rare stuff I have uploaded for over nine months will have all been wasted to all new and future visitors to this site.
Obviously I will not be able to upload new material on mp3 either if the decision is not overturned.

How about just putting them all up as Bitorrents? I’m sure there’ll be at least some people seeding them all the time. I’m sure that we’ll all leave them to seed, so they’ll be there when someone wants to get them.

Like I say, better than nothing.

Unfortunately, I had a funny feeling this would happen sooner or later. Happened to a friend of mine’s site a few years ago. Most likely someone complained to host server and the fact they didn’t contact you first would suggest they knew the most expedient procedure. I’d simply say only do the tapes and recordings of bands people know members of in future as , you could argue you’ve been given permission from ‘copyright holders’ in these cases, which is true enough. And at the end of the day, that’s the stuff people are most interested in anyway, if they’re after major label stuff there’s 101 other sites anyone can download that from, and at the end of the day i’m sure more people are gonna come here to listen to ‘Nazi Born & Bred’ by The Heretics than ‘Heroes’ by Bowie! 🙂
Anyway, hope you get it all sorted out soon and all the best. Would be such a wank if all your labours have been lost.

It was great seeing all of you, I did take some photos that I’ll be sending anyone I have contact info for everyone else if you get in touch through either my site or here I’ll do my best to get them to you. It was great seeing everyone and a really fun night. Thanks everyone for showing up and I’ll try and make sure I make it back to London again a bit sooner next time. Cheers Penguin, JC,Luggy and everyone else for putting it all together.

I’m really sorry I didn’t make it the other night, I had a feeling it wouldn’t work out which is more annoying given as I only live 10 minute from there. Gutted that I missed the likes of Ann and Mitch too – people I haven’t seen in years and years.

Still awaiting reply from the hosting site on this problem. Tony has been on it, and they are aware of the appeal made by Tony.
Never fear, even if the hosting site dig their heels in, Tony and Gerard have some plans afoot…do not panic…downloads will be back to normal soonish.

UPDATE: The painfully shite Streamline hosting company has taken over a week to reply to Tony’s ‘appeal’ with a “No, sorry guv, cant do that innit”.
Tony and Gerard will be working towards a solution to get this train back on track, and the music uploads, past, present and future will at last be playable again. Unfortuanatly it may take up to a month to get everything back to normal. We are as frustrated as you, the good KYPP public, about this situation. Streamline did not give any warning to Tony of what was about to happen from their end, if they had given say 28 days or so, then cut the mp3s out of the links, we could have worked toward a solution earlier to recify this action. I woke up one morning and everything was snatched, and they are very slow at getting back to the paying customer. All mp3 files are safe though and will be replaced in time.
Anyone putting a site together should avoid Streamline hosting if you can help it.

There’s also Rapidshare, Mediafire, Megaupload, Zshare, etc., most of which seem to be pretty reliable.

i have had endless run ins with streamline’s customer (non) service. they really are shite. oddly though they have never done anything about the mp3s on my site which have had huge numbers of downloads. i would hazard a guess that one of the artists whose music was uploaded here complained to them.

I’d just like to say that this site has been a source of a lot of recaptured memories. It has given me the opportunity to hear not only great, unheard music, but also personal favourites which I grew up with. I already own a lot of the songs on tape or vinyl, but as technology has changed, don’t currently have the chance to listen to it in that format. This site has changed that and I really do appreciate the site and the hard work that has obviously gone into making it so good. Thanks a lot to all involved. Keep the faith.

UPDATE: We are now free of the troublesome Streamline hosting and we have joined up with Gerard’s bunch ABISTI which should work out much more pleasant to deal with. Gerard has been involved in this site since inception and will be quicker to sort things out if any problems appear in the future. He is also sympathetic to the KYPP cause being there or thereabouts in the KYPP punk scene way back in the day…

Next Tony Puppy will have to decide how and who to out source the mp3 files too. Either a rapidshare deal in which case I will have to redo every mp3 link on the site and possibly re transfer from mp3 to RAR, or to a foreign based business dealing in download activity. Until I know from Tony Puppy the full sp, I remain impotent at least in a working on site way.

    Hi folks,

Tonight we moved hosts, but there is still an issue with the mp3s. At least on our new host it should be easier to control any problems.

The music will have to be re-established through rapid share type places. When I last used these sites I found speedyshare good as the end user didn’t have a mountian to climb to get to the music. But no one seems to recommend it (see David Says June 29th).

I’ve been recommended mediafire and sharebee (which uploads to four different sites) and shareonall (which uploads to 5 different sites).

It’s a pain because before we could just click on something that sounded interesting and hear it, now there’s a whole palaver which is off-putting to the mildly curious.

Of course I’m in denial as to how this is actually going to get done, whichever file sharing service is used.

    Any thoughts?
