Took me ages to write out this tracklisting so hope someone listens to the post! I got this LP for three artists only Xmal Deutschland. Abwarts and Einsturzende Neubauten. Knew nothing of the other artists when the LP came into my possession, and still know nothing about them now…Sorry. Came with a great newspaper style insert which I obviously can not read.
Xmal I got to love early on, when they got known in the U.K. that is, not early on in Germany. I saw them several times all over London, The Clarendon, The Venue, Hammersmith, somewhere else, another place I can’t remember, and also the last night of the old Lyceum down The Strand. Great band, don’t know what happened to them after 1985 though. The first Xmal 7″ single is on this site somewhere also Einsturzende Neubauten live LP cassette on Zick Zack.
Very strange and ekeptic LP, but worth a listen.

March 9, 2008 at 9:15 pmyes great stuff Freiwillige Selbstcontrolle were Peel faves for a while
I seem to remember a Palais Schaumberg album with a plug on the cover – may have been called that and i obviously was impressed enuf at the time to have gone out and bought it! Think Andreas Dorau was part of Die Doraus and Die Marinas with an early mute single

March 10, 2008 at 10:10 amAll these bands could be classed as part of the ‘Neue Deutsche Welle’ music scene which sprang up at the very end of the 1970’s. The term itself was first coined in a Sounds article in 1979, and John Peel used to play a lot of it (which is where I first heard most of the bands)…
Die Todliche Doris (aka The Deadly Doris) were a performance art-tinged group from Berlin who released many records and cassettes (including music on tiny discs that were played by a doll), and produceding a number of Super-8 films. They regularly played at S036 (as immortalised by Killing Joke). Last year they had a very interesting retrospective exhibition in Newcastle…The group used to offer every single song they had released for free download on their website: unfortunately, new legislation putt he kibosh on that, but if you write to the group (via their website) they will make all of their recordings available to you gratis…

Palais Schaumberg featured Holger Hiller (who has had a long recording career) and Thomas Fehlmann (who went on to be a member of The Orb, to have a residency at Tresor and who currently records for the Kompakt record label). The director of ‘Control’ (Anton Corbijn) made his first music video for the group…
Freiwillige Selbskontrolle (aka FSK) have continued recording to the present going through various different permutations in terms of sound (Punk, Country, Techno). Their name means ‘voluntary self control’ and refers to the motion picture ratings system in Germany…

March 10, 2008 at 12:37 pmdoes anyone have the ‘Neue Deutsche Welle’ DVD that came out a year or so ago? http://www.empty.de/Aufbruch.htm – looks great.
CUT’N’PASTE:
Recorded in 1980, Aufbruch In Die Endzeit is a documentary of the early German “Neue Deutsche Welle” and punk scene, with very rare footage from DAF, KFC (with Tommi Stumpf), Abwärts, ZK, Fehlfarben, Freiwillige Selbskontrolle, Der Moderne Mann, Mania D, Der Plan, and as bonus tracks, Liaisons Dangereuses, Wirtschaftswunder and Malaria. Originally titled “1980 New Wave Hit Exposion”, this film was released as a VHS video cassette in 1980 by Monte Video, and contains live gigs, interviews and videos that are available nowhere else. Great sound, good picture quality and nice menu graphics make this a must for every fan of early German independent music.
there was a really amazing scene that seemed to develop there, more ‘arty’ (perhaps more influenced by the NY ‘no wave’ scene?) but a whole load more invigorating than what punk was becoming over here at the time, and some great bands, many of whom sound surprisingly contemporary today; the likes of ‘erase errata’ or ‘chicks on speed’ being almost neue Deutsche welle tribute acts.
lots of great clips of many of the better known acts up on youtube if you have a look – DAF, liaisons dangereuse, malaria etc.
and Micky, i’ve got a few Die todliche Doris and Abwarts LPs if you’re interested.

July 10, 2008 at 11:11 pmI know my memory’s going, so I hope someone will help me out here. I remember going to see Einsturzende Neubauten – or it may have been Test Department – at some gig in a railway arch, erm, somewhere, at – erm – some time, possibly early ’80s, but it was definitely in London lol and the Old Bill stormed the place in very large numbers. Made all the punks line up to be searched before they could leave. There was a mass throwing of narcotics onto the floor, obviously…
The band promised to rehold the gig for free, and never fucking did. I still want my money back…

July 14, 2008 at 5:58 pm@Stu->I saw a very passable Einstürzende Neubaten tribute band the other day. More electric than the original but that’s because they prefer the Kango hammer to the pneumatic drill, I think. They did a set that lasted nearly a week, and after the encore at the end they even filled in the hole in the road.
Well, I say it was a free gig, but I suppose you pay for it on the Council Tax really. The “Portsmouth City Council” costumes were very reminiscent of early-period Kraftwerk, too.

July 14, 2008 at 6:07 pmThink they are currently touring Porker. Similar bunch were down my road t’other day also. Was thinking of recording them to put on the site (when we get music running again) but they seemed to stop the performance when I came out and just sat around scratching their balls and drinking tea. Not a great sound really. Maybe OK for a minimilist record label like Basic Channel.
Will try again if the come back at some point.

July 14, 2008 at 6:50 pmLol! Ahhhh, it’s good to see that not EVERYONE’S braincells have been ravaged by drugs… I almost laughed, but I do try not to because my teeth are falling out from – erm – the ravages of drugs 🙂

I blame the privatisation of council works departments. Just record them doing sod all for 2 minutes, then bung it on side 1 of the LP and call it “The Sound Of Free Markets”. 😉
