Househunters – 53rd & 3rd Records – 1986

Cuticles

Shopping City

Jowe Head, Stoke Newington artist and full time dreamer, ex member of Swell Maps and Television Personalities comes out of his Gladding Terrace Co-Op abode with his band of Stokey misfits, and performs rather wonderfully eccentric and chaotic gigs, at dives like The Three Crowns in Stoke Newington, and upstairs at The Crown And Castle in Dalston. Sitting somewhere between The Primatives, The Pastels and Inner City Unit, this poptastic debut 12″ (one of two 12″ released) was played something like a dozen times in a row in the Penguin bedroom when I got the vinyl out of it’s sleeve. That’s in one hour! Not many records get that attention from me. Listening to ‘Cuticles’ again it still sounds great (and I have played it about five times this time).

Househunters lasted only a couple of years, Jowe went on to perform again with Television Personalities, and performed in the biggest gig for that band during this time supporting Nirvana at Kilburn National, Kirk Cobain personally invited them to play this gig, and had to come on halfway through the set to ask the grunge fans to stop hassling the band, the soft sounds of the TVP’s were not quite Soundgarden riffs!

Jowe Head is a wonderful fellow, and no doubt still hangs around N16. The Coach And Horses and Jolly Butchers pubs were places I normally bumped into him.

Never heard of him or the band, lol! But just as a matter of pedantry, it’s Glading Terrace (one ‘d’), and you’ve reminded me re a previous post – I do believe that’s where Andi Martin was living when I first met him, in some derelict squat there… 🙂

Glading Terrace was a co-op of flats and Andy martin did live there, and Buster from Bad Manners had one of the downstairs flats and there was always hoards of Skinheads coming and going.
Me Lisa and Bob (Blood & Roses) Sack(Colbolt Hate) and 2 tone Steve moved into a house opposite(Batley rd) not realizing we were ending up next to yet another Skinhead nest!!
