The Three Johns – Abstract Records 1983

Think there must have been a terrible accident in Leeds at the beginning of the 1980’s. Spinal Tap style all the drummers in the area seemed to have exploded. Bands like The Three Johns, Sisters Of Mercy, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, March Violets all seemed to prefer a member of the band that you could easily turn off and stick in the van with no agg. Suppose it made a change than trying to control a lively apres gig, Keith Moon or Jon Bonham character!

The Three Johns third single is rather wonderful, Jon Langford from the original Mekons band created this band as a stand against the warmness of Thatcher’s perfect vision for this kingdom. The warmness of Thatcher’s kingdom lasted no minutes, the Three Johns are still playing gigs now in 2008, no idea how good they are now I am afraid, but they were more than excellent 25 years ago.

On the back of the sleeve, the band thank the Villa Zuid which was the squat complex set up by The Ex (and members of Svatsox and De Groeten) in the small town of Womer in Holland…

Hagar the Womb also recorded for Abstract Records…

I love Langford’s ‘Bug’ outfit in the pic..

The Three Johns were excellent, massively championed by John Robb at the time. The album “Atom Drum Bop” I think !, was superb as were the singles that they put out at the time.

Not seen/heard anything by them for 20 odd years, but like the original poster said, they were truly excellent back then
