The Last Poets – Douglas Records – 1977

It’s A Trip

Blessed Are Those Who Struggle

Delights Of The Garden

Dunno why, thought this would be a relevant upload today of all days 5th November 2008.

The Last Poets performing some of the best material they ever recorded on the massively influential LP ‘Delight’s Of The Garden’. All Last Poets material is great and well worth searching out, this LP though, in my opinion, is the best.

The Last Poets always wrote from a black man perspective, lyrics specifically aimed at U.S. goverment sponsored racism on the home front, and abroad, Vietnam for example, during the late 1960’s and the late 1970’s.

I wonder what the surviving members think about the news of the U.S.A election victory today.

As a small matter of interest, Mark Stewart And The Maffia performed a version of ‘Blessed Are Those Who Struggle’ early on in there career.

There are tracks from the Last Poets debut LP, self titled, and the second LP ‘This Is Madness’ on this site if you care to search it out with the search function.

After Dr Martin Luther King’s march to Washington D.C. in 1963, the ‘million man march’ in 1995 (also held in Washington D.C), five decades of focused African American struggle, and of course many hundreds of years of not so focused struggle against Uncle Sam, the U.S.A. finally has a non white president.

Whether Barack Obama’s policies will ultimately map out a fairer future for all citizens in the U.S.A, and of course the rest of the world, remains to be seen. Let’s hope so…I remember thinking a similar thing about New Labour in 1997 and some of those policies by that party went tits up somewhat, domestically and further out into the wider world…

Seems to me while looking at the news a lot of the day, that there is an optimism running throughout a lot of the U.S.A. and the world including China, which can not be a bad thing.

Let’s see how long the optimism lasts, we will have to wait and see…

After the 7 years of mean-spirited xenophobia and greed in this country, post 9/11, this can only be a good thing. I think he’s a fine speaker and seems intelligent. One of the most amazing historical events of our time whichever way you slice it.

Lets face it. It’s a black man in the white house.
    It’s a good thing
While we on this site may be radical anarchos, the rest of the planet sees things rather differently.
And from that pragmatic view point it has the potential at least, to usher in a new perspective that the US can build on.
New labour did go tits up but much of politics is trying to sort out things as they happen.
The US had to enter Afghanistan. And Tony B wanted to help. Thats the way it goes.
Its a mess that the brits may have started years ago but Mr Bin Laden had declared war. To do nothing wasn’t an option for them.
Sam, Tony B txtd me this morning.

Time to play ‘Chocolate City’ by ParliamentFunkadelicthang I reckon. Obviously a momentous day and about time. Good that the Chinese have made positive noises, not so sure about the Russian threat of posting missiles next to Poland, I think they are testing Obama already.

Was in New York last week and there seemed to be a huge amount of positive energy for Barack, but my hosts pointed out that neither side had even bothered campaigning in NYC as it is so solidly Democrat.

Anyone heard the Funkadelic ‘Toys’ CD that came out recently?
It’s a CD of outtakes and unreleased material (including recordings from the ‘Free Your Mind’ sessions) and it’s a blast: some fantastic acid funk jams on it…

George Clinton complimented me on my bassplaying once (at a concert in Tokyo)…nice…

Calm it a little guys, don’t let this escalate too much.
Sound Hound and Gabe, this is no place for a blog against blog arguement (or misunderstanding). Try to keep it all inhouse on your own sites please. Nice one.

I wonder, Sound Hound, if Rod from the blog gives ‘credit’ for ‘the work’ to the sites which he takes from to illustrate his posts (for example, the cover art and photographs)?
Or give ‘credit’ for ‘the work’ to the people who originally recorded and exchanged the live tapes he puts on his blog?

It’s almost laughable to see people engaged in putting other people’s music on blogs take a ‘moral’ stance regarding ‘their work’…
    🙂

Oh I dunno Nic, Mr P can occupy the moral high ground if he wants. This site is the ultimate morality after all.

Baron dear, Nic is not having a pop at me. I know that some of the tapes I upload are my property and recorded by me at the time. Some tapes though have been swapped or bought at the time, at gigs or along market stalls in Portabello / Camden markets way back when, and are now on this site. These examples can not really be credited as such as Nic rightly stresses. Released records are obviously not our ‘property’ to credit unless I know the bands personally. Luckly I know a few…but obviously not all!
Like I say above I do not mind other blogs taking them for there sites.
A mention would be nice as it increases the KYPP browsers perhaps a little bit, so more browsers can add to the ‘Obscure Chris low Tape’ thread not because I performed the ‘work’ in the first place!
Incidently I credit the source of the material be it Pack demos / Rondos 7″ single in Nics case or loads of Chris Low and a little bit of Sean Forbes lend outs. I will also credit where the text is from (mainly the wikki) so I try to keep all parties happy in case of misunderstandings like the one brewing above.
I do like your qoute above though Zubber
‘This site is the ultimate morality’ has a nice tone to it, may use it in the headings! 😉

Kind of trying to keep that whole ‘messiah’ thing a little quiet Andus, don’t tell anyone that it is actually me ok. It was / is all fortold I believe.
I tried to get myself together for the second (or is it third) coming. But I woke up a little late. Perhaps tomorrow.

What, you really are the messiah, so we’ll have to go on pilgrim’s to the antarctic., makes sense, the last messiah went into the barren desert, you come from the barren antarctic,

So this is how you managed to walk on water, we were conned, it was ice.

Nic most of the cover art/photos are taken by me from my own records so what’s your point? Please feel free to discuss anything you have a problem with over at my site. Penguin, I’m sorry that Gabe has brought this pathetic arguement to your pages that was not my intention merely the actions of someone who obviously can’t keep our disagreement between ourselves and our respective sites! I would echo your request to any viewers who have an opinion to discuss elsewhere. Thanks… All the best, Rod.

Hi Rod, thanks for the comment. Again I have no problem with other blogs, the more the merrier.
All the material I upload (apart from Nics actually, who has emailed me music files for some posts) I have in my hand physically here at Penguin Towers and upload it fresh. Either on vinyl or cassette, magazine articles (not some photos, some get emailed to me). I do not take uploads from other sites, there is no need, I have enough stuff here to keep the site fresh.
What happens to those uploads afterwards I have no real worry about. Whether they end up on U.S. sites or Asian ones or whatever. Spreading the word on bands like The Mob I feel is ok. I notice some of my Crass practise postings are elsewhere now. Similerly a lot of bands and individuals on myspace have got stuff up from this KYPP site.
I know what I have uploaded so it is easy to spot. Like Nic (I think) is suggesting I would feel it wrong for me to police it and get narky with other sites just cos my Mob ‘Punk Lives’ cover with Mick B written on the side of it is on so many other sites, ditto the music downloads!
What younger (or older!) bloggers need to think about is just a small mention of (for arguements sake) KYPP if a lot of material is taken from the site (just as an advertisment – not because I did the graft of ripping and uploading posts).
I notice your site has our KYPP link on the side of the page, which is exactly the thing I am talking about. I do not know if you have taken stuff from this site, and again do not mind in the least if you have, but thanks for the link.
Do not be too hard on Gabe or Nic, I asked who was hassling him / her, he / she mentioned your name (I thought it was a ‘Puppy’ member you see, that’s why I asked), Sound Hound countered, Nic took up the objective view, and he you are now.
Should try to stick together and would suggest Gabe stick up a post for your site if he / she has been taking stuff of it (again for the advertising side of things).
And yes feel free to continue this talk on those sites which you can reach by right clicking on the names and choosing open in other tab.

Talking about Brian’s Nic, whatever happened to the forehead!

Did you know you can’t read SxxT in the library ! I know, cause my computer collapsed the other day, so I went down the library to look at my ebay site, but because I have an Icon ad single called Don’t feed us SxxT for sale, it would let me look at the page, The computer reported me the receptionist, well, my computer number and Ip address was, so I hightailed it out of the place, I am waiting for the council to knock on my door and whisk me off to the Ministry of Love.

I have been censoring myself ever since, you have probably noticed the x’s in my swear words for this blog.
