The Last Poets – Douglas Records – 1977

It’s A Trip

Blessed Are Those Who Struggle

Delights Of The Garden

Dunno why, thought this would be a relevant upload today of all days 5th November 2008.

The Last Poets performing some of the best material they ever recorded on the massively influential LP ‘Delight’s Of The Garden’. All Last Poets material is great and well worth searching out, this LP though, in my opinion, is the best.

The Last Poets always wrote from a black man perspective, lyrics specifically aimed at U.S. goverment sponsored racism on the home front, and abroad, Vietnam for example, during the late 1960’s and the late 1970’s.

I wonder what the surviving members think about the news of the U.S.A election victory today.

As a small matter of interest, Mark Stewart And The Maffia performed a version of ‘Blessed Are Those Who Struggle’ early on in there career.

There are tracks from the Last Poets debut LP, self titled, and the second LP ‘This Is Madness’ on this site if you care to search it out with the search function.

After Dr Martin Luther King’s march to Washington D.C. in 1963, the ‘million man march’ in 1995 (also held in Washington D.C), five decades of focused African American struggle, and of course many hundreds of years of not so focused struggle against Uncle Sam, the U.S.A. finally has a non white president.

Whether Barack Obama’s policies will ultimately map out a fairer future for all citizens in the U.S.A, and of course the rest of the world, remains to be seen. Let’s hope so…I remember thinking a similar thing about New Labour in 1997 and some of those policies by that party went tits up somewhat, domestically and further out into the wider world…

Seems to me while looking at the news a lot of the day, that there is an optimism running throughout a lot of the U.S.A. and the world including China, which can not be a bad thing.

Let’s see how long the optimism lasts, we will have to wait and see…

It’s my duty to warn you ALL that, last December, I bought the rights to the entire gamut of anarcho-punk recordings ((from Harry Roberts)). I think you’ll find you’re ALL in infringement of my copyright and intellectual property (worth more than your house right now, sucka!)

Penguin, I believe you’re the leader of this site’s disfunctional, mutant tribe – so I’ll address you directly. You currently owe me £34,870. Please settle this balance and then delete this blog in its entirety.

I have retroactively copyrighted the slogan ‘warning HM Govt can damage your health’, and am now seeking royalties from any anarcho-punk band or zine that has used this slogan as part of their artwork over the last 30 years, which means I stand to rake in a cool £78 billion.

They could get mighty baity about that Graham and damage your health.

But you forgot to patent the mohican and the pogo and the grapple.

Martin C is perfectly correct you should put Academy 23 up.

My legal team are currently working on ascertaining the copyright status of the ‘skellington punk with a mohican’ image. Its possible that Spiralseed may be able to obtain intellectual property rights to the entire concept, meaning a windfall financial bonanza when we begin to retroactively make claims.

The arrangement is drawn up that Martin C gets paid for the royalties in stale biscuits which are now ready to collect at his cost.
Come and get them. Due to Gabe taking eight posts for his site, you owe Martin three biscuits.
Due to Zubber being rude, the nurse in the ‘special’ home that he resides in will increase his dosage of pheno-barbitol.
Graham gets nothing due to him being a mentalist.
Hey the times wrong on the site! Pretty damn punk that is…great stuff.

5th of November? Pengy, you cheeky thing!

You’re obviously trying to prompt us into MLK territory when you really mean to honour the last great 3.5 turns with double twist, pike and triple jowl flop of that great groundbreaker of the English legal system and hero of libel lawyers everywhere Cap’n Bob Maxwell, innit?

Can I just give a great hussah for the dear old interweb and the opportunities provided us since, and say that I’m completely sure that his grave is at least figuratively, if not literally (we can’t all afford to travel) drenched by the saliva of all of us who believe in freedom of speech, before I continue?

Anyhoo, The Last Poets are pretty poignant for us all here I think: a struggle, unsuccessful at the time, for liberty, combined with a predilection for life’s stronger substances. Voiced beautifully, with only the people who already agreed with them taking any notice. Now we have the first non-white President of the US, and he has the opportunity to address the racism that is still endemic there while still keeping the white middle and working-classes on his side by taxing the rich and challenging the time-honoured old-money-brings-power system.

Anarchy/autonomy it ain’t, but I do think that it will give a lot of people the chance for some self-valorisation that they’ve never had. And most of us would have felt better for that all those years ago. I do now.

Just BTW on the subject of The Last Poets, my late father’s favourite record ever was ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is’ by Esther Philipps. I make him right: the best cover I’ve ever heard, certainly. The Gil Scott-Heron thang is at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmkgZElCgE4 and you can see Esther giving it her all at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvdnMzQGbEQ

One of the people I used to have a lot of respect for in the late 70s was Malcolm X. I just thought it would be appropriate to post this from MLK about Malcolm: “While we did not always see eye to eye on methods to solve the race problem, I always had a deep affection for Malcolm and felt that he had a great ability to put his finger on the existence and the root of the problem. He was an eloquent spokesman for his point of view and no one can honestly doubt that Malcolm had a great concern for the problems we face as a race”.

Let’s not let all the Republican psephologists get away with unfounded irony and telling us that we’re indulging in hyperbole about the significance of Obama’s victory. I’m certain that in 40 years there could be a mentally-ill ex-punk with the last remnants of an afro in charge of the White House, regardless of colour.

Sign me up. I’ll knock the ciggies on the head and start going running if I need to.

They reformed, you already knew that, doing a small European tour with 1 gig in the UK so far in London, I will be at that. Compulsory. Still waiting for this Risen dvd I ordered. I would be interested in seeing a Bad Brains performance Jay Vee so your ‘accusation’ of some kind of censorship by myself is incorrect.

If I saw your comment I would certainly not remove it unlike a youtube video of how to look beautiful in the summer.

On which upload did you post it and when roughly? I will then investigate the spam folder for the time that you posted the comment to make sure it did not fall in there automatically.

Here you go Jay Vee. I have saved you the bother:
All the following comments you have made were found in the automatic spam folders under the name Jay (note: not your usual Jay Vee named comments that get through all the time). You should resend the link and attach it to a relevant Bad Brains upload on this site somewhere under Jay Vee. Did you change computers during this time or write some from an internet cafe?

I have deliberately changed Jay Vee’s email address btw although I am sure I will be accused of ‘censorship’ again.

Your apologies are accepted by myself in advance Jay.

The page concerned with every ‘jay’ spam is cut and pasted from the site admin side and listed below. Some of the comments sent as Jay were just dots … etc. Maybe Jay Vee was testing at this time.

    Here you go then:

Akismet has caught 6,071 spam for you since you first installed it.

You can delete all of the spam from your database with a single click. This operation cannot be undone, so you may wish to check to ensure that no legitimate comments got through first. Spam is automatically deleted after 15 days, so don’t sweat it.
