Sons Of Bad Breath – Wood Green Art Centre, London, N22 – 1985

Sons Of Bad Breath performance

An excellent recording of Monty and his Sons Of Bad Breath thrashers giving it all the effort they could muster on the night.

Part of the infamous Hackney Hell Crew. Pretty rough bunch of heavy drinking and heavy speeding squatters that formed an axis of bands such as Blower, Eat Shit, God Told Me To Do It and of course Sons Of Bad Breath.

Amongst the Hell Crew were Monty, Ollie, Pus, Simo, Martin, Animal, Napoleon, Sean, Bully, Alien and Scruff from Gateshead.

Some of the Hell Crew did not survive passed the 1980’s, the ones that did hopefully are well enough.

I was very pleased to see Ollie in Bristol in the early 1990’s at a Gunshot (UK Hip Hop) performance (on a boat in the docks that is actually a club). Ollie was Nike trainer’d up and looking well, in some sport tracksuit clobber. Very much a change from when I had last saw him, while on one of my regular visits to 108 Brougham Road to see Andy Martin and Dave Fanning.

At that time in the mid 1980’s, a whole bunch of the Hell Crew were camped out at this house including both Pus and Simo, two that did not make it through to the next decade.

Thanks to Clint for sending this tape in, and thanks to Mike from Decadent Few for recording it for Clint in the first place.

had not heard any sons of bad breath for years so ta for this.first met monty around 84 when he came up to manchester for a conflict gig and put the lot of them up for the night afterwards.
ended up moving down to that london and living with him and other scottish folk in a house behind the packington estate in islington.monty seemed to know london like the back of his hand and would take me on walks all over the capital lasting all day sometimes.he’d spent sometime in the army so i guess he was used to all that marching, the speed also helped.
havent seen him for years, last time being at an all day gig in notts when bagpipes was still a pup.
oh yeah,he was once a roadie for the 80’s band ‘joeboxers’.
    a top bloke,hope yer well.

Recently me `n Martin done a interview for next Ian Glasper book(out this year) and I did Int/vw for “Negative Reaction” zine no.11, only interviews I`ve ever done without coppers present. Glad to hear your ok. Adios, Monti………..To get a copy of “Negative Reaction”no.11 contact trevhagl@hotmail.com zine also features 4 Skins and Oi Polloi and much more. I aint heard Alfie Noakes for ages either but he`ll always have a place in my heart.

Sons of badbreath going to be part of a Hackney compilation album on Dutch label Wicked Witch, it should be released before the end of the year. On vinyl it`s` a double album and we`ve got a side. (Does that make sense??) I aint listened to tape yet in fact I dont think I`ve heard any SoBB stuff since 1987/8. Good to see poster at top of the page tho, Jeezus!! that annoyed a fair few people. I used to have all the gig posters but they`ve all vanished over the years so if anyone got one and can send me a copy it`d be much appreciated. Take care, Monti

Unbeleivable! i couldn’t really believe it the time, really, either…! i was giving this a listen last night and my 21 year old step son came into the room and said “are these guys just really out of their heads?” pretty much, says i, “i just heard that guy say ‘i don’t really know where i am'” he said. i’d missed that. hilarious. monti, martin, really glad to hear you’re still around.

i got a one sided single of Eat Shit off ebay a little while ago with a great bit of writing about Victoria Park road in it. i’ve often wanted to post it through the door so the people there now can learn a little of the history of their house… i wonder of they’d like that?

i think they`d probably want to move if they knew what went on in that house. If you read the SoBB chapter in the next Ian Glasper (Burning Britain…The Day the Country Died) book you`ll see what I mean. Martin, Alien, Olly and me are still in touch with each other. SoBB was started for fun, for us and everyone at the gigs and I think we acheived that, dont you? Fuckin crazy times tho.

I remember Eat Shit in 19AT5 at the Demolition Ballroom in Bristol, supposed to be a Disorder gig, I was playing bass for Skum Dribbzzz at the time, and the bloke in the photo with his dog looks like the twat that started trouble in the town centre pubs, and got chased back to the Demolition Ballroom by blokes in the straight pubs that he had shouted abuse to, with bar stool legs that they broke off, they were psyched out and wanted to kill him!
He also pissed on the back of my legs whilst we (Skum Dribbzz) were playing our set, cos Eat Shit wanted to borrow my bass and couldn’t wait to plug in and play themselves. However as a result of stirring the hornets in town centre, the Police soon arrived in riot vans and stopped the gig, and that possibly became the end of the Demolition Ballroom thereafter.
No hard feelings to any Eat Shit members, but Skum Dribbzzz was also started just for fun, and achieved more respect than than you lot cos we didn’t cause any violence at gigs.

1st things 1st, be very careful who you`re callin a “Twat” my friend cos I`m the guy in the photo. 2ndly it was Sons of Badbreath not Eat Shit playin. I certainly wasnt the person who started any trouble and this is the 1st time I`ve bin accussed of it(I still live in Bristol and go to gigs). My only involvement in the fight (I do remember it) was myself and Steve Allen (Disorder gtrst) gettin battered as we dragged a guy called Spoons (who had his collarbone broken) away from the mob. 4th I never pissed on your legs also I never played the bass. Livin in Bristol I know why the DB closed and it was`nt because of that. I remember your band and have nothin against you and if you feel you get more respect good for you cos I dont give a shit. Lastly apart from that gig there was never any violence at our gigs (SoBB) and thats a fact unlike your tale above.

Well Tim Cairns (SD guitarist) wouldn’t hesitate to call you names as he did on that night, after you pissed on my legs, I’m reliable at recognising people in photos, and it was you, not saying you played bass in Eat Shit or SoBB, just that you wanted to borrow my bass guitar for the bloke that played bass in Eat Shit, you were the pushy type, and you were so out of your face you pissed on the back of my legs telling me to hurry up and that’s a fact, not a tale. As for the trouble that got started, I can only say that a lot of people that were there that night were blaming it on Eat Shit, full stop. Have a nice life anyway.

Try to not let this escalate too much chaps…it was 23 years ago, shit happened and no doubt it was unfortunate for a heap of folk who were present on that night, but y’know…

Jay Vee you may be interested to know that a Scum Dribblers gig in Nottingham 1983 is uploaded on this site if you use the search function and put the band name in. It’s in the Sean Forbes post.

If anyone is still in contact with Tim Cairns from Scum Dribblers, Ian Glasper is interested to hear his story about the band for his 3rd book, UKHC from 1985 onwards.
Ian is the new bass player for Flux of Pink Indians, and can be found on myspace.com

Point taken Penguin but I take character assassination seriously. Also why keep mentionin Eat Shit they werent even fuckin there, this issue will be resolved after we meet face to face Jay Vee. Just for the record I was nothin to do with Eat Shit, now that is a FACT. I promise you Penguin I wont respond to any more of this baitin by someone sittin safely at home, while I can accept criticism I wont accept crap from someone, why should I??

Well according to ‘the record’ on this very post about how SoBB came about, it would appear that you were a lot to do with Eat Shit, Monti and I’m just as safely at home as you are for sure, behaving myself which as I understand it you have problems doing yourself…I have no desire whatsoever to meet you face to face, as I’ve already responded, the issue is resolved as far as I’m concerned, I’ve now got over having the back of my legs pissed on, I’ve moved on and can accept criticism from you anytime without meeting face to face, so why should you want to meet someone face to face if you truly weren’t the person that is being accused in the first place? Sounds like you have a complex that you want to resolve with violence, in the safety of…? and I don’t do violence as I’m disabled.

As for me havin complex’s clickin on your name accessed your myspace where you talk bout your mental health issues. I have friends with similar problems so I`m not unsympathetic to your situation. Also it might interest you to know my mate Gabba (FUK,ex Chaos UK) is in regular touch with your ex band mate Tim, and he`s goin to tell him to contact Ian, happier now?? Finally the Ballroom closed for 1 reason and 1 reason only…Smack!!! And the trouble was started by some drunk out of town punx. So now know who pissed on you and your message to Tim passed on plus free advert for Scumdribblers I`d say thats enuff to put this issue to bed,…Yes??? Yup Violence aint big or clever but then again neither am I…C`est la vie

Thanx Monti, a nice way to resolve a 23 year issue, I know the perils of Smack, and glad to hear Gabba 4 cox from Chaos UK is in contact with Tim, and R.I.P. to anyone that got lost along the way through the squat and / or Punk scene, it was a hard life, even though we didn’t actually live through the first or second world wars, we inherited the recycled hate of it, and small wonder we inherited some mental health issues as a result.

Jay Vee, Gabba called me a few hours ago to say he`s gave Tim Ian G`s no. Ian came to my gaff a while back to interview me and Martin bout SoBB Gabba and Hellbastard Scruff were there as well, it was a good nite. Ians a good bloke, the amount of work he`s put into his books, fuckin unbelieveable. Penguin thanx very much for these gig posters, much appreciated. Woman in photo was Olly`s Aunt who came round 281 to see Olly (who was out). She had a cup of tea, told us to tell Olly she`d be back then left. 30 minutes later Martin found the photo pinned to the inside of the front door. It gets weirder cos when Olly came back I told him his Aunt had bin round he replied “What Aunt”?? Turns out his dad`s a only child and his ma had 5 brothers. So really we dont know who she is. Maybe she`s the Aunt of one of the people who got annoyed??? Anybody know her???

I say chaps all’s well in love and war! Saw both Eat Shit and Scumdribblers back in the day. Eat Shit played after a Conflict in some London venue that I’m hard pressed to recall and tried to play in Northampton at the end of the evening too! Guys I have to say that if it was alcohol/speed whatever, you did tend to have a bit of an attitude which was intimidating to people but hey we were all youngsters once eh? Personally I loved Scumdribblers, seen em all over the place and I used to write to Tim regular. As for Jayvee, he is a top guy. Campaign for Musical Destruction!

I would never deny that some (most?) of the time the behaviour of the SoBB/ E. Shit/ Hackney H.C. people was at times extreme and sometimes out of order, at the end of the day it was as you say, silly boys being silly boys. I`ve read a few things that mention intimidation and I find this puzzling and lookin at the photo taken in 281 of most of the crowd, hilarious cos we look like a bunch of clowns fallen on hard times. Only 2 maybe 3 of us would have stood a chance of makin it to the end of round 1 against a wet paper bag. Jeezus People!! These were the days of the NF/BM and the general public who`s tolerance levels were a lot less than now. Being lifted up in the air to be thrown in front of a tube train by a mob of nazi skins in the Angel tube stn as I was, thats intimidating. Some weren`t as lucky as me and suffered badly even killed. Maybe intimidatin`s a bit strong given the times we lived in then, harder times than now.

I`d say character buildin rather than hard knock cos 90% of the situations I`ve been in have happened due to my choices of lifestyle. After all Glasgow street gang member/Army/Punk band/Member of well known “Outlaw” bike club aint the easiest path in life to choose. It`s the bullies who made my life hell (and I really do mean hell) until I was 8/9 when I realised that I was allowed to fight back who are to blame, after that everythin else just happened, there was no “game plan”. I have had 2 people sound me out about a book since I`ve “retired” since my body told me “enuff”. but I`d have to wait till loads of people died to prevent them gettin angry/arrested etc. If you read the interview I did in the latest Negative Reaction zine you`ll find that the tube station incident has a endin I`m sure you`ll approve of. Jay Vee mate, I knew I hadn`t pissed on your legs cos I`d never enter a confrontation with my cock out! Take care.
