Psychic TV – CBS acetate – 1983

The Orchid

Finale (incorrect title on label)

White Nights

Ancient Lights

Rare as hen’s teeth or a Tottenham Hotspur F.C. victory over Arsenal, this acetate (or dub plate in JA) was given to me by a member of Psychic TV in Beck Road, and I have lovingly kept it out of harms way ever since. This mastering studio acetate, was the first stage of this pressing run. This is NOT an advance white label test pressing…The test pressings were done afterwards for the actual individual two 7″ singles that were eventually sold in very small quantities with two tracks on each. My copy has all four tracks on, and like a ‘dub plate’ it runs for one track then you lift the needle for the second track. It smells beautiful as well…sniff!

The tracks are from the second LP by Psychic TV called ‘Dreams Less Sweet’ which had a fair amount of work put into the recording of the tracks. A special 4D microphone was used in caves, in churches and other significant buildings, also used to record kung fu lessons and attack dogs, to create a 4D surround sound – ‘Finale’ is a good track to check this effect with. BUT you will need four speakers! Don’t forget this was the era before anyone I knew had videos, and the UK had just got a fourth television station! Members of Psychic TV for this release run into dozens if you include choirs and orchestras. Absolutely brilliant release, even if it was a financial disaster for CBS.

Oh, ‘The Orchids’ is my favorite PTV tune along with ‘Roman P’ which is also on this site somewhere, use search function for more Psychic TV.

Had to smile when you mentioned the smell……..I just love wandering old vinyl record shops, you opened the door and the smell of plastic and mouldering cardboard sleeves hits you on the way in…Brilliant !

Ahh, yes, I also will be seen in second hand record shops all over the world given half the chance, but acetates / dubs smell much much better than vinyl and cardboard…they are much heavier and are not vinyl plastic…dubs are a layer of wax (acetate), on top of a metal disc, then mastered with the groove (music)…smells kind of like scented candle wax…I have several acetate / dubs, even one that Gregory Isaacs done for me in his African Museum studio in Kingston JA, as a song to my wife! His early 70’s track Love Is Overdue’ revoiced over the ‘Real Rock’ riddim.
