Starliner / TOYAN – Dance With Me
Ranking Toyan, Tottenham resident for many years with several other ex-pat Jamaican DJ’s, U Brown and Ranking Dread (yes THAT Ranking Dread) and ex home to the UK Sound System Champions 1977, 1978 and 1980 the mighty Fatman Sound System. Fatman pictured above with Lloyd Coxsone.
Toyan came up on the Killamanjaro Sound System in Jamaica. I witnessed the sound system in JA a couple of times and they were top notch, well after Toyan and his generation had gone to pastures new it must be stated.
The reason I have posted this record onto KYPP is for Gooner’s Tim and Simon to enjoy. The John McLean ‘Lovers Rock’ style tune advertising the Starliner Sound System is decent enoug but it is when the DJ cut starts that I pick up some further interest in the track.
Toyan mentions Capital Radio’s 1980’s reggae heavyweight DJ David Rodigan and the equally fine Radio London reggae DJ Tony Williams a few times. Personally what gets me going is Toyan’s excitement of his beloved team Tottenham Hotspur scoring the winning goal against ‘Rangers’ (QPR) who ‘lose control’ in the ‘F.A final’ at ‘Wembley Stadium’.
Pretty damn good, I was there that day in 1982, and I got a Toyan DJ cut commenting on that very same day! Cool huh?
Toyan was shot dead in 1991, that incident was not football related.
Normal KYPP posts continue after the break!

February 26, 2008 at 2:20 pmFatman is still based on West Green Road in Tottenham… I went to a dance with his sound, King Tubbys(UK) and Sir Coxsone Outernational a few months back at Broadwater Farm Recreation Centre. Fatmans rig was wicked!
That song is rubbish… there are plenty of UK MC’s who are Gooners though. Check man like Tippa Irie, Champion (Jamdown Rockers) etc. For decent mic men with sensible footie tunes you could also check Rodney P (ex London Posse) listen to the first tune on his myspace page “Been A Gunner Since…”)

Still Toyan is lot better than those sp*rs favourites Chas & Dave.
I’m still waiting for the download of Diamond Lights though…

February 26, 2008 at 2:33 pmYeah, Diamond Lights would be cool – batwing leather jackets and rolled-up sleeves, the perfect comedown to Sam Fox’s “Touch Me”
Does anyone know if Asher Senator was Spurs?

February 26, 2008 at 4:09 pmFatman cafe / late drink stop off has been based in Manor House at the Mirage resturant, Green Lanes towards Lordship Park Road, after he left the Flowerpot Club down at St Anns Road, Tottenham some years ago. Go in and say hi, say Penguin sent you…! Asher Senator I used to know when we distributed his record label, footie never came up but he had a hugh RED Toyota 4 x 4 so maybe he was one of those people…Diamond Lights I will dig out and put on the ARSE post, no probs…Fatman Record Shop down West Green Road was taken over by Junior and Steve (a Chelski fan!) of Renk Records for a while, but is now an afro carib hair place.

February 26, 2008 at 9:11 pmJohn, Jah Shaka vs Fatman down Lordship Lane, towards Wood Green N22 around 1989 was huge. Set in a squatted old shop upstairs. The place ended up selling dodgy carpets! Everybody had to (well I did) run when the shooting started about four in the morning! Plod everywhere…what a doss!
Me and Kevin Webb from Conflict RIP was at a Fatman do in Camden around that time as well, Fatman saw us, winked at us, then amazingly dropped ‘Armageddeon Time’ plus extended mix, not by Willie Williams but by The Clash…What a guy…always had something in his box for the couple of whitey’s that may show up! Still see Fatman and wifey Irene a fair bit at his place, and at my place…

February 27, 2008 at 1:31 amTim, this track is NOT RUBBISH mate, play it again, loud with full bass if your speakers can handle it. Solid 1982 riddem, rolls sweet. Don’t worry about that!
Also pretty sure that Daddy Toyan is probably one of the inspirations for Tippa Irie and all the younger DJ’s of the Saxon system, so he should demand respect whichever team he supports.
Met Rod P when we distributed a London Posse single advertising trainers BK Knights (uuuggghhh! Chumbawumba will not be pleased…) called ‘This Is London’ or something similar…nice bloke.
UNITY HI-FI Sound were cool, Ribs (defected) from the Fatman Sound plus Demon Rocker (Tottenham fan) and brother Flinty Badman (Liverpool fan) who went on to become The Ragga Twins…got loads of Sound System tapes. Do not think they would sit comfortably on this site though. Chas And Daves first LP on EMI is class, the track ‘Edmonton Green’ is really good. This band (before the crap charted party songs) supported the mighty Led Zeppelin at Knebworth, playing most of the first LP (so I have been told I was not there!).

February 27, 2008 at 11:29 amAnd chas and daves pub on newington green had previously been the pub where john lydon was famously slashed.Or so I was told
luggy
February 27, 2008 at 1:25 pmSquatted that pub for a while. Was previously The Pegasus, Johnny got slashed in the car park. I know the Pistols & The Clash recorded at Wessex Studios next to the alleyway between Petherton Rd & Highbury New Park. It was the 2nd closest pub to there.

February 27, 2008 at 5:29 pmIt was you who told me to start with, you old lugger, you, when I was living on the road at the back of there…leconfield?….with luke, james, aaron and whacker.Sniper was a regular, and filthy frank who claimed to be richard jobsons big brother.Had my 17th birthday there and ian stuart and his skrewdrivers came and complained to me that there was a monkey in the front room. Not knowing who they were and far too chemically assisted to care,I demanded to shown this prodigy…..exit stage left to front room where luke is pointed out,I very seriously tried to explain that that was luke, not a monkey at all,not realising the racial aspect of the issue (I told you I was out of it). This explaination was not helped by luke hooting like a baboon and leaping up the walls.Oh dear, another misunderstanding,I have always seemed to be bedevilled by them.

right, didnt even realise it was a squatted place, remember going upstairs though to be met by this amazing deep thud of bass.a mate from manchester spent nearly the whole time through Shakas set pogoing like a mad man and shouting out his love for Shaka between any lull in the sound.
had never heard fatman before, would be cool if you have any of his stuff to upload.
i had some Shaka nights on tape but was searching for them the other day and couldnt find em.saw Shaka band a few times but nothing compared to his sound system, that mad siren still gets me,dunno how he got that sound, maybe some mad homemade delay unit?

I was thinking of the Sp*rs lyric. I’ll never listen to toyan again!
Seriously though his How The West Was Won LP is one of the greatest LP’s ever. Top cover too. You should post some sound tapes though, the better quality ones are amazing documents.. no need to worry about copyright issues with them either.

January 24, 2009 at 8:43 pmTalking about Tottenham was U.Brown not also a Spurs fan? I know he released that tune “Tottenham Rock” but how much it had to do with the mighty Spurs I’m not sure. I know that Lord Sassafrass had a tune on his Horseman Connection album called “Hot Spurs on the ball” which definitely was. It makes me wonder if Prince Jammy was Spurs also as he produced all the “Tottenham” tracks mentioned here & he was Fatman’s main contributor on his Hotspur Hi-Fi sound system.
Bob Marley is said to have supported Spurs because of his admiration of Ossie Ardiles.
DJ Junior Rodigan is a Tottenham fan too, I know that for sure.
