Badges

Whilst having a sort out I found these badges. Thought they may be of some interest.

The top row in ‘badges1’ are from the Free State of Frestonia, the guitar pick belonged to Johnny Thunders and the CNT one I got from Catalonia in 1980. Both images are in the photo gallery, in the Badge collections sub album.

The Pack one may well be luggys.

Hi Penguin. Sorry to be a pain in the arse, could you scan a high res pic of the Southern Death Cult indian dancer. The one on the photo page is blurry when enlarged. If possible can you send it to my email. I will print a T-Shirt for your good self with the design, if you want one that is let me know your size. Thanks a million keep up the great work, brilliant site. Trunt

I remember a kid at school’s dad had one of those badge making machines – but the badges weren’t the little 1″ sized ones, they were about 2 and a half inches across.

He bought in a load of the blank circles for us to make our own designs, and I wrote “Nancy Spungen Is A Pincushion OK?” on mine (twat that I was).

Got me sent home from school after the art teacher got the reference and sent me to the headmaster. Rest of day off for the price of a letter to my mum. Nice!

    Good to hear that, Kev…
Vinyl on Demand are a great label (the John Duncan, P16.D4 and Broken Flag sets are very nice), so I’m sure we can expect a nice quality release…

(By the way – if you go to the posts above, and click on the link in blue text on Simon’s post, you will see a WBE badge 🙂 )

I’ve reproduced the “Hardened Cynical Bastard”, “Child of 1984″, Romantic Idealist” and “Autonomous Proletarian” badges (reversed, white on black) but have it on good authority (better badges website) that there were 4 more. Does anyone know what they were or even better have a good quality copy of one or more? I’ve purchased a 1″ badge machine and with the help of photoshop am in the process of reproducing some of the badges that used to be about from ’77 onwards.

The PiL logo made a good badge. As did the 999 logo.

I had a load of different Joy Division and Mekons ones too. I wasn’t a big Mekons fan at first (didn’t like ‘Work all Week’ much) but the badges were nice.

There was a basement shop in Monmouth Street in London’s west end where you could take along any design you’d drawn and someone would turn it into a badge for you on the spot.

Further to my post above, does anyone know the whereabouts of “Dodgy Brian” that Better Badges say designed these? I had a few leads but they came to nothing.

pete, i wouldn’t mind a set of those. I also remember there was a set of Toxic Grafitty badges around at the time (one being a red and black 1″ one of the cover) and a series featuring couplets from the Poison Girls’ “Persons Unknown”

But regarding the originals of the one you list. I got them in what – as i recall – was a very large two (or even three) floor record shop in Glasgow (NOT “Listen”). Bobby Bluebell used to work there. Anyway, there was a sort of punk clothes shop which sold copies of Seditionaries stuff and Acme Attractions clobber. that’s where i got the badges. Though i DO remember they were all featured in a collage in this sort of Westwood/Maclaren/Bow Wow Wow ‘Sun Sea & piracy’ mag that was free. This would have been around the time Six Minute ‘More Short Songs’ came out as i remember buying the badges on the same day as that single. 🙂

Will try to hunt out a load of my old badges sometime soon and scan them. unfortunately, have lost many of my favourites – all the above for a start!

Yeah, I lost a load of my old badges – either through moving from squat to squat in the 80’s or when my mum lost her council flat in Rayners Lane, Harrow. Loads of my stuff got thrown out including a Crass “Bloody Revolutions” cheese cloth shirt (I know, I was a confused 14 year old!) that I got from “Fans” on the Holloway Road. And no one to this day believes that they existed!

Oh yeah! I’m ready to produce the set of badges but I wanted to try and get permission first. If anybody has a contact for the person who designed these I’d appreciate it…. I noticed a black & red “KYPP” one in the photos above with the same design, anyone here who can shed light on this?

haha, one of my mates had one of them!! The design was black with a kind of purple ‘off print’ to it, if i remember correctly. In fact, should be easy enough to ‘prove’ they existed as fans would always have an ad in the back of Sounds, and I should imagine some of the issues of ‘Punk Lives’ magazine scanned elsewhere on this site. 🙂

At last, someone else who has seen one! Mine had a green “off print”. They probably came in a variety of colours…. I’ll have a look for the Fans ads. Cheers for the tip!

Pete, the black and red KYPP badge came about thus. Joly at Better Badges wanted us to produce a badge design, badgered us you could say (ha ha).

The obvious choice was the girl and the scissors graphic, but it didn’t work reduced down to badge size.

We liked the ‘Autonomous Proletarian’ series of badges, so I got hold of a sheet of those images from Joly and set to work. I tippexed out the wording and with a felt pen wrote ‘kill your pet puppy’ then took it back to Joly saying here is our badge, can we have it red on a black background please?

Joly saw the funny side of it (maybe the marketing potential of it) and agreed that that would be the KYPP badge.

We had no contact with the originator of the design.

Ok, thanks for that Tony. I think I might just do them anyway and get sued/slagged for being a capitalist money grabbing bastard and then retire on the £3.00 profits! 🙂
