D.I.R.T. – Master Race / Celebrate Hate / H.O.R.S. / Hiroshima / Unite Don’t Fight
Better view of this flyer here
Crass – Shaved Women / Darling / Berketex Bribe / Columbus / Birth Control / Nagasaki Nightmare
Crass – Nagasaki Nightmare / Pretty Pills / Bata Motel / 1980 Bore / We’ve Got A Bomb
Same lineup that toured together around the U.K throughout the whole of 1982, with the exception of Annie Anxiety (on my tape – not the show). I caught all these acts at Welwyn Garden City Ludwick Hall a little earlier on in the year. Not sure how many times Crass performed at this venue in Birmingham, sure Nic will let me know via comments…Sounds like it was a decent enough night though (no pleads of ‘Stop Fighting’ from the stage!), if anyone was there feel free to let me know of any memories via the comments.
I have to admit that Nagasaki Nightmare is only half the song as I accidently recorded over some of it…What a wally… Also apologies for the cut up of the Crass set. Still it is still worthy of a listen, and a pogo around your room as it is pretty crisp, crisp as in a mixing desk recording!
Check the site for other Flux / D.I.R.T. / Crass posts…a few more posts by these bands already uploaded.

March 16, 2008 at 11:47 pmMicky, i’ve got a recording of that gig too which I thought i’d given it to you. isn’t Annie Anxiety’s set on there? Would really love to hear some of her sets again. In fact on the occassions i saw her, supporting Crass, i always remember being amazed by how powerfully she came across whilst all around me were dough-balls shouting ‘fuck off’.

March 16, 2008 at 11:52 pmNah Chris, these tapes (three of them) are one’s I own. No Annie on them though. If you find your tape I will get it off you and add it to this post. Incidently I have all your tapes safe and sound and would like to get them back to you before the egg hatches…within a couple of weeks that means! Ring me in the week.

March 17, 2008 at 10:30 amCrass played at Digbeth Civic Hall 7 times: twice in 1980, twice in 1981, once in 1982, once in 1983 and once in 1984…
I went to all of those dates: the first time I saw them was the February 1980 concert…
I still have a ticket and poster for this somewhere – I’ll look them up for a scan…
They also played Birmingham before – in 1979 at the Co-Op Festival Suite but I missed that one…
The early concerts were organised by people affiliated to the 021 Birmingham Anarchist group and the Peace Centre…
My memories of the concerts at Digbeth seem to be considerably different to other people’s: for example, I don’t really remember any aggro, although others do…
They were great concerts though: very inspiring, particularly for the way the evening was a ‘multi-media’ extravaganza which seemed to make it something special beyiond the usual rock ‘n’ roll concert…

March 17, 2008 at 11:44 ami managed to see crass, flux of pink indians(doing the fucking cunts treat us like pricks set)d+v,this might have been the last time crass and others played, not sure of the year?only aggro(if you can call it that) i witnessed was when maybe a dozen skinheads ran into the main hall sometime into the crass set, less than 5 minutes later all the skinheads were chased back out and didnt return, looked quite comical really.
maybe people were starting to fight back by then rather than take the pacifist stance and watch folk get the shit beaten out of them?

May 29, 2008 at 12:15 pmWell this certainly brings back some memories, Digbeth Civic Hall was the Conway Hall of Birmingham and some of the best gigs ever were held there CRASS, Flux of Pink Indians and of course Rubella Ballet. This is one of the best gigs I did with Flux and luckily where I didn’t have to play for Rubella Ballet on the same night which did happen quite a lot seeing as I played drums for both bands at the same time. Check out myspace.com/rubellaballet to see a picture of me (Sid) at this gig with a full on crusty look before it really took off.

I remember that gig well, I’m sure it was in May 1983, probably the 5th of May, I was only 15 yrs of age at the time and was pocessed by Crass, followed their ethics to a ‘T’.
If I’ve got the date wrong, D & V played on that day, along with the usual others, Crass, Flux (doing their new set you mentioned) Annie Anxiety and D&V… if anyone has a recording of that gig, or even a photo of the ticket or flyer for that gig, I’d love to hear from you…
One of the lads that was with us young ‘uns at that gig – Mick, from Wellingborough Northants (lost contact now) was held by knife-point by a Skinhead in the toilets at the Digbeth…for 50p.
Also, the Skinheads that turned up you metioned, you may remember some of them sneaked upstairs to the balconies, and dived off into the crowd…

August 25, 2008 at 6:33 pmUpdate for john; the Digbeth Civic Hall gig where D&V played was 4th May 1984, not 1983 as I mentioned above…just found the info on an awesome Crass forum on the Southern.com site…has listings of every gig Crass ever performed at, as far as Crass ‘spotters’ memories go and then some, very interesting, highly recommended…
