Assassins Of Hope – Centro Iberico, Westbourne Park, London W11 – 14/09/82

Adesso Nienti / Prisoner Of Law / Nothing On Me / Victims / Spastic Disco / Fearful Darkness / Shades Of Grey / Nuremburg Revisited / Conditioned Lives / Cartoon War / Dickie Davies / Kiss Your Arse Goodbye / Battle Of The Boyne

Another tape that is very old so only plays on one speaker. Honestly it is not my equipment, that all works fine, just seem to be getting to some weirdly recorded ones at the moment. Ahh eureka – this tape is the same make as the Black Flag / Apostles one. Actually this tape I believe begun life at Andy Martins place all those years ago and he recorded it and sent it to Chris Low, who lent the tape to me. I would not be surprised if Andy recorded them from a mono player through a lead to another mono player. No one I knew had those double tape ‘Ghetto Blasters’ in those days , in the punk scene anyway! The B-Boys and Rastas had them…

Anyway technical stuff aside, here is a recording of Assassins Of Hope in the summer of 1982. An OK quality audience tape, would be better coming out of two speakers! The set list is exactly the same as the track listing on the released demo somewhere else on this site, which is odd. Picture above of Andy Martin recording with the Assassins Of Hope by Chris Low.

gabe, i’m sure Micky is right as i know for a fact that Andy DID often use to use two mono tape recorders connected with a jack lead to copy tapes.
the results being garbage, though as he would have taped over the original copy often these mono duplicates are the only ones left.

    Hi

I’m Pete I was lead (male – as there were also two female vocalists Jo and Chantelle) vocalist with the Assassins. We recorded the original tape on a mono tape recorder at Alan Gordon Rehearsal Studions in Leyton just before New Year’s Eve in 1981 hence the crap sound (although many would say our sound was always crap which, I guess, was part of our appeal). If any of my former Assassins colleagues read this I would love to get in touch with you so please contact me via this website.

There’s some more info on the other A.O.H. post on this here site about the whereabouts of members of the band, if that helps…

I have a few pages on A.O.H. from fanzines ‘back then’ (including one I did): I’ll see about getting them scanned in at some point…

Any copies of Protest knocking around, Pete, that you could scan for the site?

Excellent to hear from you, as I recall we used to share a room in the famous Petherton Road squat. Really good times, glad to hear that you are still around too. What are you up to these days?

Do you remember the time A.O.H did that gig at Skunks that you and Mitch (of Flack fame) bravely attended (you may recall we had to leg it all the way back to Highbury).

    Nic

Please can you direct me to the other A.O.H post on here as I can’t find it. Would love to know the whereabouts of the other band members.

Which fanzine did you do? I would love to see the articles that you have on A.O.H.

No copies of Protest unfortunately (I am impressed that you remember it) but if anyone out there has any copies I would be interested in copying them.

    Best regards to you both.

    Hi Pete,

I remember that Skunks AOH show well, though I don’t know if it was bravery or just the stupid bravado of youth that made me and Mitch insist on going. I used to run into Mitch in New York when he was touring with various band and we used to laugh about that night amongst other things. I live in Los Angeles now and acording to Nic I produce ‘hairy bollocked Rockery’ music for a living. Anyway it’s great to hear that almost everyone is still around and I wonder how many others from those days are lurking around considering posting?

and there’s also a version of ‘Systems Slave’ lurking here as well…

    No escape on the ‘net…

I bumped into nuzz the other day and have seen the Primal Choas posting on his blog. It was Nuzz who directed me to the KYPP site.

I’m impressed that you remember Primal Choas and AOH and even more so Protest Fanzine.

Did you say that you did a fanzine? Which one?

I guess we knew each other back then but the ol’ memory is not what it was can you remind me?

What are you up to these days?

We didn’t know each other, Pete: I met you a couple of times at gigs in London (at the Centro), but I wouldn’t expect you to remember that!
    🙂
I was interested in all the manifestations of Punk back then: being a schoolkid (in 1982), I had a lot of time on my hands to send off for tapes and fanzines which is why I remember Primal Chaos / AOH, etc…
(I had an AOH t-shirt from Ivan – maybe the only one in the Midlands! hehehe)…
    🙂

I changed the name of my fanzine each issue so it went through a few permutations…I suppose that the main ‘thing’ I did was start the band Napalm Death…

I think I remember you. Didn’t you go for a beer before an AOH gig with Ivan, Leon and I in the pub just down the road from the Centro Iberico once? If I remember rightly you were talking about a band called Bible of Sins at the time.

Its good to be back in touch with you. Got any Napalm Death on MP3 at all?

    Chris

Ian Slaughter is a top guy, next time you see him give him my best regards. What’s he up to these days?

    Hey Brian

Good to hear from you, what are you up to these days? I remember that night out in Stevenage in 1984 well. That was the night that Neil (aka Ivan Oxo, Assassins of Hope guitarist) quit being a veggie after consuming sausage and chips after downing a copius quantity of alcohol. Didn’t you used to hang out at the flat in Chingford too?

Pete, I lived in Leytonstone and was a 15/16 year old punk at the time. Was at Allan Gordon a couple of times when you tried recording the demo along with Deaffy, Dan and Tarquin and various other people who turned up to piss you all off during the course of the day!!! 🙂

Was at that Skunkx back in ’82 as well as hanging out in Wapping/Centro Iberico at that time too.

    Seems like a lifetime ago.:-)

By the way I think I first bumped into Mike & Leon at the Flux of Pink Indians gig in Leytonstone back in September ’81. What a mad night that was getting up on that ‘stage’ and screaming along to ‘Tube Disasters’ into the mic and eventually falling into the drum kit! I’d just turned 15 then too!
