The Iconoclast – Flipside Records – 1985

In These Times

Prisoners Of Existance / Battlefields / Things Of Beauty

Decent release on Flipside Records, this band had a certain APF brigade quality about it, ‘In These Times’ especially owing more than a nod to The Omega Tribe and Null And Void. Reagan Youth from New York were the big ‘Peace Punks’ in the U.S. until there singer went to the commune in the sky. Christ On Parade came close, and of course Crucifix.

The Iconoclast were slightly less known but still worth a listen. They also appeared on the massive PEACE compilation on RRadical Records, double LP and a huge great magazine like insert chucked in for good measure…a bargain at about $5

This EP marked a slight change of direction by the band (which developed throughout 1984 and was demonstrated on their 1984 demo) when they became more ‘Peace Punk’ orientated in their sound…
Initially they were a full-on Discharge clone (as ‘Battlefields’ demonstrates) – and were certainly one of the first bands to be so in America (lagging behind the Scandinavian thrashers who had always been doing it)…
But – good stuff (despite the mid-1980’s over-reliance on the Chorus effect 😉 )…

The footage of the band on the ‘Flipside Video Fanzine’ is great: the drummer does a brilliant 2 handed cymbal crash which we used to laugh at every time we saw it…

The P.E.A.C.E. compilation was a pretty important record thinking back on it…

and Reagan Youth – what a total septic doss! “Where you going tonight boy? I ain’t going fuckin’ nowhere!”

    It’s a Birmingham thing…
You flouncers from the Roman Shell wouldn’t understand…
    😉

    However…
Doss = local colloquialism meaning good / fun / great…

Septic = local colloquialism used in a similar manner to the way in which the young people may use the word ‘Bad’ to mean ‘Good’…ie “What a septic blastbeat” or “Put on the first Larm LP – it’s totally septic”…
However (aned confusingly) it can also be used to mean something that is awful…ie “You septic Fraggle” or “Check out your shirt – septic”…

So “total septic doss” would mean “a really exciting and enjoyable thing”…

    🙂

Great post. A testamony to the variety of what we all called punk or hardcore back then. I got this and played the hell out of it when it first came out. As far as the peace comp, I can’t think of a better comp ever put out. It really served to show us all the worldwide thing that was going on back then in it’s purest form. You have to love the fact that it had the so called big names along with others you never heard of before. I probably bought 10 to 20 records because of bands on that comp. Thanx a septic ton for this post.
