PS Chris – did you ever get hold of the ‘Kilt by Death’ 3 x CDr bootleg of Scottish Punk / Post Punk / Indie?
If you didn’t, I have it all as MP3s…

I’ve also got that single by The Partizans (Birmingham)…

WErnER: I’ve still got my copy of The Ankle File but as luck would have it a fine fellow called Kenny just sent me a copy he has transferred to CD which i’ll be happy to send you a copy of. Listening to it the now. That Vertical Smiles track “The New Clash Single” is amazing. saw them at one of the first gigs I ever went to which was basically what could be only described as a Stirling Punk Festival with The Fakes, Vertical Smiles and others whose names escape me playing ontop of a building at Stirling Uni. early 1979 I believe. Those French Girls are on it too who I saw supporting The Skids, again at Stirling Uni. Good times!!

Thanks for the kind words Chris…I was the vocalist in VS (can’t in all fairness use the word singer…).

Life now being what it is, I gave a copy of the Mestthetics CD which features New Clash Single to Mick Jones recently; luckily he just laughed…

Aha! Mr Hagen! Would love to hear this CD if it features a recording of new clash single. not to mention any other stuff VS may have recorded. please contact me via penguin who runs this site.

Think a Fakes rehearsal plus a stirling area comp tape I put out in 81 or so should still be up on this site too, should you fancy taking a further trip down memory lane.

    Hope you’re well.

Hey Chris I just googled my old band The Screaming Babies from Edinburgh, do you really have us on tape ? I would love to hear it as I never had anything like that. But I do have some happy memories of supporting The Exploited and blurred memories of of many many great bands at clouds. Friday nights and avoiding the mental livi punks, happy days….

Hi guys Do you have, or know where I can get a copy of
FIRE EXIT 10 wee smashers or Zips live at Burns Howf
    let me explain. . .

I’m writing a semi fictional book blending my own experiences of punk over a 20 year period with scene reports from all over the UK that usually get written out of the Pistols/Clash/Ramones & no-one else rubbish.

(I’m no writer I’ve only ever done my zine & pieces for the excellent Erics book which was my local scene back in 77) & I also have to fit this around doing the house up to sell before we emigrate to Australia in Sept & working full time nights as a nurse! but things are coming along well.

Although based around a real gig from the time, like I said it’s a fictional story based around memories of some mates who were involved in the Glasgow punk scene at the time ie
GerryAttrick/JockStrap/ViciousRiff/Bill Provoked/Jon Zips mixed with my own lively experiences scallying in Glasgow with Everton at both Celtic & Rangers in later years
I’ve knocked together a draft of a story involving my two fanzine sellers meeting up with the Glasgow punks before jumping on a Coach from Bruce’s to a gig the Jolt did over in Falkirk at Mannequins on 1st December 1977.

My problem as ever is in trying to describe the sound of the early Glasgow punk bands.
I’ve got boots of Johnny & Abusers/ Jolt/ Zone/ Valves/ but could really do with help describing the real punk bands. . .
Do you have, or know where I can get a copy of
FIRE EXIT 10 wee smashers or Zips live at Burns Howf (both bands were forming dec 1977)
    or
fanzine reviews or memories of seeing early sets by FIRE EXIT/ZIPS/
    XS DISCHARGE/INDICATORS/EXILE/
Local zines I’m still trying to track down include . . .It ticked & exploded/Kingdom Come/Jungleland/Trash/Torn to threads/Chickenshit

So if you were in the A.P.G. or were a stanklifter, or have any info on any of the above, or were around the scene please get in touch, I’d love to hear your story.
I’d especially love to talk to

You may also find this interesting, from Peter McDougall’s ‘Just a boys game’ film. the band playing in the pub when there is the fight are, I believe, The Cuban heels: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zAX6QNUA7w

Caught Jimmy Saville’s Wheelchair I think twice – with Sedition here in Aberdeen. Bassist Calum would later join Oi Polloi for a time, before moving across the pond and joining forces with Death Mold, A.P.P.L.E., and most recently Final Conflict and Phobia.

Tried Google, nothing! Even put out a request on Edinburgh Freecycle in vain hope, this is almost becoming an obsession!!
Don’t suppose, is there anybody out there…..

No thread about Scottish punk would be complete without some mention of Aberdeen’s finest Toxik Ephex, and who despite a split in ’91, are still kicking it to this day… and a nicer buncha folks you could not hope to meet. CD retrospective “Punk As Two Fucks” available through Topplers Recs. http://www.topplers.net/ … and for those who may not have come across Toxik, folks can check ’em out here: http://www.myspace.com/toxikephex

Enjoyed The Last Supper Edinburgh liquid rooms Sat….loads of Paisley in attendance…maybe Steve should play Paisley next round?

Spoke to a drummer who squatted London at the time and who played with GOD TOLD ME TO DO IT, but didn’t get to find out if he had any tapes (I think he was responsible for exposing Paisley to The Mob/The Apostles!)

Getting closer to finding a copy of Glass Shells and Cars, but I wondered as Andy has featured so prominently here If you would post HAVE 2, Dave and others band?

Hi guys, I’m a new poster but with a personal interest in Scottish punk and post punk. I was wondering of anyone (particularly Chris Low) could help me out with some info – I’m trying to track down the titles of records apparently released by two bands from the Stirling area, the Hollow Men and Curious Reign. Any one know anything about them?

Are the Hollow Men the group who relesed a single ‘Future’ in 1981? Did Curious Reign actually release a single and was it before or after the ANKLE file tape? Many thanks for any light that can be shed on things.

@Stephen: Apologies for late reply but i’ve been out of the country and haven’t been able to post on this site.

I think I saw Curious Reign somewhere in Stirling, but really can’t remember much about them. have a feeling they were a bit like early Ultravox/Simple Minds and the other thing I remember for some reason is that one of them may have had a Kevin Keegan perm and ‘tache. Great help, eh? I never knew they released a single and am a wee bit surprised as i’m sure i’d have grabbed a copy if they had.

The Hollow Men i am pretty sure did release a single (with, a old western , Colt style revolver on it) as I remember being very surprised to see on (i think) the cover that they lived at the end of my family’s street, Henderson Rd in Bridge of Allan. I remember walking along there to make contact with them so I could write about them in my zine but there was no answer and no response to the note I left. So they remain as enigmatic as their name.

Sorry I cannot shed any further light on either band. Perhaps if Billy McChord pops up again he may be able to help out.

Incidentally, Jamzy Fake McEgg, if you’re here I unearthed the tape recording of that New Youth practice you took me along to – and jolly good it is too!
