February 14, 2008 at 9:56 pmThere is a 1/4 inch tape from 1978 recorded at Southern Studios by John Loder, which I have held in my hands, John Lydon producing Killing Joke on some instumental. Never got released. Would love to hear that…it is still there at the studios to this day!

February 14, 2008 at 11:16 pmwow, something we would all(?) love to hear, couldnt you bribe them or get them extremely drunk so they might hand it over for you to make a copy? dont suppose you have this killing joke live bootleg album with honey bane singing with them in your vaults?
article i have says there were only 200 people present at the gig. although i dont know the size of londons ‘the venue’
another connection though all the same.

February 15, 2008 at 1:10 amI went to ‘The Venue’ in Victoria a few times. If that was where they played then I guess it held about 500. Maybe it was a different ‘Venue’. I will ring up Sue Loder at some point to at least get a photo of this 1/4 inch tape and the box / label with all the details on, last time I saw it was in JL office on the floor gathering dust about a year ago. Getting a tape of a 1/4 inch will need access to the Studio itself to play it back on, and an engineer like Harvey Birrel who is still there every now and again to do it. It will also need to be baked before it is played as the tape is so old otherwise it will just fall apart while playing it. I will not hold my breath…Think the tape was was recorded before PIL kicked off.

It was quite a large place – could hold maybe 600 people.

May 5, 2010 at 10:03 amIt was my studio session, I wrote a song called dead dollies, and sometimes used Killing Joke to perform it with because they helped me with the backing track! I was living at J Lydon’s house at the time. I introduced Youth from KJ to J Lydon and J wanted to come down and produce the song. Youth was there to play bass for me, and we never actually finished the song. Instead we all got pretty smashed, jammed a bunch and recorded our jammin! KJ, were my backing band for Dead Dollies, and one other song I wrote that we performed at the BBC for a club scene in a BBC Drama called Treatment in 1982.

May 6, 2010 at 5:36 pmRecall there being some talk of an Honey Bane retrospective CD. Anyone have any news? Honey?
Honey Bane
May 8, 2010 at 1:42 amIt’s recorded! Along with a lyrically updated version of Violence Grows!
I don’t have a release date yet, but when I do, I will let you know.
I will be touring with it too.

May 8, 2010 at 1:57 pmThe KJ / Honey Bane gig (mentioned in the first post) at the Venue is available in full on KJ’s ‘Bootleg Vinyl Archive Vol.1’ which also contains ‘Live in London’, ‘Live at Odeon’ (Bologna) and ‘Porchester Hall 1988′.
What’s the Matter?’ is interesting only because this is the only version available – the sound is not good, and the song’s a bit throwaway to be honest.
Still, I expect you can find it to download without much trouble…

May 8, 2010 at 11:39 pmWould that Southern Studios session on the 1/4 inch tape be worth getting hold of Honey B? The original tape will need to be baked so it is playable again I should think, but with J Lydon on the knobs and members of Killing Joke jamming it might well be a coup for it to see the light of day again. Shame you never made the final cut with any vocals.
Been speaking to Adam and other Malicious Damage operatives recently for one of my more recent posts about the early days of Killing Joke.
See the post here, a damn fine read:

Your name was mentioned a few times around the time I was getting the work done on the post above, specifically concerning the gig at The Venue which got a bit messy after the show (as in, rock n roll messy) with Youth as the main rocker and roller by all accounts.
By another weird twist of fate, I still see Vince AKA Vomit (ex of DIRT, Rubella Ballet and now Earth Culture) who told me you are (or were) related to him by marriage. He may well have been pulling my chain though, dunno!
I would love to stick up the Donna and Kebabs 7″ up on this site, but I promised Penny Rimbauld that I would not upload any studio released Crass bands or record label product onto it.
He was happy to let me upload Crass practise tapes and radio interviews etc, and The Mobs release for Mark Mobs birthday.
If I could organise it that Penny is ok with uploaded the record, would you care to write a few paragraphs about how the release came about and what the recording experiance was like? And any other relevant information?
Similar I guess to the Mob one I uploaded recently.

If you wish not to participate then that is of course no problem, if you do wish to help out at all, just say the word on a comment here and I will then private mail you about the post and what we can do with it.
Nice one.
BTW, I remember buying that Turn Me On double 7″ (still got it) that you have that TOTP footage on (I saw that show at the time as well).
In those days, 7″ singles sold stack loads eh?

May 9, 2010 at 1:22 amIt did have vox! Loder refused to let anyone at it. After he passed, Penny from Crass tried to procure it, with my permission.
However, it was nowhere to be found!
And maybe some things are not meant to be found, but meant to stay personal to all those who were involved in creating it!
I was married to Fox for 3.5 years, he died at 22 just after our daughters 1st birthday. So yes! He was my brother in law.
Fox would have been 46 end of this month.
Our daughter turned 1 on June 26th 85, Fox died July 12th 85.

May 9, 2010 at 9:33 amShame I did not pick that tape off Johns floor and place it somewhere better suited when I had the chance to a few years back.
I spoke to Harvey Birrell about it after my comment was placed on this site. He knows of the tape and said he would look for it, but I have not bothered to chase it up since.
There has been a lot of chaotic activity at Southern since Johns sad passing, so perhaps it is just misplaced rather than lost for good. Hope so, I will check with Harvey again and see if it turns up.
I had a feeling it was Fox, just did not want to be specific in case it was not! Very sad story for you and your daughter. I hope to see Vince at some point soon.
