Still buzzing (vibe-wise not chemicals) from the weekend’s Subway Sect performance round the back of The Plough pub in Walthamstow, London E17. I was inspired,\u00a0by Vic Goddard’s incredibly pleasant\u00a0demeanour on the night, to chuck these gems up from 1978, the only two singles released in the lifetime of this\u00a0band from 1976 to 1978.<\/p>\n
Subway Sect were early Sex Pistol’s followers and performed with that band, and The Clash, \u00a0on many occasions, the gig at The Roundhouse (above), and the 100 Club Punk Weekend Festival, would\u00a0have had Penguin giving\u00a0over several shiny pennies to attend those two gigs, alas I was too young, but I will soak up any memories via the comments if you were at those gigs. Tony Puppy? Michelle Brigandage?<\/p>\n
The first\u00a0single was released on Bernie Rhodes record label, Braik. Strangely the sleeve has the word Tottenham on it, which is a place close to my heart (and close to\u00a0my abode as it goes). Not quite sure of the relevance of that, anyway…<\/p>\n
The second single on the Rough Trade imprint is the pick of the bunch, unfortunately Bernie Rhodes, the manager sacked the whole band while\u00a0the sessions for the LP (and these tracks for the single) were being recorded. Bad move…LP never saw the light of day\u00a0in the lifetime of the band, but this classic single remains. Vic Goddard got a second Subway Sect together in the 1980’s but the band had slightly lost their punch by that time.<\/p>\n
The other night though, in May 2008, Vic Goddard gave 100% to a very appreciative audience including several KYPP’ers…If they appear in your town, then go and support him and the band.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
