On this day in 1966 a child was born, kicking and screaming, but generally loveable.\u00a0Me to be precise. The photo above shows me with my best buddy at the time, a \u00a0cuddly Panda, who got dribbled over, pee\u2019d on\u00a0and tugged at\u00a0a fair amount during\u00a0my infant years.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
My\u00a0Panda chum survives to this day, 42 years later,\u00a0although slightly more threadbare nowadays.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Also surviving are the wonderful groundbreaking LP\u2019s (some shown above with my Panda) that were released throughout 1966 and made a massive impact, influencing\u00a0what we would all listen to in the following years, even four decades on. It must be stressed that I did not actually purchase these LP\u2019s in the year of my birth, or even the year after!\u00a0<\/p>\n
Unfortunately the biggest selling LP for 1966 was none of the above classics, but a soppy soundtrack LP entitled \u2018The Sound Of Music\u2019. The film version, that the soundtrack was taken from, also won Best Picture in that years Academy Awards ceremony. The film \u2018Blow Up\u2019 won The Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival, and was also nominated\u00a0at that years\u00a0Academy Awards but did not win anything\u2026<\/p>\n
The Star Trek TV series\u00a0blasted\u00a0off in 1966\u00a0with an episode entitled \u2018The Man Trap\u2019.\u00a0Softly Softly\u00a0(a spin off from Z Cars) and Dr Who also begun broadcasting in this year.<\/p>\n
On the week I was born, Tom Jones\u2019s \u2018Green Green Grass Of Home\u2019 single was number one in the UK charts, Donovan\u2019s \u2018Sunshine Superman\u2019 was in second place I think\u2026<\/p>\n
In world news Harold Wilson regained his Prime Minister status in the UK general election, and in China the Communist Party\u00a0leader\u00a0Chairman Mao\u2019s \u2018Cultural Revolution\u2019 started in ernest via the boots, guns and swords of The Red Guard.\u00a0One of the main focuses of the Cultural Revolution was the abolishment of old customs, old culture, old habits, and old ideas, so suffice to say a fair bit of state sponsored vandalism also took place amongst the violence unleased on the public. Walt Disney died two days after I was born\u2026<\/p>\n

In sporting circles, football fans\u00a0were continuing to celebrate the England\u00a0football team winning the World Cup for the first, and only time so far, back in July.<\/p>\n
Turning over Uruguay, Mexico and France in the group\u00a0stages, Argentina and Portugal\u00a0in the quarter and semi finals, then thumping West Germany 4-2\u00a0in the final at Wembley in front of \u2018er Maj, makes 1966 a total doss year to be born.<\/p>\n
