Vex – Fight Back Records 1983

Sanctuary / It’s No Crime

World In Action / Relative Sadness

First release on Fight Back Records, a record label run by Conflict. Heaps of UK Decay and a slight pinch of Killing Joke are among the ingredients for creating Vex. Serve loud.

This is the only release I believe that was released by the band.

All good stuff but sounds slightly dated now and the lyric “dream of spunk, dream of blood” cracks me up every-time. Photo by Mark Palmer ex Conflict roadie.

I have always liked this release a lot — and even their “The ain” demo — and was wondering if you knew of a way, snail mail or email, to get in touch with any of these members?

I was able to track down some folks from the Outer Himalayan band S-haters, who included Nick Blinko of Rudi Peni in their lineup at one point unbeknownst to many RP fans, and interviewed them at my site here:

    http://www.cultpunk.com/?p=183

Vex, S-Haters, Rudi Peni, Part 1, Amebix, The Deformed, all faves of mine, all kinda treading that dark underside of anarcho punk, it seems like to me. Also, Killing Joke are a huge fave of mine.

if you can help out, thanks so much. You can email me the info, of course!

    Thank you,

    -Oliver

Scrote (the singer) was last heard of living in the US, selling american Indian new age bollocks to idiots.

My girlfriend knows his girlfriend, so I’ll see what I can do about getting an address.

    Don’t hold your breath though…

I’d be interested to hear the demo – the 12″ doesn’t do justice to Scrote’s singing voice. It sounds like he’s got a cold compared to the live gigs I saw.

I used to see them a lot around the local Woolwich/ Plumstead/ SE London gig scene.

This was an excellent release. Weirdly I shared a house with a load of fellow punks in Brougham Road Wallasey on the Wirral and this record was always a favourite of the inhabitants. I always found it quite amusing that we would receive stuff in the post from 96 Brouogham Road in Hackney. Some years later I becam good friends with a lad called Gary Byers who used to live in Brougham Road Hackney. SOme pretty funny things go on. Not that this post has anything to do with this particular release.

Terrific sounds. Had only previously heard It’s No Crime as featured on Mortarhate comp. Who? What? Why? When? Where?, so it’s a real pleasure to hear these songs for the first time and as they appeared on this release.
Regarding Scrote’s whereabouts and what he’s been doing since? Discovered the following info on http://www.lastfm: Singer Richard Zsigo (known at that time as Scrote) went on to form the band Triumvirate, then travelled for a few years between Glastonbury (UK) and Sedona (U.S. Arizona) performing Celtic folk tales and known as Yanu, a name he uses to this day. Living near Glastonbury, his current project is a blues two-piece called HollowBone.

its strange having this EP, i know nothing of the band, where they were from, or there names but remains a favourite, should have been massive, or perhaps that was not the point.

I’m looking for a clean copy of this record (and the demo tape) to use as a master for a vinyl reissue. It’s a legit reissue with permission from the band and licensed. The only problem being no one knows where the actual masters are. Any help would be much obliged. Please contact me at caleb AT sacredbonesrecords.com
