Various – Twisted Nervous Breakdown cassette – 1982

Side One

Side Two

I believe this cassette from Spikey Low’s collection had something to do with the similar named fanzine Twisted Nerve, which I believe was Nic’s handywork. The same Nic that comments on this site on a regular basis. Hoping Nic will come to my rescue and give me some background on this release so I can cut and paste it up here, including the artists involved.

Thanks to Nic for the text below:

The compilation – ‘Twisted Nervous Breakdown’ – was put together by Miles (aka Rat) who was my next-door neighbour and co-founder of Napalm Death (for whom he was drummer and co-songwriter from 1981 to 1985)…
The compilation was the second tape compilation he had made (the first being ‘Ruptured Gut’ featuring Psycho Faction, APF Brigade and Napalm Death among others) on his Twisted Tapes label. It was released in 1982 and featured a black-and-white Gestetner-duplicated cover and information sheet (which I think I may still have somewhere)…

The tracklisting is:

Side 1
Krondstadt Uprising – Divide and Rule
The Bog Brushes – Lies
Bible of Sins – Tradition
The Apostles – Skin Deep
? – ?
Hagar the Womb – ?
Curfew – Malvern Hall
Distraught A.K.A Political Asylum – Trust In Me
Verbal Warning – World Wars
Krondstadt Uprising – Animal Liberation
The Apostles – ? (Instrumental – is it ‘The Silence’?)

Side 2
Curfew – Blues for Fin
The Bog Brushes – Shampoo
Verbal Warning – Wrong Image
Hagar the Womb – ?
Bible of Sins – Bible of Sins
Distraught A.K.A Political Asylum – Carnage
Hagar the Womb – Cardboard Theatre
Bible of Sins – Victims of War
Verbal Warning – What’s Your Label?
The Apostles – A Rebel without a Conscience
? – ? (Is this Krondstadt Uprising?)
Napalm Death – The Good Book
Regarding the bands:

Krondstadt Uprising were a Southend band with links to The Sinyx. They appeared on Crass’ ‘Bullshit Detector – Volume 2′ compilation and had a single released on Flux of Pink Indians’ Spiderleg records in 1983…The singer (Spencer) also ran the Necrology fanzine (printed by Graham of New Crimes) and tape-label…A retrospective CD is available…

The Bog Brushes are a band I don’t really remember much about. I think they were a 2-piece, perhaps from Hampshire or Berkshire…

Bible of Sins were from Atherstone in Warwickshire, and were comprised of 4 miners who had the Discharge leather-studs-and-spikes look down to a tee…They only really existed for about a year in 1982, recording 2 demos and playing concerts locally with people like the Varukers, Antisect (who were playing their 3rd ever concert)…They also organised the first 2 concerts for Napalm Death…One of their songs on the tape is from their first demo, and the other 2 are from a live recording that we made of the band at an afternoon concert in a pub in Atherstone in mid-1982…I liked them a lot as they usually one had one riff per song…

The Apostles are infamous around these parts, so I’ll leave it at that…apart from noting that ‘A Rebel without a Conscience’ features vocals by Katherine Holmes (who was Flump in Flump and the Fruitbats and made a feminist-informed fanzine in 1982…(was she also in Jesus and the Fruit Aphids?)…

3rd Party were from Cumbria and were part of the thriving early 1980’s scene which Trunt mentioned in a post on another thread and which was documented on a compilation tape featuring a number of the bands. Miles got in touch with them because he had seen them play live (with the Notsensibles and Distortion) when he was on holiday in 1981 in Cumbria…

Hagar the Womb probably don’t need any introduction here, so I won’t say anything…

Curfew were local band (from Knowle, near Birmingham) who played a few local gigs, made a couple of recordings on a 2-track recorder, and did little else. They featured Fin (bass) who went on to play in Napalm Death (between 1983 and 1984) and then to play with Miles in Witchhunt in 1987 (who were the closest carbon of The Mob that I ever heard)…The song ‘Malvern Hall’ is about a local school…

Verbal Warning (originally known as the Dead Presleys) came from Nottingham where they had a reputation for making sarcastic and insulting remarks to Punks and ‘Anarchists’ at concerts which gave them a less-than-savoury reputation. The singer – Dayve – was very supportive of Napalm Death in the early stages: he featured the band in his fanzine The Dawning of a New Error (which he edited with Dig – who went on to start the Earache Record label), and organised a couple of concerts for the band in Nottingham. Both bands played together in London at the Recession Klub in Hackney in October 1983 at a concert with The Apostles…The band reformed a few years ago (without Dayve) and continue to gig and record…A recording of their live performance at a gig they had organised for Conflict is available elsewhere on this site…The songs here are from the bands 1st demo, along with a live cut…

Autumn Poison (originally known as Enola Death who featured on the ‘New Criminals’ compilation tape posted elsewhere on this site) came from Southend and featured Graham (aka Jah Ovjam) who edited the New Crimes fanzine…They recorded a couple of cassettes during their existence and played a number of concerts, mainly in Southend, with bands like Krondstadt Uprising, the Boiled Eggs and Fallout (ex – Six Minute War)…

Napalm Death were the band that Miles and I started together in December 1981 after we had messed around making bedroom recordings of our songs on cassette since 1980…The track on this compilation is from the 2nd demo from August 1982 (featuring the 3rd line-up of the group) recorded live directly to a 2-track recorder…I was 14 years old then, the rest of the band were 15…
Twisted Nerve was Miles’ fanzine (named after the Scottish Post Punk band who probably took their name from the Boulting Brothers’ 1969 film featuring Hywel Bennett and a Bernard Herrmann soundtrack)…
Miles and I had started co-editing a fanzine together in 1980, and then branched out into doing our own: Miles made 5 issues of Twisted Nerve while I made 5 issues, each of which had a different name…
As you can see from the cover, there’s a lot of connections with Puppy-ish things…
The fanzine also features cover art by Pushead who later went on to fame with his designs for skateboards, Thrasher magazine, The Exploited and Metallica…

Holy Kazzoo! Some Verbal Warning I haven’t heard of before 10 + 14.
(isn’t that some Hagar The Womb as well?)
Track 5 and 12 sounds like something Apostles related. And I know I suppose to know that 9th song with the Black Flag Riff…

I’m working on it, cool tape that I wasn’t aware of until now!

If anyone want these files as separate songs, let me know and I
put them up somewhere… (just chopped this one up), working on the tracklist later… Have spent too much hours in the woods today…

    Cheers / Henk

Nic, the 8th track on side one and the 6th track on side 2 are by the first incarnation of Political Asylum; seminal ‘DIS’ band, Distraught. “trust In Me” (with the Black Flag ‘six pack’ bassline rip-off’ and “carnage”.) Think these tracks were recorded at our first ever gig at Braco Town Hall in early 1982.

NB: Those cadaverous skeleton/zombies on the cover of Twisted Nerve should have mohicans. ALL cadaverous skeleton/zombies should have mohicans. This law was decreed in 1982 so Miles has no excuse for such a flagrant oversight.

By the way, the Edinburgh band of the same name were great. Sort of an early Psychedelic Furs sound. Think I saw them with either the Exploited or The Threats at the night club and got a copy of their single off them, which I still have. they also had a track on an Edinburgh comp 7″ called ‘Mint sauce For The Masses’ which unfortunately I flogged on Ebay years back.

the track on mint sauce for the masses was called ‘vertigo’. three other bands were on the single, it had a large green fold out sleeve. i still play vertigo, great song. it’s kicking around on file sharing sites like soulseek if you want to track it down.

Just a small correction – Necrology fanzine was put together by Steve Pegrum, drummer, prime mover and shaker of Kronstadt Uprising, not Spencer Blake, cheers Graham

PS In full agreement with Chris about the lack of mohicans on the skelingtons, its a disgrace! Furthermore there is no mushroom cloud in the background, as I think was also made obligatory under the Anarcho-punk Fanzine Graphics/Record Sleeves Act of 1982.

My apologies, Chris – I should have guessed it was Distraught…Is the solo on ‘Trust in Me’ a homage to the theme music for the motor racing?
And I meant Pegrum (not Blake), Graham – soz…

There are 2 tracks by Twisted Nerve on the ‘Mint Sauce…’ ep…I always liked ‘When I’m Alone’ from their Peel session ep…I never heard the full-length LP – anybody have it? Any good?
Do you remember the ‘Backlash’ ep on the same label?

Listen you lot: the fanzine cover has got a graveyard, it’s got revenants wearing Cuban Heels, it’s got big knives – it’s even got an axe…and all you can do is bemoan the lack of mohicans and mushroom clouds (as required under the Anarcho-punk Fanzine Graphics/Record Sleeves Act 1982)…You people- never bloody satisfied…

I listened to the flexi, Henk, but couldn’t place it. The content of the voice samples makes me think it was probably produced in Britain around the late 80’s / early 90’s…
They sold it you as the Crass flexi? The swines…As Master Jimmy Pursey once said “It’s just a fake, make no mistake: a rip-off for you, a Rolls for them”…

    We are, as they say, ‘Old Skool’ Nic…the mohican is very important to us. Sets us apart from the ‘straights’. Cos mohicans look different, well they don’t if everyone has them, but we can colour them different colours anyway to look individual, like with normal hair really…but it’s a punk look. That’s important innit? Where’s me glue? What’s that cloud over there in the East? Looks like a mushr….{BANG followed by a strong burning wind and silence}

Has Chris got any handkerchiefs in his attic that he used as bumflaps?

I don’t know if they did it, but at this year’s Wickerman Festival up here, an attempt at a Guiness World Record for most Mohicans was made.

Gary Numan was headlining act – and very good he was too according to AL junior and Elizabeth who went.

I think he’s kept the signed pictures of Wattie, Penguin: couldn’t bear to be parted from them…

I had a look for news of the record attempt…The only thing I could find was a brief mention on the website of “Andy Depp – The U.K.s Top Johnny Depp Tribute” where it seemed to suggest that it had failed…
Apparently the world record stands at 63: you get more than that at a Conflict gig, so it would seem like the people at Wicker Man weren’t even trying…
    😉

Any idea what the collective term for a group of mohicans is?
    A gaggle of mohicans?
    A shrewness?
    A volary?
    A flutter?

Interesting how so many of my internet searches for that rare little something that I ‘almost’ randomly end up looking for…ends here at KYPP. Can’t tell you how great that is, but I’ll try…”that’s great”! Read somewhere that Nic was toying with the idea of releasing the first four Napalm Death demos on vinyl. Would love it if that rumour became fact. Anyway…thanx as always for sharing your love of music.

Thanks a lot for uploading the compilation tape. This one’s including the oldest available work of NAPALM DEATH, definitely. By the way, I’m still looking for the early demo stuff of them. So it would be great, if Nic wouldn’t just “toy” with the idea to publish those early attempts. Go for it, mate! 😉
If there’s anybody out, who’s able to discover the old stuff in its basement, I would be curious about it! Just drop me a line: stoffel@yacoepsae.de

Just to add the Bog Brushes were from Edinburgh and was John Green and another friend whose name escapes me. John Reen wasa also the pen behind the Ivor The Anarchist comoc strips that first appeared in Deek of Oi Polloi’s “Skinhead Havoc” zine and was always a top lad and a good laugh. I hope he’s well whatever he’s up to.

@ Stoffel: I’ve got load of early ND recordings , many a lot earlier than the tracks on that comp (in fact probably everything they put out before Hatred Surge and turning thrash… all the demos, plus practice recordings and first few live tapes ; also the letters, flyers, posters etc that accompanied them) Hopefully sometime in the none too distant future Nic will pay a visit to That London City and we can get them properly catalogued.

@ Chris! A couple of years ago, in order to guard against misunderstandings, Nic posted a huge and detailed list of the very early works of NAPALM DEATH on the Profane Existence-messageboard, eventually because there was a fake-version of “Punk is a rotting corpse” circulating in the net. Would be great to get the possibility to listen to the real stuff, finally. Personally, I got in touch with NAPALM DEATH’s tunes for the first time back in ’86 or ’87, when I used to trade tapes. Got a muffled live-recording from somewhere else and I went nuts, immediately. Anyway, I just want to mention, that I always prefered the pre-“Scum” period, because the band was more impassioned and hasty than nowadays, in my opinion.
Well, here’s the list, done by Nic:

    Various Artists – ‘Chapter 3’ compilation tape (2 songs)…
(Rehearsal recordings – May 1982. The songs were ‘Punk is a Rotting Corpse’ and ‘The Jamboree’. Released by Jako of ‘The Joy of Propaganda’ fanzine – he was also a member of various bands from Telford such as the Orinj and Yella Curtin Raylz. This line-up featured Si O on guitar and Robbo on bass, Rat on drums and Nik on vocals)

Various Artists – ‘Ruptured Gut’ compilation tape (2 songs)…
(Rehearsal recordings – May 1982. Released on Rat’s ‘Twisted Tapes’ tape label. The compilation also featured people such as APF Brigade, Bible of Sins, Autumn Poison and Verbal Warning. This line-up featured Si O on guitar and Robbo on bass, Rat and Nik)

    ‘Halloween’ demo 1 – 1982 (9 songs)…
(2-Track tape recordings – September 1982. Released as a C30 tape by ourselves. The tape featured songs like ‘Rival Factions’, ‘Punk is a Rotting Corpse’, ‘Pollution’ and ‘Napalm’. This line-up featured Daz F on guitar and Robbo on bass, Rat and Nik)

‘And, Like Sheep, We Have Gone Astray’ demo 2 – 1982 (15 songs)…
(2-Track tape recordings – October 1982. Released as a C40 tape on ‘Obituary Tapes’ cassette label run by Mick Slaughter of ‘Obituary’ fanzine. The tape featured songs like ‘Punk is a Rotting Corpse’, ‘Traditional Society’, ‘Pollution’, ‘Rival Factions’, ‘Call This Aborted?’, ‘Confined’, ‘The Room with the Shuttered Window’ and ‘The Doomsday Cometh’. This line-up featured Daz F on guitar and Robbo on bass, Rat and Nik)

Various Artists – ‘Twisted Nervous Breakdown’ compilation tape (1 song)…
(2-Track tape recording – 1982. Released on Rat’s ‘Twisted Tapes’ tape label. The compilation also featured people such as 3rd Party and Psycho Faction. This line-up featured Daz F on guitar and Robbo on bass, Rat and Nik)

Various Artists – ‘Subversive Elements’ compilation tape (2 songs)…
(2-Track tape recording – 1982. Released on ‘Social Disorder’ tape label. The compilation also featured The System, The Sinyx, Subhumans, Cold War, APF Brigade, Organised Chaos, Psycho Faction, The A-Heads and The Xpozez. This line-up featured Daz F on guitar and Robbo on bass, Rat and Nik)

    ‘Kak’ demo 3 – 1/4/83 (10 songs)…
(2-Track recordings – April 1983. Released as a C60 by ourselves. The songs are ‘Curfew’, ‘The Good Book’, ‘The Glue Bag Song’, ‘Traditional Society’, ‘The Crucifixion of Possessions’ (longer version than on the ‘Bullshit Detector 3’ compilation LP on Crass Records), ‘Punk is a Rotting Corpse’, ‘Blame’, ‘(K)rappers Delight’, ‘What is My Country?’ and ‘The Doomsday Cometh’. This line-up featured Robbo on guitar and Fin on bass, Rat and Nik)

‘Live at the Union Rowing Club, Nottingham 9/4/83’ tape…
(A live mixing desk recording of a gig we played with The Subhumans, Antisect, Amebix, Disorder and Chaos UK. Released on ‘New Error Tapes’ cassette label run by Dig Pearson of ‘Dawning of a New Error’ fanzine – and later of ‘Earache’ Records. This line-up featured Robbo on guitar and Fin on bass, Rat and Nik and Spike (from Political Asylum and The Apostles) guested on vocals in parts)

    ‘Unpopular Yawns of Middle Class Warfare’ demo 4 – 5/83 (6 songs)…
(2-Track recordings – May 1983. Released as a C60 by ourselves. The demo includes ‘Systems Scapegoat’, ‘Blame’, ‘Screaming Pain Pt 2’ and ‘Fin’s Song’, ‘The Crucifixion of Possessions’ and ‘Caught in a Dream’ (original version). This line-up featured Robbo on guitar and Fin on bass, Rat and Nik)

‘The Rise and Fall of Flared Trousers’ tape…
(A C60 compilation of songs from demos 3 and 4. Released by ourselves in 1983. This line-up featured Robbo on guitar and Fin on bass, Rat and Nik)

    ‘Scared Shitless’ tape (11 songs)…
(A compilation featuring 11 songs from demos 3 and 4 and a live side. Released by ourselves in 1983. This line-up featured Robbo on guitar and Fin on bass, Rat and Nik)

Various Artists – ‘Bullshit Detector 3’ compilation double album – 1984 (1 song)
(2-Track recording – 1983. The album features a shorter version of ‘The Crucifixion of Possessions’ from demo 3 as Crass edited out the beginning due to running time issues. Crass originally chose ‘The Good Book’ as the album track but the band objected due to internal discussion regarding the lyrical content. This line-up featured Robbo on guitar and Fin on bass, Rat and Nik)

There was also a pre-Napalm Death release by Rat and I:
Undead Hatred – ‘The Crap Doesn’t Stop Here’ tape – March 1981…
(This line-up featured Rat on drums, Daz F on bass and Nik on guitar and vocals, and also played a gig in April 1981 in Coventry)

I would be really encouraged to get some of that stuff in any form. And no, I’m not a stupid collector nerd. I’m just very interested, because the band meant a lot to me within the middle/ end of the 80’s and it has been always impossible (last but not least until today) to get anything of them from that special era (exception: “The crucifixion of possessions” and “The good book”).

    Cheers from Hamburg/ German

@ Stoffel: Yes. I have all of those ND recordings listed above. Plus a load of others. Sure one is a live recording of a gig played with Bible of Sins which Miles sent me the next day (some place called Atherstall if I remember correctly??) , another very early cassette full of practice songs with a photocopied sleeve featuring a snake with a nuclear missile in it’s mouth and the photobooth pics of Miles & Nic (that I think also appeared in Anti-Social? I’d really have to dig through the box and pull everything out. Plus sometimes Miles would stick at the end of some other band’s tape early attempts of “new songs” recorded at a recent practice.

Really looking forward to seeing you again Nic. Please do come down and we’ll make a weekend of it (+ no doubt indulge thee most anally retentive early ’80s anarcho-punk deconstructions ever slurred over a pint) 🙂

    Hey, Chris!
I suppose, I should take part of the special weekend. Did Nic an appointment with you? 😉

NB. Just to add that the unidentified Apostles instrumental on this comp was called “For Yoko Ono” (tho may have been entitled ‘Pakistan by 12 Wickets’ or something else on this tape. It appeared to have a different name on each comp it turned up on.

@ Stoffel: yet to hear from Nic. Will let you know when it happens.
