  1. Samantha, from the first Flowers In The Dustbin line-up (vocalist on ‘Memorial’ on a BBP comp tape Composed Bananas) is the pink mohawk at 2.31

Frances, longterm partner (now ex) of Chas from FITD with the black mohawk at 1.48

No KYPP connections I’m aware of though.

  2. Isn’t that Illyane/ Elaine Rubens at 1.31/2 – standing behind the main character? And wasn’t she in Hagar the Womb and a frequent visitor to Puppy Mansions? [Checked – yes she was in Hagar the Womb…and was a frequent visitor to Puppy Mansions. If it is Elaine in the video. Which it does look like.]

I am sure when the vid first came out I recognised more of ‘the strange young women’ in it, esp. the final march past. But that was a long time ago… If it is Elaine/ Hagar in the video, possibly other Hagars there? Ah but when was it made?
Ah ha – single released 1982, so there could have been other Hagars there.

  3. Yeah i remember Elaine being in the video. She later went on to star in Animal Hospital and graced our tv every week for a while..

  4. The video has been removed from youtube, so the link is gone…
It’s still available to view here:

I sort-of gave up on The Stranglers around the time of ‘The Raven’ so I missed this song first time around…
but it sounds pretty good: very melancholy feel…
(I love their early work: amazing combination of approaches)

And there is some great hair in that video!

  5. The main girl is Spanish Lisa. She frequented Westbere Road Puppy Mansions for awhile, around the time of Jo Brocklehurst. Strangely Jo never got her down on paper.

Lisa told me that one of the Stranglers told her they had a copy of the ‘real’ Necrominicon. I can’t remember which one it was supposed to be.

That was the Puppy connection Mark probably remembers being told about.

Though Elaine Hagar is in the later part of the video as well, and she eventually moved into Westbere Road.

I’ve put a pic of Spanish Lisa in the gallery, in the Westbere Road album.

  6. I thought she was so cute when this video came out and was played on TOTP…and now there is a photo to cherish aaahhhh…!
Is that not Mouse at 1.41 with a head band on?

  7. Mouse!

Frankly my dear, I doubt it.

I recognise about 37% of the punks in the hair cutting scenes onwards as people I’d chat with at gigs, snog maybe ; )

The girl Spanish Lisa ‘meets’, god I remember her so well but not her name. She’s the one who cuts Lisa’s hair. She was at every gig I was at for awhile. I may never have known her name, just chatted.

There’s another girl I remember very well from the Music Machine days, on the extreme right as they come round a corner -she’s got huge hair.

My guess is all the punks were recruited from some gig a few nights before, we await Elaine to tell us what gig that might have been.

  8. I’m the devil’s advocate.

    Good to hear from you…

The conundrum is solved – but we can carry on as long as we want.

  9. I always thought I’d seen an ad in the back of sounds or nme asking for punk girls to appear in the video.
No idea if that memory is real or whether I made it all up in my acid soaked brain.

  10. Is that an advert you dreamed up in your mind? ‘Pavlik needs punk girls!’

    ; )

Interestingly there was an idea from the Puppy Collective to put a fake ad in Punk Lives from ‘a skin girl’ looking for skins as pen pals – “please send photo with your letter”.

We were then going to publish these pics and letters in KYPP!

It never happened, but it still makes me laugh to this day imagining if we’d done it. Putting the ad in, comedy – publishing in KYPP, insanity.

  11. The girl in leopardskin with blonde mohican was Zoff. Apparently she was supposed to be the leader of the girl gang. They did the weirdy close up of her cos she had not long got funky coloured contact lenses. I didn’t know Spanish Lisa so this must have been after I moved to NN Rd – plus Elaine R wasn’t this mohicanned til she left home!

As to how the punks were assembled – there were often rumours of punks being wanted for various videos and etc – and I remember fairly regularly being approached by researchers at gigs etc to appear in stuff – thats how we got involved in the filming for Breaking Glass. A memorable one was being approached in Bristol by the makers of ‘Shoestring’ suggesting I meet them in a secluded underpass at midnight… yeah right!

  12. Breaking Glass at the Rainbow… a tenner at the end of the day and all the wedding-buffet type food you could eat. Halcyon Daze!

Mind you, there was nothing wrong with my eyesight until I spent a day in that crowd when Hazel O’Connor had the clingfilm outfit on and they shone that laser “tunnel” out into the audience. Now I’ve got glasses like Guinness bottles! I feel a visit to Claims Direct coming on ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. jahpork: are you visible “Breaking Glass”? i’ve got it on video.

Think another member of The Heretics knew Danny Wright, who you who you see walking across the screen in a ‘Vive Le Rock’ shirt in the opening concert scene.

  14. Nah, don’t think I was there in any other capacity than background filler, sadly. These days, I would have been replaced with a CGI punk!

We’ve got it on vid as well: I’ll have a look out for the Vive t-shirt later on.

  15. I was in band with one of the girls in this vid. I’m surprised Gerard has commented. Frank (or Francis) was long time girl friend of Chas (Flowers in the Dustbin) bass player. She has a black mohican in this video. (yup, that’ll narrow it down a bit then)
The band I played bass for was “The Cuckoo Club” Frank was the singer
(I would beg to differ) Interesting songs though : -)
    Steve

  16. Hey Chas!!!
Is that really you? How are you? Where are you even?
Some one told me you’d moved back to London, any truth in it?
    Steve

  17. Hopefully. Fine/married/kid on the way/playing some music again. westmonster (work) not v punk. A great deal (south norwood)

How are you steve, good to hear from you – are you in London?

  18. Bloody hell – great photos Simon and good to hear from you. Thank christ someone captured Dave’s tin hat for posterity.I’m really going to have to have a proper look at these at home rather than work….

Apologies, this isn’t really the place to ask but “Billy (RIP)” – ? Sorry to hear that.

  19. Hi Steve. Not sure if I was before you. I was in the band around 1990. Line up: Chas:guitar, Frank:vocals, violin, Ben:drums, Me:bass. I’ve dug out some old flyers – mainly anti-poll tax benefits. Venues: The Robey,Chat’s Palace,The Lady Owen, Crown & Castle, Amersham Arms,The Factory. Other bands on bills: The AK47s, Waveband,Destroy the boy,The 4 big men,Mouth Almighty, Blur (not that blur, i don’t think), the Keatons, Idiot Strength and Love Eggs. Interesting times! When did you join?
    Cheers
    Matt

  20. My mind’s a big fuzzy blur right now (and most other times too) but I’m thinking perhaps you were my predecessor.
I was in Blyth Power up until 1990 and I have a feeling we (Idiot Strength) might have played with the Cuckoo Club at the Lady Owen Arms and with Mouth Almighty somewhere on Goswell Road. Chas? Help us out here
    Steve

  21. matt was after you steve, your predecessor was some kid called tony and it was that Blur, the guitarist from mouth almighty went on to play in a couple of brit pop bands (elastica?) too. The Lady Owen Arms was on goswell road- is demolished now but around 89-90 this guy called Paul Ronan (i think) put loads of bands on there and the Cricketers, Oval. He looked and behaved like a pirate and told me ‘your singers got a great pair of lungs and a great pair of tits to go with them’ – classy. We did loads of anti poll tax benefits – it would have been cheaper to pay the fucking thing!

To return to the stranglers video – i’ll ask Frank how she got recruited to do it, that might shed some light on the original question.

  22. I asked Frank how come she was in this video and they recruited people at gigs for the price of a free haircut – she was tapped up at a Damned gig she thinks, by a posh woman with a bodyguard to make sure the nasty punks didn’t spit on her.

  23. Val – you were there when the spanish girl came to Westbere rd Im quite sure of that: I was going to take her to see Jo B, but then she disappeared (the spanish girl) as quickly as she had appeared.

On the subject of Jo Brocklehurst, does anyone know where you can get any of the postcards?

  24. bit of a derail, but i picked up a video of an old film i’d only ever seen before in the early ’80s called “THE MUSIC MACHINE”. It is essentially Saturday Night Fever, but set in Camden, and despite a certain “Ohh, look how it’s all changed…” and kitch value it is an utterly woeful movie.

  25. Hey, yes it was me and Ruth from Hagar. We got paid a tenner each and the main girl got ยฃ100 as she agreed to have her head shaved; the rest of us wimped out.

We were also fed and spent a merry ten minutes pelting buns at a Sun photographer who ran and hid in a phone box. Whilst we continued to bombard him with bread products.

My main memory – was of a group of us running up and down and shouting Jean Jacques at the top of our voices in cod French accents. We were very young and it made us laugh till we all got sore sides and hiccups.

  26. Hi Elaine, just checked and I said that you were in the video back in February. Nice to think my memory is not quite gone yet. ( I will be 50 v. v. soon and my kids are looking for early signs of senility. Callum is convinced people die when they get that old)

  27. Hi Alistair

Hope you have a wonderful birthday. Scarey that all this stuff that we are talking about was over a quarter of a century ago! Well my knees and back can certainly contest to that. So many lifetimes and experiences have happened since but it is really good to know that between all of us we can pull together the memories.

    Keep well.

    E

  28. Hi Elaine,

Great to see you posting on here and it’s funny the things we remember clear as day, for some reason I remember you being really excited because you and Jane had just been to Habitat and bought a garlic press. Not sure why I remember that exactly, but it may be because a quarter of a century later I finally know what one is and why they are cool.

    xx

    John

  29. Superb video saw for the first time in 20 years today.
few names remembered from the postings here.
Gerard, “Flowers In The Dustbin”, Ruth “Hagar The Womb”

  30. I was in this video, i was approached up the kings road and asked if i wanted to be in a video, they said they were looking for 50 mohican girls, i took my mate Diane (last known living in Milton Keynes) with me and her boyfriend Paul (Pink spikey hair), you can just see him looking over the shoulder of the girl with the ‘rock’ t shirt at 1:30 he didnt even have a mohican let alone the fact he was a bloke! but they must have been short of female extra’s as he is in the video, as is my mate, who is cutting the girls hair at 1:36. You can see them both stood together at 2:10. I got too bored with the whole thing, too many people pushing to get up the front, so you dont see me anywhere in the video…but good times all the same…

  31. Thanks Debbie. After they approached you did you film it then or did you have to go somewhere to film it?

  32. No didnt film it right away. Presuming they must have given me contact details or a location, unfortunately it was so long ago now i cant remember any details of where it was filmed, other than it was somewhere in London sorry…

  33. There was Cambridge Circus location for the band, so maybe the rest was filmed nearby? Anyone who was in it remember?

I knew a studio engineer called Aggi from Stoke Newington who maintained his sister was in this vid. I assumed this was the lead girl – but it could’ve been any of them!

  34. Lisa used to hang out at the Queen Vic in Ealing. I met her at a club in Ladbroke Grove and introduced her to the many bands and musicians that inhabited that watering hole. She used to hang out with a girl called Maggi – (who was a bit strange herself).

The filming was around King’s cross and bottom end of Totenham ct road ( as i remember her telling me).

Don’t know what ever happened to Lisa except that she was in love with Whotty in the Exploited( i was in a band with his bro) and seemed to vanish one summer’s evening…Shame….

  35. Greetings, i know this doesn’t identify anyone per se but i’m sure the girl with the pink hair, ‘vive le rock’ shirt and kilt standing in the background during the head shaving scene 1:29 -1:43 was also interviewed in the UK/DK punk/skinhead film……the interview looked like a randon stop in the street type.

    Stranglers video here:
