Stranglers – Strange Little Girl Video 1982 – KYPP connection?

Any Puppies out there know who the punks are towards the end of this video are at all?

Mark Wilson from Da Mob remembers the extras to be something to do with KYPP, but can not remember the names or many details. Help the guy out…Tony, Lugs, anyone?

Comment if you recognise anyone please…

Samantha, from the first Flowers In The Dustbin line-up (vocalist on ‘Memorial’ on a BBP comp tape Composed Bananas) is the pink mohawk at 2.31

Frances, longterm partner (now ex) of Chas from FITD with the black mohawk at 1.48

No KYPP connections I’m aware of though.

Isn’t that Illyane/ Elaine Rubens at 1.31/2 – standing behind the main character? And wasn’t she in Hagar the Womb and a frequent visitor to Puppy Mansions? [Checked – yes she was in Hagar the Womb…and was a frequent visitor to Puppy Mansions. If it is Elaine in the video. Which it does look like.]

I am sure when the vid first came out I recognised more of ‘the strange young women’ in it, esp. the final march past. But that was a long time ago… If it is Elaine/ Hagar in the video, possibly other Hagars there? Ah but when was it made?
Ah ha – single released 1982, so there could have been other Hagars there.

The video has been removed from youtube, so the link is gone…
It’s still available to view here:

I sort-of gave up on The Stranglers around the time of ‘The Raven’ so I missed this song first time around…
but it sounds pretty good: very melancholy feel…
(I love their early work: amazing combination of approaches)

And there is some great hair in that video!
    🙂

The main girl is Spanish Lisa. She frequented Westbere Road Puppy Mansions for awhile, around the time of Jo Brocklehurst. Strangely Jo never got her down on paper.

Lisa told me that one of the Stranglers told her they had a copy of the ‘real’ Necrominicon. I can’t remember which one it was supposed to be.

That was the Puppy connection Mark probably remembers being told about.

Though Elaine Hagar is in the later part of the video as well, and she eventually moved into Westbere Road.

I’ve put a pic of Spanish Lisa in the gallery, in the Westbere Road album.

    Mouse!

Frankly my dear, I doubt it.

I recognise about 37% of the punks in the hair cutting scenes onwards as people I’d chat with at gigs, snog maybe ; )

The girl Spanish Lisa ‘meets’, god I remember her so well but not her name. She’s the one who cuts Lisa’s hair. She was at every gig I was at for awhile. I may never have known her name, just chatted.

There’s another girl I remember very well from the Music Machine days, on the extreme right as they come round a corner -she’s got huge hair.

My guess is all the punks were recruited from some gig a few nights before, we await Elaine to tell us what gig that might have been.

I am sure that is not Mouse at 1.41, but does not look very Coryish either.

    I’m the devil’s advocate.

    Good to hear from you…

The conundrum is solved – but we can carry on as long as we want.

I always thought I’d seen an ad in the back of sounds or nme asking for punk girls to appear in the video.
No idea if that memory is real or whether I made it all up in my acid soaked brain.

Is that an advert you dreamed up in your mind? ‘Pavlik needs punk girls!’

    ; )

Interestingly there was an idea from the Puppy Collective to put a fake ad in Punk Lives from ‘a skin girl’ looking for skins as pen pals – “please send photo with your letter”.

We were then going to publish these pics and letters in KYPP!

It never happened, but it still makes me laugh to this day imagining if we’d done it. Putting the ad in, comedy – publishing in KYPP, insanity.

‘Pavlik needs more punk girls’ was a dream I used to have almost every night as a 13 year old Tony 🙂

The girl in leopardskin with blonde mohican was Zoff. Apparently she was supposed to be the leader of the girl gang. They did the weirdy close up of her cos she had not long got funky coloured contact lenses. I didn’t know Spanish Lisa so this must have been after I moved to NN Rd – plus Elaine R wasn’t this mohicanned til she left home!

As to how the punks were assembled – there were often rumours of punks being wanted for various videos and etc – and I remember fairly regularly being approached by researchers at gigs etc to appear in stuff – thats how we got involved in the filming for Breaking Glass. A memorable one was being approached in Bristol by the makers of ‘Shoestring’ suggesting I meet them in a secluded underpass at midnight… yeah right!

Breaking Glass at the Rainbow… a tenner at the end of the day and all the wedding-buffet type food you could eat. Halcyon Daze!

Mind you, there was nothing wrong with my eyesight until I spent a day in that crowd when Hazel O’Connor had the clingfilm outfit on and they shone that laser “tunnel” out into the audience. Now I’ve got glasses like Guinness bottles! I feel a visit to Claims Direct coming on 🙂

jahpork: are you visible “Breaking Glass”? i’ve got it on video.

Think another member of The Heretics knew Danny Wright, who you who you see walking across the screen in a ‘Vive Le Rock’ shirt in the opening concert scene.

Nah, don’t think I was there in any other capacity than background filler, sadly. These days, I would have been replaced with a CGI punk!

We’ve got it on vid as well: I’ll have a look out for the Vive t-shirt later on.

I was in band with one of the girls in this vid. I’m surprised Gerard has commented. Frank (or Francis) was long time girl friend of Chas (Flowers in the Dustbin) bass player. She has a black mohican in this video. (yup, that’ll narrow it down a bit then)
The band I played bass for was “The Cuckoo Club” Frank was the singer
(I would beg to differ) Interesting songs though : -)

Hi Steve. Not sure if I was before you. I was in the band around 1990. Line up: Chas:guitar, Frank:vocals, violin, Ben:drums, Me:bass. I’ve dug out some old flyers – mainly anti-poll tax benefits. Venues: The Robey,Chat’s Palace,The Lady Owen, Crown & Castle, Amersham Arms,The Factory. Other bands on bills: The AK47s, Waveband,Destroy the boy,The 4 big men,Mouth Almighty, Blur (not that blur, i don’t think), the Keatons, Idiot Strength and Love Eggs. Interesting times! When did you join?
    Cheers

My mind’s a big fuzzy blur right now (and most other times too) but I’m thinking perhaps you were my predecessor.
I was in Blyth Power up until 1990 and I have a feeling we (Idiot Strength) might have played with the Cuckoo Club at the Lady Owen Arms and with Mouth Almighty somewhere on Goswell Road. Chas? Help us out here

Shall we start a “Cuckoo Club etc” thread? We seem to have veered off-topic.
