Sons Of Bad Breath – Wood Green Art Centre, London, N22 – 1985

Sons Of Bad Breath performance

Pretty good recording of Monty and his Sons Of Bad Breath thrashers giving it all the effort they could muster on the night.

Part of the infamous Hackney Hell Crew. Pretty rough bunch of heavy drinking and heavy speeding squatters that formed an axis of bands such as Blower, Eat Shit, God Told Me To Do It and of course Sons Of Bad Breath.

Amongst the Hell Crew were Monty, Ollie, Pus, Simo, Martin, Animal, Napoleon, Sean, Bully, Alien and Scruff from Gateshead.

Some of the Hell Crew did not survive passed the 1980′s, the ones that did hopefully are well enough. I was very pleased to see Ollie in Bristol in the early 1990′s at a Gunshot (UK Hip Hop) performance (on a boat in the docks that is actually a club). Ollie was well Nike’d up and looking well, in some tracksuit clobber. Very much a change from when I had last saw him, while on one of my regular visits to 108 Brougham Road to see Andy Martin and Dave Fanning. At that time in the mid 1980′s, a whole bunch of the Hell Crew were camped out at this house including both Pus and Simo, two that did not make it through to the next decade.

Thanks to Clint for sending this tape in, and thanks to Mike from Decadent Few for recording it for Clint in the first place.

Haven’t heard ‘Alfie Noakes’ for a long time…

  2. johng Says:

had not heard any sons of bad breath for years so ta for this.first met monty around 84 when he came up to manchester for a conflict gig and put the lot of them up for the night afterwards.
ended up moving down to that london and living with him and other scottish folk in a house behind the packington estate in islington.monty seemed to know london like the back of his hand and would take me on walks all over the capital lasting all day sometimes.he’d spent sometime in the army so i guess he was used to all that marching, the speed also helped.
havent seen him for years, last time being at an all day gig in notts when bagpipes was still a pup.
oh yeah,he was once a roadie for the 80′s band ‘joeboxers’.
    a top bloke,hope yer well.

  3. Monti Says:

Gally, Gally, Gally, how the fuck are you? I`m alright, still bobbin and weavin. I live in Bristol now, still go to gigs(had a great time at Rebellion) and still havent learned to behave yet. Bagpipes lived until he was nearly 13(and a bit of a local legend), got a English Bull called Fred now. I hope yer feet recovered from all that walkin. Recently me `n Martin done a interview for next Ian Glasper book(out this year) and I did Int/vw for “Negative Reaction” zine no.11, only interviews I`ve ever done without coppers present. Glad to hear your ok. Adios, Monti………..To get a copy of “Negative Reaction”no.11 contact trevhagl@hotmail.com zine also features 4 Skins and Oi Polloi and much more. I aint heard Alfie Noakes for ages either but he`ll always have a place in my heart.

  4. johng Says:

hi monti,i’m well, been living back in manchester for last few years after living here there and everywhere.sean from eat shit mentioned on another post on this site you were down in bristol ,hells angel?
good to hear your alive and well, good to hear this old tape as well.
will try and check out the interviews you mentioned.
wasnt someone planning on releasing a sons of bad breath lp?
great to hear from you after all these years fella

  5. Monti Says:

Sons of badbreath going to be part of a Hackney compilation album on Dutch label Wicked Witch, it should be released before the end of the year. On vinyl it`s` a double album and we`ve got a side. (Does that make sense??) I aint listened to tape yet in fact I dont think I`ve heard any SoBB stuff since 1987/8. Good to see poster at top of the page tho, Jeezus!! that annoyed a fair few people. I used to have all the gig posters but they`ve all vanished over the years so if anyone got one and can send me a copy it`d be much appreciated. Take care, Monti

  6. slyme68 Says:

Unbeleivable! i couldn’t really believe it the time, really, either…! i was giving this a listen last night and my 21 year old step son came into the room and said “are these guys just really out of their heads?” pretty much, says i, “i just heard that guy say ‘i don’t really know where i am’” he said. i’d missed that. hilarious. monti, martin, really glad to hear you’re still around.

i got a one sided single of Eat Shit off ebay a little while ago with a great bit of writing about Victoria Park road in it. i’ve often wanted to post it through the door so the people there now can learn a little of the history of their house… i wonder of they’d like that?

  7. Monti Says:

i think they`d probably want to move if they knew what went on in that house. If you read the SoBB chapter in the next Ian Glasper (Burning Britain…The Day the Country Died) book you`ll see what I mean. Martin, Alien, Olly and me are still in touch with each other. SoBB was started for fun, for us and everyone at the gigs and I think we acheived that, dont you? Fuckin crazy times tho.

  8. Jay Vee Says:

I remember Eat Shit in 19AT5 at the Demolition Ballroom in Bristol, supposed to be a Disorder gig, I was playing bass for Skum Dribbzzz at the time, and the bloke in the photo with his dog looks like the twat that started trouble in the town centre pubs, and got chased back to the Demolition Ballroom by blokes in the straight pubs that he had shouted abuse to, with bar stool legs that they broke off, they were psyched out and wanted to kill him!
He also pissed on the back of my legs whilst we (Skum Dribbzz) were playing our set, cos Eat Shit wanted to borrow my bass and couldn’t wait to plug in and play themselves. However as a result of stirring the hornets in town centre, the Police soon arrived in riot vans and stopped the gig, and that possibly became the end of the Demolition Ballroom thereafter.
No hard feelings to any Eat Shit members, but Skum Dribbzzz was also started just for fun, and achieved more respect than than you lot cos we didn’t cause any violence at gigs.

  9. Monti Says:

1st things 1st, be very careful who you`re callin a “Twat” my friend cos I`m the guy in the photo. 2ndly it was Sons of Badbreath not Eat Shit playin. I certainly wasnt the person who started any trouble and this is the 1st time I`ve bin accussed of it(I still live in Bristol and go to gigs). My only involvement in the fight (I do remember it) was myself and Steve Allen (Disorder gtrst) gettin battered as we dragged a guy called Spoons (who had his collarbone broken) away from the mob. 4th I never pissed on your legs also I never played the bass. Livin in Bristol I know why the DB closed and it was`nt because of that. I remember your band and have nothin against you and if you feel you get more respect good for you cos I dont give a shit. Lastly apart from that gig there was never any violence at our gigs (SoBB) and thats a fact unlike your tale above.

  10. Jay Vee Says:

Well Tim Cairns (SD guitarist) wouldn’t hesitate to call you names as he did on that night, after you pissed on my legs, I’m reliable at recognising people in photos, and it was you, not saying you played bass in Eat Shit or SoBB, just that you wanted to borrow my bass guitar for the bloke that played bass in Eat Shit, you were the pushy type, and you were so out of your face you pissed on the back of my legs telling me to hurry up and that’s a fact, not a tale. As for the trouble that got started, I can only say that a lot of people that were there that night were blaming it on Eat Shit, full stop. Have a nice life anyway.

  11. Penguin Says:

Try to not let this escalate too much chaps…it was 23 years ago, shit happened and no doubt it was unfortunate for a heap of folk who were present on that night, but y’know…

Jay Vee you may be interested to know that a Scum Dribblers gig in Nottingham 1983 is uploaded on this site if you use the search function and put the band name in. It’s in the Sean Forbes post.

  12. Jay Vee Says:

Thanks Penguin, the issue is now resolved as far as I’m concerned.
The Sean Forbes stuff is excellent, especially the Passion Killers set I’m listening to from the Station, Gateshead 14/01/84…beautiful.

  13. Jay Vee Says:

If anyone is still in contact with Tim Cairns from Scum Dribblers, Ian Glasper is interested to hear his story about the band for his 3rd book, UKHC from 1985 onwards.
Ian is the new bass player for Flux of Pink Indians, and can be found on myspace.com

  14. Monti Says:

Point taken Penguin but I take character assassination seriously. Also why keep mentionin Eat Shit they werent even fuckin there, this issue will be resolved after we meet face to face Jay Vee. Just for the record I was nothin to do with Eat Shit, now that is a FACT. I promise you Penguin I wont respond to any more of this baitin by someone sittin safely at home, while I can accept criticism I wont accept crap from someone, why should I??

  15. Jay Vee Says:

Well according to ‘the record’ on this very post about how SoBB came about, it would appear that you were a lot to do with Eat Shit, Monti and I’m just as safely at home as you are for sure, behaving myself which as I understand it you have problems doing yourself…I have no desire whatsoever to meet you face to face, as I’ve already responded, the issue is resolved as far as I’m concerned, I’ve now got over having the back of my legs pissed on, I’ve moved on and can accept criticism from you anytime without meeting face to face, so why should you want to meet someone face to face if you truly weren’t the person that is being accused in the first place? Sounds like you have a complex that you want to resolve with violence, in the safety of…? and I don’t do violence as I’m disabled.

  16. Nic Says:

    Internet threat!

  17. Nic Says:

    Dial-up Beatdown!

  18. johng Says:

monti-dont suppose you ever heard how paul and jackie got on after moving abroad?wasnt it turkey they went off to?after watching the film ‘midnight express’ i dont think it would have been my choice of destination.
wonder now and again where they ended up,little joy wont be so little anymore, she must be in her early 20′s now.
this internets a friendly old place at times eh.time for a brew…….

  19. Monti Says:

Gally, be with you in a minit. Yes Jay Vee you were pissed on but not by me but our bass player who like me at the time had long blond hair so there you go. As for me havin complex’s clickin on your name accessed your myspace where you talk bout your mental health issues. I have friends with similar problems so I`m not unsympathetic to your situation. Also it might interest you to know my mate Gabba (FUK,ex Chaos UK) is in regular touch with your ex band mate Tim, and he`s goin to tell him to contact Ian, happier now?? Finally the Ballroom closed for 1 reason and 1 reason only…Smack!!! And the trouble was started by some drunk out of town punx. So now know who pissed on you and your message to Tim passed on plus free advert for Scumdribblers I`d say thats enuff to put this issue to bed,…Yes??? Yup Violence aint big or clever but then again neither am I…C`est la vie

  20. Monti Says:

Gally my e-mail is theoriginalmonti@yahoo.co.uk no need to bore/excite the readers of this page (about SoBB not Eat bloody Shit gawd bless `em) with our life stories. I`ll check my e-mails later cos I`s busy busy busy now. Ok mate?

  21. Jay Vee Says:

Thanx Monti, a nice way to resolve a 23 year issue, I know the perils of Smack, and glad to hear Gabba 4 cox from Chaos UK is in contact with Tim, and R.I.P. to anyone that got lost along the way through the squat and / or Punk scene, it was a hard life, even though we didn’t actually live through the first or second world wars, we inherited the recycled hate of it, and small wonder we inherited some mental health issues as a result.

  22. Frankstein Says:

All water under the bridge, or is it all water under the britches?

  23. johng Says:

monti-will be intouch sooner rather than later.
who is the woman on the flyer that caused so much annoyance?

  24. Monti Says:

Jay Vee, Gabba called me a few hours ago to say he`s gave Tim Ian G`s no. Ian came to my gaff a while back to interview me and Martin bout SoBB Gabba and Hellbastard Scruff were there as well, it was a good nite. Ians a good bloke, the amount of work he`s put into his books, fuckin unbelieveable. Penguin thanx very much for these gig posters, much appreciated. Woman in photo was Olly`s Aunt who came round 281 to see Olly (who was out). She had a cup of tea, told us to tell Olly she`d be back then left. 30 minutes later Martin found the photo pinned to the inside of the front door. It gets weirder cos when Olly came back I told him his Aunt had bin round he replied “What Aunt”?? Turns out his dad`s a only child and his ma had 5 brothers. So really we dont know who she is. Maybe she`s the Aunt of one of the people who got annoyed??? Anybody know her???

  25. Thomp Says:

I say chaps all’s well in love and war! Saw both Eat Shit and Scumdribblers back in the day. Eat Shit played after a Conflict in some London venue that I’m hard pressed to recall and tried to play in Northampton at the end of the evening too! Guys I have to say that if it was alcohol/speed whatever, you did tend to have a bit of an attitude which was intimidating to people but hey we were all youngsters once eh? Personally I loved Scumdribblers, seen em all over the place and I used to write to Tim regular. As for Jayvee, he is a top guy. Campaign for Musical Destruction!

  26. Monti Says:

I would never deny that some (most?) of the time the behaviour of the SoBB/ E. Shit/ Hackney H.C. people was at times extreme and sometimes out of order, at the end of the day it was as you say, silly boys being silly boys. I`ve read a few things that mention intimidation and I find this puzzling and lookin at the photo taken in 281 of most of the crowd, hilarious cos we look like a bunch of clowns fallen on hard times. Only 2 maybe 3 of us would have stood a chance of makin it to the end of round 1 against a wet paper bag. Jeezus People!! These were the days of the NF/BM and the general public who`s tolerance levels were a lot less than now. Being lifted up in the air to be thrown in front of a tube train by a mob of nazi skins in the Angel tube stn as I was, thats intimidating. Some weren`t as lucky as me and suffered badly even killed. Maybe intimidatin`s a bit strong given the times we lived in then, harder times than now.

  27. Jay Vee Says:

You’ve got some hard knock experiences there to tell Monti, maybe you can get a book together yourself with the help of others, triggering those memories and get it all down in writing, would be a fascinating read…

  28. Monti Says:

I`d say character buildin rather than hard knock cos 90% of the situations I`ve been in have happened due to my choices of lifestyle. After all Glasgow street gang member/Army/Punk band/Member of well known “Outlaw” bike club aint the easiest path in life to choose. It`s the bullies who made my life hell (and I really do mean hell) until I was 8/9 when I realised that I was allowed to fight back who are to blame, after that everythin else just happened, there was no “game plan”. I have had 2 people sound me out about a book since I`ve “retired” since my body told me “enuff”. but I`d have to wait till loads of people died to prevent them gettin angry/arrested etc. If you read the interview I did in the latest Negative Reaction zine you`ll find that the tube station incident has a endin I`m sure you`ll approve of. Jay Vee mate, I knew I hadn`t pissed on your legs cos I`d never enter a confrontation with my cock out! Take care.

  29. Jay Vee Says:

    Ride free Monti.

  30. Monti Says:

Only another 16yrs to go and I can ride the bus free. If I can remember what bus to get on.

  31. Jay Vee Says:

People will care for you Monti I’m sure, you’re one of those Grandad types that the orderly’s will come to know and love :-)

  32. Monti Says:

I`ve told my daughter (18 last month) to avoid 2 things, Addiction (of anythin) and Pregnancy (at least until 30yrs old). I want her to get some life experience before she starts droppin sprogs. The only home I`ll be goin to when I have to give up my home will be a Funeral home anyway I woudnt go anywhere prepared to accept me, there standards would be to low and as I take in rescued dogs for the English Bull Terrier Society cats would avoid the place and old folks always have cats. Dont they?? Jay Vee it`s startin to look like we`ve got to nothin else to do

  33. Jay Vee Says:

Shall we go friggin’ in the Riggin’ then Monti? Cos there’s bleep all else to do, plenty to do as you know, even when it’s just sorting stuff out…

Bless ya mate for the rescued dogs work, and good luck with your daughter, order has come out of the chaos of your life and that’s an achievement you’ve every right to be proud of…

  34. Penguin Says:

Hey Monti, your daughter Billie posted a comment on the page below way back in May. Scroll down towards the bottom of the comments.
Pretty clued up young lady if she is browsing this site! ;-)

    http://www.killyourpetpuppy.co.uk/news/?p=436#comments

  35. Monti Says:

D`you know the best thing (from my point of view) about the bit of re-interest in SoBB is that its come as Billie moves from her schoolmates into adult frendships (that make sense??) when asked about her parents she talks bout SoBB/Punk even bout C.UK + FUK (Gabba 1st seen Billie when she was 10mins old) rather than havin a baddy for a daddy. Its not nice livin on the back of somones bad reputation no sir, they should go get there own.

  36. Jay Vee Says:

Monti, talking of addictions wonder what happened to Carolyn B.?

She was in a relationship for a few months with a Chaos UK member, and also Pete Lyons from Antisect, she was from Northamptonshire, Gabba will remember her I’m sure…

She was a friend to me, hope she managed to free herself of the addictions of those times, last I saw of her she moved to London to rehabilitate her lifestyle…talk about hard life, she certainly had one.

  37. Monti Says:

Carolyn, who did vocals for Antisect and had a shaved head with ponytail Ghengis Khan style??? Her surname was Wallis i think. Wait a minit i got vague memories of Mower C. UK. singer goin out with a diffrint Caroline/lyn, she def came from Northhants, yup it just came back to me its the 2nd girl. Sorry mate I never saw her after her and Mower split. Martin the SoBB gtrst is more in touch with who`s where in London, I`ll ask him

  38. Justine Says:

“I knew I hadn`t pissed on your legs cos I`d never enter a confrontation with my cock out!”

Ha-ha Monti, made me laugh! I remember that big fight at the Ballroom – nasty nasty. My son turned 21 this week! Funny having grown up kids… See you round in Bristol sometime soon…

  39. Monti Says:

Hi Justine, how are ya? Made me laugh too, never realised I`d written that, it`s` true tho. You`ll have to take my word for it but I would advise blokes if attacked while pissin, (happend to me once) 1st Get cock back inside trousers while avoidin punches( No need to do up zip/buttons) 2ndly…Fight back//Run away……..Jeezus your boys….a man now. At Dropkick Murphys gig this year me an Terry(East End Badoes) were laffin bout the fact we`re both 50 next year and our daughters were chattin at the bar, drinks in hand. Terry`s girl Liberty does some singin for the Murphys on their British gigs. Dunno bout you but theres no rush to enter Grandparenthood. Take Care

  40. Thomp Says:

I recall Carolyn Brynk she had a crucifix tatooed on her forehead, dunno if that helps, but it is fairly distinctive. Monti you make I smile, you must have 1001 reasons to smile and I like that. Just like a big old oak tree, lots of spirit and depth.

  41. Monti Says:

Yup, thats the girl Mower was seein, I remember the tattoo. The phrase “you make I smile” sounds like you come from Bristol/West Country am I right?? Glad I make you smile now I got 1002 reasons. Oak tree thing goes over the top of my head tho but it sounds ok

  42. Thomp Says:

Nah, Northants, middle english disaster zone! I’ve always had a soft spot for the west country mind. Great music, Good cider, beautiful countryside, once you get past Nailsea!

  43. Sussex Says:

Last I heard, Carolyn was living in Kettering. Nope, she hasn’t got past her vices. She spent some time in Holloway too, for numerous petty offences.I heard this a couple of years ago, but I doubt little has changed.

  44. Jay Vee Says:

Okay last I heard Carolyn got married while living in Kettering, that much I do know cos I went to the wedding, but she moved to London shortly afterwards, that was at least 10 years ago!!…her and new hubby moved to London to rehabiltate, through the hospitality of a wealthy friend that was gonna make sure they quit their vices for good…that’s where we lost contact.

Back to Monti – I bought a copy of Negative Reaction at Durham Punk Festival recently 13/09/08 (which included a brilliant set from Angelic Upstarts, and 10 mins worth of good quality vid can be seen on Youtube of that…) and read your interview, interesting and I see what you mean about approving of what you were saying in there Monti – nice one :-)

  45. Monti Says:

I`ve seen the Upstarts a few times in the last 3-4yrs (non-Mensi) and I thought they were back on top form. Bet that festival was good, SoBB played the Station 3 times and we always had a great time up there, good people

  46. scoobie Says:

What happen to the hair monti?, the music is different you have come a long way since Gutersloh. Gives a ring sometime.

    Scoobie

  47. Monti Says:

Hey Scoobie!! Yup theres certainly been a lot happenin since our Army days as for the hair I got fed up with it and returned to havin a skinhead again (It highlights my thuggish good looks ha ha)

  48. Val n Martin Says:

    Hi
We used to live at Colvester Cres Dalston in a squat with Martin Brain Damage. Fraggel n Age and some others. Sadly we know Age passed away years ago but just wanted to know if you know what happend to the others. Also what happend to Alien last time we saw him was about 18 years ago. We remember the 3 crowns, that big squat at an old hospital or something, gigs at the peace centre.
We moved back to Sheffield in 87 to have our first child. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers those days.
Val n Martin (yes still together after all these years)

  49. luggy Says:

I walked down Colvestone Crescent this afternoon, not a crusty to be seen though.
Alien manages Turnpike Lane tube station these days! Still drums every now & again with his band, Mush. The next gig that they’re doing is at Bardens Boudoir on Stoke Newington High Road on Friday November 7th supporting Tofu Love Frogs.

  50. Val n Martin Says:

    Hi Luggy

Do you remember Fraggel who went out with Age and they had baby Oden who will now be 21 or 22 . Do you know what happend to her i know she went to live in Bristol but not heard from her for years. Does anyone know what happend to Martin Brain Damage he was smallish with long black hair and into hell metal. We also lived with crusty Gavin saw him years ago he was living in Derby but think he got run out of town by the local sherif or something. Jay also lived with us last thing we heard he was living under a mountain some where. Please get in touch if you know anything about any of these old crustys or anyone i may have forgotten in me old age. We have three kids now our son is 20 you can find his latest film on you tube we also have two girls 17,nearly 14.

    G’day,
I’m Clint who posted the SoBB tape to Penguin and have been assisting the Dutch guy, Edwin, in his project for the Hackney punks 2x LP.
It is a slow process collecting all the related photo’s, printed matter and tunes for this massive release and we’d still love to hear from people who might feel like contributing to this release. Anything, fliers, interviews, photographs(live or otherwise-hanging out, causing trouble etc), live/ rehearsal tapes, clippings. Whatever you might have in the musty loft, otherwise taking up space and collecting dust. All things can and will be returned after use.
    In particular, I am still hoping to locate the Eat Shit interview from Deek/Oi Polloi’s ‘zine, Skinhead times(I think that is what the ‘zine was called) as well as any tapes by the following bands;
    Poison
    Eat Shit
    Sons of Bad Breath
    The Old Codgers
    Goatsbreath and the Camel Cocks
    Grinder
    Blower
    Thanks for reading, I hope to hear from some of you. Contact me on;

    Mulch demo
    REST IN PAIN tape(s)

Real Molesworth Dirt (aren’t these guys now in Certified?)
    Heresy(early era especially)
Antisect demos, early live, rehearsal, pre-Antisect bands(names escape me now)
    Warwound-maybe photo’s/fliers for upcoming LP
Asylum demos(originals if possible, for upcoming LP) plus fliers/photo’s
    More Skum Dribblurrrrrzzzzzzzzzz
    Violent Uprising live tapes

  59. Trev Says:

    Hi Monti,
What was the place called in Hackney? Wanna call it the Blue House but i’m sure my memory fails me. Think we played a few gigs together, Kardboard Box, Ballet School? Do you remember Gutrot?

Anyway glad your well and look forward to the new I.Glasper book

    Take Care
    Trev ExAxegrinder

  60. alistairliv Says:

The Blue House was Sutton House. It was built in 1535 and bought by the the National Trust in 1930. The ASTMS trades union were tenants between 1960s and early 1980s. After they left it was squatted. After the squatters were evicted the building’s condition continued to decline. An active local campaign was mounted by the Sutton House Society, originally known as the Save Sutton House Campaign which was formed in March 1987. This provoked the National Trust into restoring the building.

That would be a ‘yes’ Trev! It was the Blue House down Homerton way.

  62. Phil R Says:

the majority of the Blue Hse squatters then went on to squat Laura Place in Clapton which was owned by the sally army and was at least twice as big as the Blue hse. This place became a spring board for a lot of urbanites to become travellers. Both were classic squats, with a lot of fun to be had!

  63. Monti Says:

To Trev, i`d have called it the Blue House, yeh course I remember Gutrot, i`ve met Tim Knight at last 2 rebellion festivals and recently in Bristol..I remember the Kardboard Box gig..mental times eh? Good times tho, always good to hear that the good (as in decent people) from them days are ok….my 18yr old daughters goin mad waitin for the book to come out. Haha become part of history by gettin pissed and makin a fuckin racket…how good is that??….to Penguin: alright mate things all good??…..to Alaisterliv..if you dont mind me askin.. why’s a man with such a knowledge/interest of old buildins lookin at a page-link about a band of numbskulls??? All the best to ya…numbskull no. 1

  64. Penguin Says:

All good over here Monti, thank you for asking…

  65. chas Says:

I went out with a girl called Karen (from Yeovil) who lived there in 1985, her mate Christine (?) was one of the original inhabitants and named it the blue house after her favourite club in Hamburg where she was from – or so they told me. I went back a couple of years ago and the NT had kept one of the rooms as it was when it was the blue house – nice idea I thought. It was a great place – I remember one sunday when I was there these guys turned up saying they were from the council and needed to remove asbestos. Turned out they were nicking the linenfold panelling which only exists in one other building in England – we were too hungover to question how asbestos would have been put in a tudor panelled room – it got recovered and replaced though eventually. When we played there we were paid in cans of tenants super – dangerous!

  66. luggy Says:

How did your gig go, Chas? Saw Dave afterwards at Bardens.
The Bluehouse has been discussed before on this site:

    http://www.killyourpetpuppy.co.uk/news/?p=734

Don’t know if you know but Christine is no longer with us. R.I.P.
[EDIT: Thankfully this was just a dodgy rumour & she's very much alive]
I still see Karen quite often, there’s a drawing by Wilf of her used by Penguin as the default picture on his ‘All The Madmen’ site:

    http://www.myspace.com/allthemadmenrecords

  67. chas Says:

Great thanks luggy, can’t speak for the quality but I enjoyed it. I think Gerard’s going to stick some pictures on the flowers site – hmm, I’m not quite the thin white duke I was but that could be a diet thing – I moved onto solids once I stopped squatting. Good to see Dave and Steve Corr again and remind ourselves of the many entertaining and ridiculous things that happened in Stamford Hill twenty odd years ago. A shame so many reminiscences end with ‘he became a junky’ but at least most of them survived. Sorry to hear about Christine, but it’s good to know Karen’s still around. I must have seen that drawing 100 times and never realised it was her (she had a shaved head when I knew her), but now you mention it…. Say hi from me next time you see her.Was Bardens the Tofu Love Frogs? How was that?

  68. luggy Says:

Steve’s chucked some pictures of your gig on his MySpace. Karen always used to be bald when I lived with her in various squats but she’s grown it back now.
Bardens was the Frogs gig although I preferred the support bands, they should have let sleeping frogs lie! Lovely people but familiarity has bred contempt with me. It was a good night, lots of people there but I overdid it a bit so lunched out the John Sinclair thing last night. He’s probably just a fat old hippy still extolling the virtues of hash anyway.

  69. Hippy Nigel Says:

    Monti
    Nigel from upstairs at 281
You still see Olly? Aint seen anyone from Viccy Park Road days since was in Bristol with either Striknien DC or Paranoid Visions, buggered if can recall who it was now. Borrowed a van off you I think but could have been another person for gigs in Hackney….
Laura Place was very short lived though seem to have hazy recollections of a sweat lodge in garden….

  70. Phil R Says:

Laura place had two different generations of squatters. It was prob the first lot that had the sweat lodge. Some of the second lot went off to squat the red house in derbyshire

  71. Trev Says:

Thanks for all the info on the blue house, my memory’s fading whilst my waistband expands!!!!
Monti, glad your well, my son’s only 10 weeks so i’ll put the book into storage and bore him rigid when he’s older, I’m sure he’ll be embarassed but then what are dads for.
Take care and see those that are going at the Flux gig
    Trev

  72. Monti Says:

To Val+Martin: Sorry but cant find any info on Fraggle i`ll keep askin about tho..Yeh Odin must easily be bout 22..bet he`s a big lump of a bloke like his old man was eh??………To Trev: Given the excesses of the bad ol`days ive got a surprisingly good memory of a lot of wot went on then..my 18yr old daughters really into the idea that I was in a band after all loads of fathers probably say “yeah I was in a band etc” and for them to find out you actually were in a band aint a bad thing. My girls known Martin(SoBB) and Gabba(Chaos UK/FUK) all her life and she`s more impressed than embarresd bout it all…hahaha Bless`er!!..To Nigel: Alrite mate, good to hear your fine, im still in touch with Martin, Olly+Alien..there all doin fine.

  73. baron von zubb Says:

Hello Monti & to all on the best numb skull thread.
    Well well.
I bought Bob Shorts book the other week and realised that Lulu offer a print to order publishing thing.
A completely new concept to me the luddite that i am.
    So .. here it is.
    http://www.lulu.com/content/4875148.
A massive thanks to all on this site who have made encouraging comments about the bits you read, and for info given.
    Why have I done it?
Well not just cos im an egocentric vain git.
Also because there is, as far as i know, nothing in print about ‘us’, the London punks of that era from ‘78 to the riots of ‘81.
A bit b4 the era of the books that Monti et all are in
I wrote it 20 years ago, so I owe to that person and all of us who have survived, to complete.
Allen Ginsburg it aint but its a slice of history.
The .99p that I get is going to charity.
So go to lulu and buy it for xmas!
The perfect tome for credit crunch Britain.
    cheers again.
    Jake

  78. Kaff Says:

  79. slyme68 Says:

Monti – next time you see Dalb, tell him Simon from Amhurst Park days sends regards… Tell him that Ian is clean and working as a journalist – he’ll never beleive that!

  80. The Fat Man Says:

    Hi there people..

Also mentioning Ian Glasper, Stevie, Tim and me did an interview with him for the new book regarding Gutrot & the Kardboard Box.. Also still in touch with Scottish Alan who did the Kardboard Box flyers and was an integral part of the crew.. Also like to point out that the Hackney Hell crew helped us build the stage there that many bands played on!!

  81. Graham Burnett Says:

Say hello to Dalb from me as well, we spent many happy hours at the bar of the Anarchist Bookfair with Malcolm from Housmans over the years…

  82. The Fat Man Says:

Hello mate.. Hope all’s well.. Saw you’d been posting on here!!
Was always a laugh runnin’ the bar and the bookfair.. and a way of getting drunk for free!!

  83. Chris Says:

Anyone know Carol from Colvestone Crescent and how she is?

  84. Val n Martin Says:

    Hi Chris
Are you the Chris who had the lovely white dog called Yogie. You used to wear a hat I think. We are Val and Martin (I had lots of make up and hair back then Martin had black spikey hair sometimes pink and black ) we used to live in Colvester Cres with Age and Fraggle and Brain Damage, Gavin, Jay etc. If it is you how are yuo keeping?
Not seen you for many many years..
    Val n Martin

  85. Chris Says:

Yes it is Val, me Chris. Good to hear from you two and all is well. I cannot believe together still, really good and 3 kids too. What do yous do to survive, jobs etc. I vividly remember Colvestone and you lot, twas mental, alsatians, glue and shit etc. I was seeing Carol, your mate, that too was mental. My dog was the best, English bull terrier, always getting his lipstick out. I live in Australia with wife and 6 year old Ronnie, tis grand. Got messed up for many years in 90s but that was then. Saw Marnie in Canada in 93, Gail98, Ages x -she is a healer type in Glastonbury. Alien is still about Hackney, pulled the ceiling down at my wedding allegedly. Gavin was in Brighton 10 years ago I heard. How is Carol? Do you still look like punkers, birds of prey tattoos etc? Cheers,
    Chris.

  86. Val n Martin Says:

    Hi Chris,
Yes its mad that we are still together its about 25yrs now our kids are 21 – take a look at his last film on you tube ” plague world” he does all the special effects himself. Then we have two girls 17, 14 we now have a cute dog called Splodge. No we dont look punky now. Kept in touch with Fraggel for a bit but lost touch same with Gavin and Liz.
Are you on facebook if so search for my name.
We dont see Carole anymore but last I heard she was fine.
What do you do in Australia?
Where abouts are you? We keep saying we are going over to see Martins relatives they came to see us a few years ago and thought it was freezing it was our summer.
Great to hear from you keep in touch.
    Luv
    Val N Martin

  87. JJ Says:

    Great reading and great tunes.
Does anyone have Blower/Poison/God Told Me To Do It tapes lingering about?
I sent Scruff a box of tapes to record these for me on two years ago along w/$20 to post them to the US and still hasn’t sent them so I am really looking forward to hearing this stuff for a long time!

  88. Tall Chris Says:

What happened to Eat Shit? I remember them leaving Hackney for Bristol ostensibly because of the cheap cider available out West but also because of rumours that revenge for the tattooing of puppy breaths forehead were becoming a bit serious. Is goatsbreath and dogsbreath still in the land of the living?

  89. Penguin Says:

Pus ‘Goatsbreath’ got stabbed after jumping out a window in Bristol during a drug deal that went horribly wrong back in the late 1980′s. Blyth Power played Bristol the night after and returned with that news. Not sure if it completely accurate, just what I was told at the time.
Always thought Pus was an ok bloke the times I met him when he was staying at 108 Brougham Road, with a load of other HHC members.

  90. Tall Chris Says:

Cheers penguin. Anyone ever hear of Napoleon any more?

  91. monti Says:

chris mate, u been givin sum duff info sumwhere down the line….the only member of eat shit to live in bristol was shaun in mid 90s….it was in fact me (monti…sons of badbreath`s shouter…can’t say singer now can i ???) who moved to bristol durin the HHC period soon followed by martin (also sobb)…cheap cider`n face tattoos are just a “chinese whispers” style add on and ad nuffink to do wif why me or martin moved to bristol…..penguin got the basic story bout pus right but pus had met a guy who`d bin ripped off n he went back to the house wif him…he was stabbed in the street but didnt jump out of any windows…this happened two streets away from my house…i went to give the old bill info on how to contact pus`s mum (who lived in ostend) and was held n questioned for 6-7 hrs as if i was involved before they let me go…they found his ma thank fuck cos otherwise i`d have had to formally ID him…your right bout pus tho…he was a good bloke, irritatin at times but aint we all ???…dogbreath (age) died of a smack o.d at sum party in london….shame cos like pus despite his appearance he too was a sound bloke…napoleon`s the only HHC bloke that i dunno where he is but avin lived wif n spent hours in vans wif `im i’d say he`s either a mental patient or a born again christian (for the 2nd time) politician…live life people…!
    monti

  92. monti Says:

to update and prevent any “nonsense tales” about pus…out of the 5 blokes who stabbed pus 3 of em od`d within 3-4 yrs after pus`s death…the other 2 were killed in seperate incidents by “person or persons unknown”…it’s true i was questioned in relation to these deaths as were a few other people but lack of evidence AKA none has led to nuffink tho none of us has officially been 100% cleared of any involvment…its also been at least 10 yrs since a copper last talked to me bout it…all info i’ve just said is fact nuffink more, nuffink less…if u hear otherwise then your bein lied to…if any of you readin this are avin a drink then i`d like u to raise ur glasses / cans / plastic bottles etc to the memory of two good men who`s lives were cut short…Pus & Age…RIP fellas

  93. Penguin Says:

Welcome back Monti, shame about the grim subject matter but hoping you and your daughter are both keeping well.

  94. monti Says:

alrit peng mate…we`re ok thanx urself?? grim material it is mate but im makin sure people know the facts `n nuffink else…mate ive read all sortsa fings on sum sites bout us lot…people claimin to ave been in the Hackney Hell Crew and im finkin who`s that??… funniest of all was from a guy in italian band cheetah chrome mothers boys or summink sayin a HHC person threatened him wif an axe he took from his toolbag which he ad wif `im cos he`d been at work…forget the fuckin axe but who ad a toolbag never mind a fuckin job in them days???…penguin u`ll like tis one…i saw a post written by old dangerspoons in febuary where he wrote about the filthy junkies somewhere…i asked the question were u a clean junkie then???…im blocked from that site now…fuck em!!!

  95. Simon Says:

    Hey Monti
Your posts are really interesting- HHC and everything. How much of this is in Ian Glasper’s forthcoming book?
    Cheers, Simon

  96. monti Says:

Alrite Simon, the Sons of Bad Breath chapter in Ians book is approx 3,000 words, mainly about the band than the HHC….Eat Shit ave got a chapter as well but i aint read it….imagine it`ll be bout the band again…..Dunno who started callin us the HHC..personally i fink its a stupid name but it cud be worse…Ive read on websites loadsa HHC stories…sum true..sum wif a hint of truth`n sum absolute bollox…Also a few people claim to ave been in HHC i aint even heard of em ever so lets sort out a few facts..The Hackney Hell Crew consisted ONLY of people who lived in the massive squat 281 Victoria Park Rd. Hackney, this included all members of both bands and mates such as Pus, Robso, Simo and a handful of others….nobody else!!!….Gotta admit im still bit bemused at the interest in HHC etc…at the time we was just livin our lives in our own chaotic way….Some people from that era in a attempt to make their own sad tale more excitin or wotever will add summink bout the HHC..are you readin this Legion of Parasites fella who said we arrived at one of there gigs and intimidated the crowd..one fing to say to him…”BOO!!!!”….ur easily intimidated or as i suspect talkin utter shit…..as for the cheetah chrome mummysboys wif their axeman tale…you deserve a slap for that u silly fucker!!…bloke said i had come to the gig after finishin work (????) wif an axe…wot was my job then Inner London Lumber fuckin Jack? Id like to thank Ian Glasper who came to my house to interview Martin`n me…nice fella..Cheers mate!!!…Simon type “Hackney Hell Crew” into ur search engine and you`ll find sum stuff bout HHC..mainly bollox though.

  97. John No Last Name Says:

    Hi Monti,

I actually do remember the axe story, I heard it the first time from Sean (GodTold Me to Do It/Eat Shit) and someone from either the Stupids or Bad Dress Sense who saw the whole thing go down. Then I heard it again a week or so later from Sid from CCM.

I remember Sid showing me his war wounds from that brawl and doubt he made it up, but I am also pretty sure it wasn’t any of the original Hell Crew, but one of the groups of ‘crusties’ that showed up later and started trying to emulate the way you lot dressed.

  98. Clinton Says:

Sean Eat Shit mentioned that it may have been Mark Palmer who coined the name Hackney Hell Crew. As for the CCM “axeman”, it may have been a person by the name of Anarchy Sid. Hell, I could be making all this up, as I’m far too young and from Australia-so missed out on this era of Hackney punk.
I did release the Eat Shit ‘live’ 7″, and have done a little research on the topic.
As for Napoleon, I heard he was working at a fairground in Nottingham-but this is not confirmed.

  99. Mike Says:

Hi Clint! You’re correct, CCM axe-incident was nowt to do with HHC. It was Anarchy Sid, orig. from Wolverhampton. It all started over some pizza (?) apparently…Kay (Decadent Few singer) was living w/Anarchy Sid in early 90′s (he died around ’96-7) and he told me what he could remember of the incident and his ‘participation’.

  100. chris Says:

By coincidence I found a load more photos taken at 281 only last night. Happy to scan them and forward to anyone they’re of interest to when i’m back in London.

There was a ‘HCC’ comic strip in Vague magazine which may have established the name back then.

Was never part of that scene myself and could never understand the crusty look but all the folk I knew who were were sound and a good laugh. Had some highly productive shop-lifting missions with a few 281 residents who would be magnets for any store detectives as soon as they entered a shop whilst I got busy filling my the ‘poachers pockets’ of my adapted coat :-)

  101. Grant Says:

Just scanned an old flyer of an Eat Shit gig with Hagar The Womb at the Metropolitan, Farringdon Rd. If anyone’s interested send me your email and i’ll forward it.

  102. Clinton Says:

Hagar The Womb written with a pair of breasts as their logo! Come and watch Eat Shit blow Hagar The Womb off the stage or some such nonsense-what a flyer.
Apparently that gig was a viewing event for label types looking at signing Hagar The Womb. I’m sure Hagar The Womb were happy to have nice noise boys as Eat Shit opening for them on such a special night.

  103. Grant Says:

    that’s the one…

  104. John No Last Name Says:

If I remember correctly Eat Shit were never actually booked to play that show, but Sean and Animal came to the conclusion that if you made more flyers and posters saying you were playing than the headlining band did they would have to let you play. Which is exactly what happened, the whole part about Hagar showcasing for labels seems a bit unlikely though. Somehow I doubt the Hags were itching to get signed by a whole slew of big record label fat cats.
Animal was walking around that night in military fatigues pretending to be an Falklands vet with the handset of an old telephone in his hands that he kept yelling into in a bad American accent and handing to people saying “here it’s for you”. I didn’t make it into the show as I was friends with both Sean & Animal and the Hagars and didn’t feel like being part of pissing off a group of my friends which seemed pretty inevitable.

  105. monti Says:

sum interestin info there chaps but yet again I`d like to remind people that the H H C consisted of all members of both eat shit`n sons of bad breath plus pus, simo, robso and one or two others….if anyone finks or beleives otherwise then sorry but u are wrong or ave been told bollox…cud`ve been palmer who came up wif the name but the only one of us who wud say he was in the HHC was napoleon who in my personal opinion a total fuckin idiot`n the idea of`im workin in a fairground is a bit ludicrous as he was one of the laziest fuckers ive ever met wif the strength of a 8yr old girl….i remember that hagar the womb fing but am confused as to why if pretendin to be a falklands vet why was animal talkin in a american accent???….the biggest difference between the 2 bands was that eat shit were really an outlet for sean`n animals sumtimes hilarious but mainly cringworthy sense of humour…and sons of bad breath??…well we were just a shit band who were avin a laff….as opposed to the many shit bands who took themselves far to seriously……but the funniest fing of all is the fact that 25 or so years on people are still talkin about wot essentially was a buncha muppets (includin myself) avin a laff……give it 100yrs`n i can see the HHC being one of londons urban legends complete wif rumours of incest`n cannibalism…you`ll see!!!……the metropolitan in farringdon…probably the most unsuitable gig venue ever…ambulance station on the old kent road was a good place, to play and also the see bands….antisect & crucifix gig was one of the best gigs i ever went to…ace!!

  106. Grant Says:

I remember well the Antisect & Crucifix gig, amazing. I’d followed them around the previous four nights and the gigs were great but the atmosphere at that last gig of the tour at the Ambulance Station was something special.
I remember seeing Eat Shit at Bowes Lyon House too, might have been supporting Flux but can’t be sure about that. I travelled up there with the lads (HHC) from London, i knew Alien a bit as he would come up to P’boro (my hometown) every now and then with his then girlfriend who was also from P’boro and was a mate of mine.
I can remember staying at 281 a couple of times during the wintertime, once in the basement bedroom which had some broken windows and it would snow inside.

  107. Trev Says:

    Hi Monti

I forgot about this page until I stumbled across it again. Hope you and the family are well. Lots of bands reforming, Amebix in the US with the Soulfly drummer!!! Deviated Instinct, Hellbastard (did they ever split) maybe a crust reunion is on the cards lol! Any news on the book? it all seems to of gone very quiet, is there going to be a DVD as with The Day? You have to get yourself on that mate.

  109. Simon Says:

Hi Monti and other genuine HHC on here,

You really need to document the times in Hackney. Just read Ian Glasper’s new book and it would make for a very interesting read from a very interesting period in musical history.

    Cheers all
    Simon

  110. monti Says:

I got the time these days Simon but i wudnt ave a clue `ow to go about it…..aint been able to get the new book in Bristol yet but look forward to readin it…they were mental days but sum good lastin friendships were made..Dalb (comment above urs)`n me see each other regular`n Trev (above`im) i ad a drink wif at rebellion……..the more i fink of it i can imagine a book about us hackney gits wud make a pretty funny book…the fings that went on in 281 victoria park road wud stretch the imagination to the extreme…altho funniest fingof all is that fact that Alien SoBB/Eat Shit drummer is now a London Underground Stationmaster hahaha..All the best to ya`ll……monti

  111. monti Says:

  113. call me old fashioned Says:

Call me old fashioned but is Glasper’s book just a list of the worst bands in history or did everyone else miss out on a significant cultural event or deep and meaningful political import?

  114. monti Says:

so wot if it is???..if ur lookin for deep and meaninful political import why u on this page fella??..stick to the guardian or wotever u read….ur possibly right about the “worst bands” but u gotta remember a lot of people dont give a shit about significant cultural events etc maybe u or everyone else could write a book about em

  115. Tony Puppy Says:

Call me old fashioned, ‘call me old fashioned’, but in the book on the Roxy (‘The Roxy London WC2 – A Punk History’ by Paul Marko) the best bits for me were about the lesser known bands playing there and the previously unwritten history of the place after the luminaries had moved on.

Sometimes the cultural significance isn’t so easy to pin down.

  116. Tony Puppy Says:

Another case in point is the Stokey Punx film brought to my attention by Mr Lugworm.

Part one of the film here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlNVK6fhBtE

Excellent stuff, but not easy to explain why.

  117. grim Says:

Just heard that Skinny – bass player of Coitus who are featured in the video mentioned above – is dead.

Condolences to his family and friends.

  118. Monti Says:

Skinny`s funeral was held on monday 23rd Nov…Martin`n Alien attended. Condolences to Michelle`n the kids….R.I.P. Skinny mate

  119. grim Says:

    Any news on the cause?

  120. luggy Says:

I heard that he had a brain haemorrhage. R.I.P.

  121. Penguin Says:

I had a brain haemorrhage when I was 23 years old (20 years ago). I was extemely lucky though and got patched up with bits of metal on my brain and so forth. Must never have an M.R.I. scan for any part of my body as that metal will fly out my head from the inside of my skull (attracted to the magnetic force of the scan) and that will be the end of me!
I was also on prescribed downers for over two years. Phenobarbitol (dunno about the spelling). Like I say I was one of the lucky ones.
    Shame about Skinny. R.I.P.

  122. luggy Says:

I knew someone who collapsed walking out of his squat with one. Woke up in hospital with no idea what had happened but thankfully made a full recovery. You never know when shit like this is going to happen to you.

  123. grim Says:

Very sad as he was still quite young.

    RIP Skinny

  124. monti Says:

I was told he died of organ failure possibly due to drink but i s`pose theres all sorts of stories going about…wot really happened will come out eventually tho…..Fuckin`ell penguin mate that sounds`orrible mate!!!…..I gotta say, Skinny was one of the most likeable blokes u cud meet…very sad!!!

  125. luggy Says:

You might be right, I’m only going by what someone told me in the pub last week.

  126. S. Says:

  127. grim Says:

Ahhhh, “down the pub.” Always such a source of accurate information.

As Bruce says it is very sad and Skinny was one of the more likeable people in a scene filled with nasty toerags.

  128. luggy Says:

Didn’t doubt the pub source as his sister knew Skinny well.

  129. grim Says:

    Sorry Micky, I stand corrected.

    Hello people,
Stumbled onto this via a google search for HHC pics.
So many names brought to mind….
I have a few nice pix of Gavin, Jay, Martin BD etc, none of Pus or Age tho… shame, A friend wrote a song about Pus being dead, it was called Pus Is Dead, I think it was Robin Green…..
I’m not claiming to have ever been HellCrew, they were well established before I hit the scene. But, Fk, Hackney, Stokey was fun in the late 80′s.
The party on Brooke Rd. The ‘Centa’, Next door to the Cricketers. The ‘leg out of the window house’ in Finsbury Park……
Oh fk this brings it all back….

  149. Dai Punk Says:

    The cat wasn’t from Brooke,
Gavin & Jay opened a house, (round the corner from Reighton?) only to find a family of 8 living in one of the front rooms. Or something like that…
The Cat was in the cellar, in a sideboard…….?

  150. Palmer Says:

ello monti-bin a long time, hope all is good with you-the term hackney hell crew was born one night late 83,me,alien,olly,martin and tony lynch were at andy martins place in vicky park rd listening to shades (heavy metal shop) radio request show whilst trippin-me and tony nipped out to the phone box and requested they play anything by venom for the hackney hell crew which they later played black metal freaking a few of us out…and thus the hackney hell crew name stuck!
met up with alien, martin, aaron and tinsel the other night, all doing good

  151. martin Says:

  153. Dev Says:

Greetz to everyone I knew who’s posted on this thread… and to those I didn’t. Just wondered if Martin still had the ‘old man’ haircut… heh, heh, that was brilliant mate and well ahead of it’s time (har-har).

Does anyone have a tape of the whole concert at the Wood Green Art Centre that night… I seem to remember quite a few bands playing (Decadent Few, my old band TMG…)? Might have been another night though?

  154. Mike Says:

Dev, Mick here of Decadent Few, how are you? long time etc etc. I have tape of this gig- SOBB, God Told Me To Do It, a few tracks by State Hate and Decandant Few. I don’t think it was Tom’s Midnight Garden but just you and Gary (maybe Pat of DIJ too?) who got up first and did a few songs. Ask Penguin for my email and I’ll sort you something out with it.

  155. DavidM Says:

Hey Mick. Dunno if you remember me. David ‘ere in Aberdeen. Lived in London for a time too where we met – for the first time at a Decadent Few show with Citizen Fish and The Gr’ups at I think the Samuel Pepys ’93. Had written to each other prior to my moving to London that same year, and would run in to each other a couple more times at shows at The Robey. Still run Inflammable Material? I used to purchase copies of MRR from you after my return to Aberdeen. How you doing?

  156. Penguin Says:

Mike I sent Dev your details.

  157. Mike Says:

Cheers Penguin. David: good to hear from you again after many years. I still do the mail order on & off. Are you still in Aberdeen? D.Few are still going, albeit in laidback rehearse-whenever mode. We may even do a gig soon, heaven forbid. Anyway, hope life is treating you well.

  158. Dev Says:

Alright Mick, good to hear from you – all well here, hope things fine with you. Good to hear that DF are (maybe?) planning a gig at some point, will definitely come along if it’s anywhere near London.

I’ll send you an email tomorrow, I’d like to have a copy, thanks. You’re right about the line-up at that gig (Me, Pat, Gary and Dougie) – it was our second gig as TMG2 (a new version of the old band) but it didn’t work out. Do you remember Dougie? He played Bass and lived at Turnpike Lane in Wood Green – would like to find out where he is now. BTW; I’ve got a video of the first DF gig you might be interested in. Say hello to Kay and Womble for me – spk soon. Cheers!

  159. luggy Says:

Dev, Dougie’s back living in Scotland, can’t remember exactly where. Saw Alan Tolmie the other day, he still sees him every now & again.

  160. Dev Says:

Thanks Luggy – he was a good mate and a few years ago someone told me he ‘might’ not be with us anymore… glad they were wrong.

  161. DavidM Says:

Cheers Mick. Yeah things are good here. Still in Aberdeen I’m afraid:)
Decadent Few are still together? No way. Cool. Just wondering whether you made the Skinny memorial show. Was great catching Kay with Coitus. Make regular trips back to London for gigs and so on, back again in May for Scumfest. Good to hear from you man.

nice to read some good news Luggy

  167. jock dougie Says:

Hello everyone, good to hear you are all wellish. I am alive n well and living in Paisley. I remember that gig as i played in TMG2, with a badly out of tune bass, and later that night played bass for GTMTDI, as Bill R.I.P. had given up the concept of music and was breaking down the barriers of audience/band interaction. Well chucking stuff back at them anyway. Think Chas came onstage and opened a can of super T in my face mid “gig.” Saw the orig Toms stuff on youtube good stuff Dev.

  168. chas Says:

Dougie – nice to hear from you. The tenants thing sounds about right, especially if this is the GTMTDI gig at wood green. I never knew you were there or that TMG played but then all i can tell you is that i went with a 4 pack of tenants super

  169. luggy Says:

A big hello from me too, Dougie. Have good memories of you from those days.

  170. chas Says:

PS I do of course mean ‘about right’ in the sense of ‘believable’ rather than, well any other sense! I’m looking forward to hearing the Tom’s Midnight Garden CD if Dev ever gets it together to send me the free copy he promised me for writing the lyrics to one of the songs (or is that just too cheap of me?). I saw him a few weeks ago and he was well. We got pissed with Gerard – again!

  171. jock dougie Says:

good to hear from you all. nice piece about solstice, pity its pissing down or i would have been dancing round some stones, any old stones ones will do. is the pic of luggy, used in the toms youtube being given a helping hand by the long arm from stop the city? if so which year? seem to rember getting arrested at one and the bins played that night at the fulham greyhound. which was chas favourite venue

  172. luggy Says:

Think that was from the first Stop The City, Dougie. May have been the second one as I was nicked at that one as well!

  173. chas Says:

i seem to remember seeing you in a brief but passionate embrace with the long arm at a CND one at Hyde Park 82? but they’d obviously got the wrong man – or maybe i have. I reckon if we played after it it was 84 but my memory’s not as good as yours Dougie – yeah I did love the Greyhound and it’s welcoming staff, always had a smashing time… ;)

  174. jock dougie Says:

charlie being my favourite stone, much better than mick. good strike rate luggy. trying to make it down for the mob brixton. ive even got a brixton pound note which isnt worth much but might get a drink for for you guys.

  175. chas Says:

well i may just see you there – i bought a ticket, even though flowers in the dustbin aren’t playing. what a band they were, i understand a mint copy of their third single is worth about 10 grand now, if someone had a box of those in their attic they could probably retire on the proceeds

  176. chas Says:

well, you know, if hellcrew can become legendary via the internet anything’s possible

  177. Dev Says:

Hey Dougie! Great to hear from you mate… Robin told me you were doing OK. Glad you like the vidz. Can’t remember how we lost contact, but definitely remember playing the gig that night. If you send me a message with your address, I’ll send you a TMG CD… that goes for you too Chas – I sent you a message asking for your address ages ago! Cheers.

  179. Don B Says:

Enjoyed this Thread! Because of my fondness at the time for the Merrydown, Carlsberg and Super T my memories of all this are a little vague. Lots of familiar names and places here though. Id spent approx 17-18 years getting used to being named Donald when Fi Fallover christened me ‘The Oik’ I hated it, being the cultured and well mannered individual that I was and still am, however it stuck for a few years.
If anyone still reading and they remember can you let me know the name of the squatted venue in Stokey where you had to go down the trap door to see the bands?
PS: Only claim to fame here is that I was the only arrest, by I believe the tactical support cops when they tried a mass eviction on the Stamford Hill Estate. Oh those heady days, I was only trying to get to the chippy!
Love to all those who made it. RIP to those who didnt.
    Don.

Hello Peeples…yes tis me…the man that made that phone call to the metal show and yes the name stuck…it was off the tongue and from the hip…I just needed a collective description on the spot…no real members in mind…just us (Me, Palmer, Olly, Nic and Al I think!!) at the time (in 267 Victoria Park Road)….there is much much more info on Hackney squatting and the 281 Hackney Hell Crew Krew and all this can be read on my squatting page at my website…just type in…punk up close and personal……into google and its the fourth page or so down…the one at weebly dot com…hope you like the memories…both good and bad…I am still updating it from memory…happy reading old punkie-wunkie peeples.

  181. Tony Puppy Says:

Anthony thanks for the link to your memories – but by the time I’ve typed all that into my search engine are you the real deal?

Fourth flight up but right now it feels like underground? I’m channelling Lloyd Cole

  182. Anthony Says:

Hello Mister Puppy….I have a website link but your filters blocked me and put me in the junk…so I thought I´d go the long way around to get my ´time´ out there to people who maybe would like to read it all from a ‘part’ of it actually there (way back then)…all I have done is (“Jennifer she said lets”) put it writing (form) for your passing traffic searching for yesteryear…Cheers

  185. John Bryson Says:

Brilliant to see that old photo of the Hell Crew which brought back a lot of memories. Also nice to read the comments and conversations between folk I remember from those days. My fondest memory of the time was when Caz and I (both still in Antisect at that time I think), joined Pus, Martin (Brad Caddis), Alien and others to see the Butthole Surfers at the Ambulance Station, and ended up sleeping over. Nice drunken night and hilarious morning blagging food in a cafe on the Old Kent Road. I remember Martin wearing a full lenghth leopard print coat flying in the wind behind him as he walked down the street. I bumped into Martin in Hastings last year with Karen (? apologies if I have Karen’s name wrong I’m terrible with names), and it was great to see them both. Martin said he recognised me from my walk!?! I also remember Alien ended up attending a training session I was running for people wanting to start their own business in Tottenham about 10 years or more ago. Wonder if he ever went into business? Sad to hear that so many unique individuals are no longer with us, may they rest in peace, but nice and reassuring to see that Monty and Ollie are also still alive and kicking. Antisect have reformed of course, though I am no longer in the line up. All the very best to you all. John

  186. Nosh Says:

Pus ‘Goatsbreath’ got stabbed after jumping out a window in Bristol during a drug deal that went horribly wrong back in the late 1980′s.

to update and prevent any “nonsense tales” about pus…out of the 5 blokes who stabbed pus 3 of em od`d within 3-4 yrs after pus`s death…the other 2 were killed in seperate incidents by “person or persons unknown”…it’s true i was questioned in relation to these deaths as were a few other people but lack of evidence AKA none has led to nuffink tho none of us has officially been 100% cleared of any involvment…its also been at least 10 yrs since a copper last talked to me bout it…all info i’ve just said is fact nuffink more, nuffink less…if u hear otherwise then your bein lied to…

    ————————-
    BULLSHIT

The `FACTUAL` series of events that led to the death of Pus

He turned up at the squat at about 2am – the guy(s) who were due to turn up with the drugs

    NEVER ARRIVED

at half 8 in the morning – there were loadsa folks there waiting – Pus went off to the local supermarket n bought 6 cans of Brew and a half bottle of cheap vodka

When he went back to the house – he fell out with everyone there cos he wouldn’t share

He drank the lot n fell asleep

when the pubs opened – everyone left n went to the pub as thats where it was they was gonna score

he was left behind – sleeping

two guys in the pub that had been at the house – had left stuff behind

they were asking for the key to the gaff

The kid whose house it was – Scots John (Borthwick) from Aberdeen – wouldn’t give the key

`Theres a guy in there asleep` – just `knock` on the door & he`ll let you in – they was told

they went to the house – Bang Bang Bang

& they got frustrated cos he wouldn’t wake up

they started shouting shit through the letterbox at him…..

then he woke up – n started shouting back

    FUCK OFF – FUCK OFF

they got proper fucked off – started yellin they was gonna kick the shit out of him

he picked up a hoover – & n he threw it through the front door glass – `AT THEM` – then they got in

    they kicked n punched him

    & `one` of them `stabbed him` `ONCE`

the blade went in 12mm Deep & was 6mm wide

it was a stupid tiny little lock knife

they then dragged him (ankle each) down the (6) outside concrete steps – and they dragged him about 80m down the road & flung him in the back of a semi derelict van that a local prostitute `lived in`

local do-gooders phoned the pigs – n when they turned up – they went to the back of the van to talk to him

He told them to FUCK OFF

    So they did

it was about 3 hours later at about 7pm

the tom turned up – and started shouting

WooOOooo ! Get this dirty crusty punk out me van

He`s bleeding all over me bed

Scots John was there – they had all come back to the house by then

Couple of folks got him out the van – he `staggered` about 7 meters & collapsed to the floor

Everyone who was anyone – knew what had happened – that’s why they all stayed in the pub on CCTV for as long as they did

Scots John – was alright – he never did fuck all bad to anyone

it was he who went to Pus`s aid – noticed his lips n ears were turning Blue

and `HE` rang for an ambulance

the 12mm stab wound had `pierced` the bag that the heart lives in

for just over 4 hours – this bag filled with blood – slowing his heart beat

`Hello Bristol n Avon Ambulance Service – How can we Help`

Hello – ther’es a kid in the street that needs serious urgent help – l think he`s dying – you gotta come quick

    `What makes you think he`s dying ?` – is he breathing ?

    He`s been sta….. – l DON’T KNOW – all I know is that he needs URGENT Help – QUICK

Ambulance arrived and took Pus to hospital

Scots John was arrested shortly after – due to his `self admission` of KNOWING Pus had sustained a stab wound

Pigs `KNEW` he never done it – but they charged him with MURDER

Scots John spent the next 11 months in HMP Horfield

`I was his cell partner for 5 months`

I read EVERY STATEMENT all 4,000 pages of them !

including the pictures of him in the morgue

When Pus got to the hospital – the trauma team nurses

REFUSED to treat him – this is straight up

he was `Filthy` hadn’t had a bath in 3 years – was covered in lice

& those of you who knew him – KNOW this

was an Australian Doctor who treated him – he died in hospital

his heart stopped – they injected some shit into him to get his blood pumping – but it didn’t work – cos the bag surrounding his heart was full of blood – was a lost cause

    that’s what caused his death

because the stab wound was so small and because he was so filthy – it weren’t `obvious` to the Doc that he`d been stabbed – looked like a small `scratch`

his cause of death was FIRST discovered during his `autopsy`

I KNEW Pus – I was a Wood Green Crusty for years and all – gigs at the Ballet School – & Kardboard Box – Hackney Hell Crew

Scottish Allan – Donald – Glasgow Mark – Craig the young Glaswegian – Tania

Trigger was Pus`s girlfriend if you remember – She and him had a big fall out

He held a knife to her throat and told her if she ever went off with anyone else – he`d cut her face up

This was two to three weeks before we went to the Slayer Gig at Hammersmith Odeon – which would have made it March April 1987

It was shortly after this that Pus went to Bristol

    The man `lived` & `Died` `BY THE SWORD`

You might not like to hear that – but its FACT

Scots John KNEW who did the deed – Pigs KNEW it

so as did a lot of people

`but he never turned anyone in`

and neither did any of them !

    but that’s not `strictly` TRUE

Pigs DID find out – they went after – & got their man

    `FOR SOMETHING ELSE`

The case was `CLOSED` & was best to be forgotten…..

    Due to the FACT

Fingers were pointed at the Police `handling` of when they

spoke to Pus whilst he `LAY DYING` in the back of that van

& there was ALSO Fingers pointing at the

    MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE at the hospital

which FUCKED OVER any real chance of anyone being

    convicted of his MURDER ????????

That’s why the case got buried

The Day BEFORE Scots John`s Trial

His Lawyers produced ANOTHER 102 witness statements who all said – John WAS in the pub at the time of the stabbing

……just thought l`d clear that up

So which HHC member tattooed Goat Breaths forehead then? I saw the wee fella at the time and the reaction around Hackney was visceral.
