Part 1 – Autonomy Centre, Wapping, London, E1 – 03/01/82

Graveyard Song / Tomb / Death Is In The Eye Of The Beholder / Black Mass / Pictures Of Pain / Ghost / Incest / Claws / The Corpse / Possessed

Salem

The ghouls from Milton Keynes, playing at the Wapping Autonomy Centre alongside Rudimentary Peni and What Is Oil? and other bands.

Indebted to Chris Low for the cassette, which is a very good quality ‘crowd’ recording. Part 1 were linked to Rudimentary Peni, and indeed the two bands played together on a few occasions. Both bands were interested in the macabre and were also quite near to each other geographically. Both bands would become far more popular several years later, guess they were ahead of their time! The Part 1 E.P. is uploaded onto this site somewhere and is well worth searching out.

Saw Mark for the first time in 20 years last year. Came round to where I work to do some repairs, couldn’t work out who he was at first without his ‘onion’ haircut. There were a few of those haircuts in those days including Fod and Rob Vex who inspired the dire Turdburglars song of the same name. Mark was good mates with Scarecrow and had the best ‘onion’. Got a photo of them in Bayston Road here:

It was the rear of a ‘homemade’ card by Part 1, stuck into my copy of the 7″ single. The other side hade writing on by Mark. Don’t know where the actual picture originated from though.

Does anyone have a copy of a very strange cassette members of Part1 did called “Onker The Dwarf” ? I’ve still got the cover (will scan it for you micky along with the zine covers) but fuck knows what happened to the tape. Seem to recall it being a bit like the Magits single (another thing well worth posting up here if anyone still has one?)

pps Part 1 were one of my fave bands at that time, but one the best groups to play in Wapping was the DIY group WHAT IS OIL? who made an EP , the best track on it was Human Suffering. Sadly, the singer (and a close friend of mine from that period) Duncan Jack (AKA Duncan Dung) who is sadly no longer with us….does anybody have live recordings of What is Oil?

The Part1 tape never had a cover. Just a tracklisting which I gave to Penguin. The photo he has used above looks like one of those creepy Victorian ‘automata’ or porcelain dolls, and reminds me of one that I’m sure was on a Nurse With Wound sleeve (the LP with the Jacques Berrocal cover on it)

Martin mate, like it says above, not sure where the pic came from, but it was the rear side of a card stuck in the 7″. Front of the card had a message written on from Mark from the band.

I remember these guys, doubt they’ll remember me though! Used to live in West Bletchley where I think they came from (not at the time they did though). There’s still a bit of original graffiti on a bridge with their name on it!

Excellent band, excellent blog and my KYPP badge has survived, but not the ‘zines!

Re request for live What Is Oil? material – i’ve just found a tape in a box of the gig they did at the Spread Eagle in Southend on Sea, December 1981, when they supported The Apostles, Cold War plus various local Southend bands. No idea of the quality – may have broken down over the years, but if anyone is interested i can send it to Penguin for uploading on this site? (unfortunately I don’t have the technology myself for digitising old cassettes at the moment).

    Graham,

I’d be interested in that tape. Am very interested in Part 1 and S-Haters, the other “dark” post-punky type band that Rudi Peni actually had on their Outer Himalayan label.

Am also trying to get in touch maybe with members of Part 1, esp. Mark Farrelly??

My interview with the S-Haters on Blinko’s label is here:

I can be emailed at kvltpunk ATTTT gmail dotttttt commmmmmm

    cheers!

human suffering? That brings back memories..
    “Human suffering from diptheria
    Human suffering from feeling inferior
    Human suffering from Pol Pot
    Human suffering quite a lot”

Though almost as much a classic as

“Rob Vex Rob Vex he is my friend, Rob Vex Rob Vex comes from Gravesend Rob Vex Rob Vex he wants a gun Rob Vex Rob Vex is an onion onion”

Now the only question remains is why do I still remember that?

Rumour had it Mark F got done by the Post Office for mailing obscene material.

It was meant to be a drawing of his showing Jesus on the cross being either attacked or sucked off by a giant centipede thing.

Anyone know what sort of flange or pedals Mark used to get the guitar sound he had? Also sure wish someone dug up these tapes and reissued them, one of my favorites since I was a wee lad back in the 90’s (haha).

    Now…now…’Sunshine’…

I’m afeared can only go as far as to say it was, and is, rather a large beauty of a black box with knobs on one end, holes at other and, drew keenly at source, the suck of two nine volt batteries…of course, there be the interplay of mine own fingers at some point, but these are the ‘hen’s teeth’…claro hombre?

I’m sorry if not being too helpful here. But I bless yew for the enquiry though!

Ha Ha.I’ll go with a solid state amp and maxon ad 9. Maybe a fuzz box. I do hope this stuff does get reissued as I touted around boxes of Part 1 LPs through the years (picked up for 2 or 3 a pop from vacuum distro when they went under in 98) and gave them out to people I figured would “get it”. They did and now I have none and they are a bit pricey on Ebay for those who want it.

Cool you saw and replied though, Mike

Does anybody have lyrics to any Part 1 material? I would really want to know what they are saying. I recently got the “Pictures of Pain” LP but it had no lyrics sheet
