Brigandage live at the Bull And Gate, 1986

Richard Kick has just put up some new clips on his youtube channel, rcabutx.

This is the first of the six parts of Brigandage live at the Bull And Gate, 1986. Enjoy.

Warning – there’s a lot of smoking going on in this clip.

It was a glorious world in which we lived. A cigarette in every hand and lung cancer and heart disease mere problems for those who expected to live past thirty…

Forget about learning an instrument, it was how you smoked on stage that really counted. I’d been practicing since schooldays for this moment (I’m the ciggie puffing bass player)…

Is it classed as “passive smoking ” by merely watching this ?

Richard, what was the name of the long haired guitarist from this incarnation of Brigandage? He was the guy who played on the Pretty Funny Thing LP, yes?

The long hair is called Glen I think.

At the risk of being a complete numpty, is there anyway this can be put together and downloaded as a music file rather than DVD ???

That sounds familiar Tony. He had a nice sound, but completely different to previous Brigandage guitarists.

Michelle still sells her shirts and ting – check for Brigandage or Sexy Hooligans on ebay.

Hi Dan, yes the Timebox gig / Pretty Funny Thing LP guitarist was Glen. Less Steve Jones-esque than other Brigandage guitarists – we were heading more into VU territory by then, I suppose.

Anyone who wants the LP can find it free and easy here: http://www.mediafire.com/?dy0c99yzvld

Yea Richard, more Lou than Iggy I guess. Pretty Funny Thing was like a different band altogether – new material, different players. Odd but powerful testament as the only real piece of Brigandage vinyl. I have it and still play it. I have a great tape Michelle made me years ago of Brigandage Mk1 – gigs, demos, wicked stuff. I keep finding it and losing it again at the moment – it is defying my digitisation.

I will post it when I can Penguin.

And the John Peel session from 1983, the best thing the band ever recorded in my opinion.

My memory of the briefing I had, for the Pretty Funny Thing tracks was, to not use any guitar parts that could be mistaken for previous Brigandage guitarists, which ruled out quite a lot of the ways I would have played them more naturally at the time, having been a fan of Micks live playing in particular

Soundwise, to not use any effects like chorus and echos, which might take things in a more Banshees direction.

For direction to basically re-write all the guitar parts, in a more Velvet Underground style, with a bit of Stooges and T-Rex thrown in.

Only after I agreed did Richard tell me the recordings studio was booked for only 3 weeks later. But hey, if you dont work and don’t sleep that’s equivalent to any one else’s 2 months. Sleep deprivation and strong alcohol/coffee mixtures being key ingredients in getting an honest Lou Reed feel ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi Glen, thanks for that bit of information.

Another piece of the Brigandage jigsaw clicks into place.

Hope you are keeping well. Are you playing music in any band at the moment?

Sent a message to Michelle via MySpace before Xmas. Said she was planning on working on a Brigandage retrospective CD. Good news to these ears.

Remember the Peel session very well. Great to hear these tracks again.
Have to say that amongst that crop of bands – SGC, Southern Death Cult, Blood and Roses et al, Brigandage were always my favourites.

    @ Michelle
The only people I remember having a a good quality copy of the Peel sessions were Protag ( AltenativeTV/Blyth Power) and someone from the KOB in Berlin, bet you didn’t think I could remember anything from Berlin Becks und Zeck und wrecked ๐Ÿ˜‰ though maybe it was Trevor from Ich Und Mine Staubsukker (sp?) who had the decent copy.

Did you manage to track Dez down?

    @Tony
I’ve grown my hair a bit since those days ;P
I did try to get a few friends to do a concept based on of an extremist US Christian right wing propoganda tape you sent me from India/Pakistain,
” hey there’s Grandpa and Granma… and they look so young, and they’ve got a big house and a big car and they’re drinking Coca Cola… This is heaven.. What wondeful place to be …”
but somehow no-one else seemed interested, OK so maybe a concept album from the point of view of a dead child wasn’t such a great idea.

    So I gave up playing…almost…
I did do a thing with Clive Goodwin ( Webcore ) Paul Mcwhinney ( Treatment/The Answer ) Jonnie Ely ( Thunderdogs ) called The Siddhe ( though I spelt it Psydhe ) Which came about as Clive and I were doing a lot of live sound engeneering together and I’d agreed to play a bit for one of his bands, ended up being more intergral than initailly planned, we didn’t get much done as we spent more time enginerering for others rather than ourselves eg Linking back to Brigandage, I did the sound at quite a few early Daisy Chainsaw gigs, about 6 different bands that Dez played in and rather nicely a few for Blyth Power when Protag played for them, nice as he did sound for Brigandage a few times. Oh and Richard’s Woman project.

    @ Bob & Richard
The days when 2000 Players No. 6 were cheaper than hiring a smoke machine and Iron Lung was the code name of a cold war porn star spy

    @Dan i
I’d certainly like to hear it, I was always a Brigandage fan, in fact I reckon that I’m the Brigandage member that paid to go and see them more times than any other Brigandage member. A record that will probably stand unless Michelle reforms with Jon Slam/AngryPerson/NowMildPersonByAllAcccounts

This piece may be of interest RE early 80s Camden Town, Brigandage, brigandage, the violent vagaries of human nature and so on. Link: http://www.3ammagazine.com/3am/boiling-a-kettle-coldly/

That’s a great piece Richard! Good to see more of those photos from that session. I remember some of them from the interview in ZigZag around 1985 that I still have in my loft and from BRIGANDAGE gig flyers that are still tucked inside my copy of ‘Pretty Funny Thing’.
